thirst for more, no class djs and other stuff etc
I only collect OV, but tend to think "each to their own" mostly. It does piss me off a bit when I hear the likes of Mello Souls or Margaret Little played off boots/CD though. One of the key things about the scene to me has always been brilliant rare records and if you can hear them off boots at every night you go to, they ain't rare any more.

Is Pitching Up Ok Or The Work Of The Devil
Never thought of it as "tricking" an audience... would you say the same about cover-ups? As for telling the audience, some folks would be making that announcement after every record.

So it's not actually impossible then? More of a way of hearing rare material for those who can't be bothered to travel? What do you think of the DJ's who do play the "played out stuff" ... from pressings? And what does "locally" mean? Every event is local to somebody.

If you like what you hear, surely that justifies it being pitched up?

Why is it impossible?

So What Makes A Good Dj
I'm keeping away from that topic Steve, for fear of being struck down by Earnshaw the NS god.

So What Makes A Good Dj
Can't help wondering what's prompted this... is it a veiled swipe at a neighbouring DJ/Promoter like the "Proper Soulies" thread?

I didn't put myself across very well. I meant that what it said on the flyer is not relevant to this guy. I can however see the relevance, and irony, of the point about him playing CDs after having a pop at previous DJs.

Right, now we know which event we are talking about, the bit about one resident playing off CDs applies to Barry, i.e. the resident.... and fair enough! Doesn't really have any relevance to this issue though.

If that's "better", why didn't you keep quiet then? Couldn't reply to your first post because it's all within the quote, but if the guy said that, and then played off CD's, (why was that, if he is the innovator you suggest????), Baz's terminology seem's quite reasonable to me. It's nowt to do with oldies vs. the terrible unknown... it's about showing some manners whilst behind the decks, presumably whilst getting paid.

Proper Soulies
Unusual for you, I know... but you're missing the target a bit there The music I enjoy the most is R&B, so the standard Rock & Roll comments would be more pertinent.

Proper Soulies
God is not pleased with thee! Thou must seek forgiveness! Travel to the bleak desert where the Temple of Wigan once stood and for 40 days and 40 nights thou shalt chant the chorus of Right Track! (And do that strange fast clapping bit as well!)

The Best Clapping Tunes
Wombat. Getting On Life. I think Pete posted a file of this a while back.

Played Out Oldies
I didn't mean on SS particularly.... I meant the constant nostalgic references at events. No, there isn't an event that doesn't play tunes thst were broken at Wigan... but do we need to be constantly reminded? How many times do you hear DJ's say "Wigan biggie/stomper/oldie" etc, even when the record was first played at Cleggy? Let folks judge a record on its merits.

Played Out Oldies
Good post... a sanitised version of what JT said P & Blenders has been overplayed in the last few years, whereas the second batch you mention became overplayed yonks ago... thats the difference.

Played Out Oldies
Win, I agree...the respect for having gone there is of no relevance to me either, but there are some who don't seem to know it is 2006. I think what hacks off some younger people is that there are so many on the scene who want to relate as many records/events as possible to Wigan, be they DJ's or raconteurs! I reckon the disrespect is aimed at those people rather than the venue. When you go to watch Spurs you don't spend the whole match talking about Dave MacKay and Jimmy Greaves, do you?

Played Out Oldies
Don't you think you are getting things a bit out of proportion there Win? I didn't see the "pis*ing" comment and I would imagine it was an attempt at humour, but why should anybody demand respect just because they spent their youthful weekends off their tits dancing in a northern club? I think many would gain more respest if they moved on! As you said earlier.. it ain't the holy grail

Played Out Oldies
I know what is small minded too, It's having the serious belief that this actualy happens !! This post has been edited by Bogue: Today, 05:32 PM If you really don't believe it happens, try visiting a few soul nights in the East Midlands

Played Out Oldies
Very good Rus! Be even funnier if if one of your co-promoters wasn't inclined to play the odd vinyl-carvers piece himself!
-
Played Out Oldies
Is this another that's big with all E midlands soulies.... or just the arse bandits amongst them??
-
Played Out Oldies
Was that me? If not, can I just say that IMHO, that is the the most overplayed, dreary piece of background music ever played on the scene?

The Soul 'n' Scooterists Divide ?
This must be open to regional variations. At my nearest large soul night Frank Wilson, Ruby Andrews, Nolan Porter, Carla Thomas etc... (you get the general idea?)... have to be played or the locals believe a live sacrifice to the northern gods must be made instead! However, I have played to the scooter club in the same city and found they'll happily accept underplayed soul from any era, funk, R&B, ska etc. Much more interesting. They are very keen on The Kinks though

Will Things Be Better When We Die
And I thought the original post was comparing the intransigent scene here with the european acceptance of "the whole of soul", and not very favourably. I have spoken to a number of people about it, so what they've said is significant to me... glad to find you weren't being sarcastic btw. Hope you don't mind me saying, I find your choice of clothes for a trip to the pub a little surprising... afraid I've only ever worn a football shirt when plaing football.

Will Things Be Better When We Die
Oh, I'm welling up now! I need to find one of those black fist motifs to post!

Will Things Be Better When We Die
Yes, I'm afraid that is what I meant by the misnomer fashion And I know what you mean.... and me too.
