  1. I'm not sure they would want to be "true soulies" Survey is and odd word for casual conversation, but I would hazard a guess that they might expect to see people wearing similar clothes to those they would wear to the pub??
  2. Spoken like a true norman! Is this thread about the northern scene or a music scene which includes soul such as the genre we call northern? My student son runs a night where they play funk, "quality" hip-hop, (and I don't profess to know what constitutes that), soul and even some 60's R&B, and apparently these nights are well received.
  3. Strange! I've spoken to a number of people who have a liking for the music, but find the 70's fashions naff and have mentioned that as a factor that puts them off attending. However, as you say "it has no significant bearing", I must have got mixed up somewhere along the line.
  4. Too right, it is! It's certainly holding back potential new blood! That younger crowd go to smart venues which are not populated by fancy-dress clothed people, bathed in unhealthy nostalgia about places that no longer exist. They don't have to listen to jaundiced opinions on what should and should not be played; they don't have to hear about "etiquette" nor get scowled at for not observing it ; they just go and enjoy the music! Bit of a contrast to the northern scene over here, eh?
  5. ah... gotcha! Baz's territory really
  6. It seems to me a little unfair to single out one person for public trial on this issue. There are plenty of people every weekend who play from boots/aceates/Vinyl Carvers "creations". I've heard, amongst others, Margaret Little, Mello Souls, Admirations played from formats other than OG vinyl by members of this board. Perhaps it depends who you are as to whether it is ok? Spot on Shane! You beat me to it by minutes
  7. I think "Lover" by Sherrie Taylor and Singing Sammie Ward dates from 59 or 60?
  8. No... it's not a good enough record!
  9. Psst! Oi gav'nor.... can you get me some black market ciggies?
  10. Not sure I understand that. Do you mean the scene is just about expensive records? There's plenty of amazing £50 records to be heard as well.
  11. No! Don't upset the holy sister, Bazza... or divine retribution will be visited upon you! I'm all for a bit of funk! Played some at a mainly 60s night the other week... and I've nearly got the fruit stains out of my clothes!
  12. Defo not, where I saw you the other week. It's compulsory there! Mind you... Pat and the F***in Blenders is compulsory everywhere!
  13. No mate, I wasn't there... though I have been to GH in the past. Was just on the wind-up really Re the different tunes.... as you drift further East i.e. towards Cleggy, you tend to find more acceptance of "modern" tunes, as has always been the case. Is that what you meant?
  14. What... and Arin Demain, Ronnie McNeir and Bernie Williams aren't? Or do you mean the other guy's set aren't big enough money?
  15. Blimey! How did you get past the border guards?
  16. No you can't! Perish the thought! Haven't got a ticket I'm afraid, but no doubt bump into you somewhere before long.
  17. Brian, surely that should be in the wants section? You'll be hearing from Shane if you're not careful! Alternatively we could have a new section for whippets, terriers and ferrets... the WTF? forum.
  18. The history taught in schools is an important subject for youngsters and of interest to them. The unhealthy nostalgia that pervades the northern scene is neither important nor interesting to the young people Paul says the show is aimed at.
  19. Spot on Paul! Write to the radio station and tell them mate! There should be a trap door beneath the presenters chair which opens into a mineshaft at the mention of any of the following words: Wigan, 1973, old money, Casino, baggies, Torch, whippets, badges, mild, talcum powder, back in the day, pigeons, moustache etc. Add to the list as you see fit. Hope you are well, btw.
  20. Haven't you had enough already? Surely you can't be that two-faced when sober? You insult the company by saying they are shallow for mentioning the Katrina disaster, thus getting into an argument in which you are clearly out of your depth, then make out you are hard done-to!
  21. --> QUOTE(mark.b @ Sep 8 2006, 07:44 PM) link i personaly think this is a poor post as you have not read every post on here and there are a lot of us who dont just like northern soul, i feel insulted by your assumptions. if you bothered to check all the forums you would find a lot of us are open minded to the music we love, of course there are some who are a closed book to anything other than northern, but there are people like this in every walk of life. mark This IS a joke, right?
  22. Try Carole Jones, Problem Child.
  23. Nick, you young fogey! When you're out and you hear a great record for the first time, how do you know it's not pitched up... and better for it?
