  1. Not sure why you've quoted my post, but I only visited your site to check out Mike's link. Is it above comment then.. even though there's an article on a discussion that took place on here? Four Vandals, Martin? A wind-up, surely?
  2. --> QUOTE(Mike B @ May 3 2007, 07:58 PM) link Most of the events now that try to be a little progressive/different do not use the word "northern" in their description. Personally I wouldn't have thought the term excluded a bit of rare or modern, but if it says so on that site, it must be the case. I notice in another article there, the writer talks about meeting "coloured" people at all-nighters. I wonder what colour they were.. blue perhaps? Hi Dave - I do see quite a few red people at events - like me they are normally the wrong side of 35 and despite being out of condition insist on spending hours on the dancefloor when they should know better Hi Mike At Lifeline last week there were one or two who looked slightly green, but thats a different story!
  3. --> QUOTE(Mike B @ May 3 2007, 07:18 PM) link I recently came across another UK based Northern Soul site on the internet, well actually it says it is the UK's number one Northern Soul website and no its nothing to do with KRL ...... Anyway click HERE and have a read of the article titled getting it right.... Just wondered what others think as to the concept of only using the term Northern Soul for oldies nights? If you have an across the board policy of mixing in newer sounds are you committing a trading standards offence As the Sun would say - are you the promoter who claimed it was the punters fault or do you know who they are? Feel free to voice your (non libelous) comments Most of the events now that try to be a little progressive/different do not use the word "northern" in their description. 4. He wasn't available "Luther". Have PM'd the exchange to you.. perhaps you will convey my last reply to him?
  5. Really? Nothing to do with his paranoia about the "conspiracy" against him then? And why is he now "validating" as oooo? Perhaps that should be ooh-ooh-uh-uh? Yeah, pm the number.
  6. Looks like the monkeys have stopped throwing shit and are grooming eachother now My PM box aint quite so fluffy though. I can't seem to reply to jemco/ooo/D.Head. Anbody got his email?
  7. My understanding of "the point" is this: Attendances are falling and the fall is accelerating. This is accentuated by the new events which have started in the last couple of years for no better reason than everybody wants to promote/DJ, thus spreading the decreasing number of punters ever more thinly. The only way to halt this decline so that there are still a few venues to attend in 5-10 years time is to attract "new blood". If mainstream publicity does this, all well and good. The only obstacles to overcome then are the silly elitism, obsession with etiquette etc, and general intolerance bordering on hostility that many display to anybody who has not served the apprenticeship. People like the Wheel veteran Steve described are a major deterrent, and unfortunately all too familiar.
  8. WHO.. is missing the point? Seems to me Steve was bang on the point.
  9. Seems that you and this fella Jem are more monkeys throwing shit, like the ones in the Peterborough zoo. Only difference is... it's not clear who you're throwing the shit at!
  10. 90% of it is!!!! Spot on Pete, (for once ) Voted good. The 100 club ain't the only venue on the scene!
  11. I thought you were, but as far as "novel" rare records are concerned, which is what I think this thread was originally about, it's a bit different to "who gets to play the oldie first".
  12. Yes, but that's not the point, is it? Unless you are saying that x,y,z are records that you have discovered!
  13. There are no written rules but it's all a matter of good manners really. If a DJ discovered, or is associated with, a particular record, you ask if he intends to play it before you decide to. Not sure this applies to Johnny Howard though, (far more energetic version than the Artistics BTW), because as Pete said it was played in the seventies, and there must be plenty of copies about. There's no excuse though for removing someone else's record from the decks or any other "militant action". From what I've seen recently, some of those who are the most sensitive about being able to play "their" records have no such respect for records first played by others. As for the guys playing Mello Souls, Primers, Margaret Little boots/dubs, the promoters know what's going on and they are as much to blame as the DJ's IMHO.
  14. I would say the majority of people in their 30's and 40's have little or no interest in vinyl, so that's not exclusive to 15yo's. The big difference is that my lad buys/borrows my, vinyl purely according to his taste for a record, detached from any scene or preoccupation with rarity etc, and that principle does not bode well for the rare, high priced records.
  15. What's that mean in English? My son and his mates put on nights of soul, funk, hip-hop, house etc and they play from vinyl only.. it certainly means something to them.
  16. And how long do you think that will go on for Dave? Given the advancing of most collectors?
  17. Looks like he was getting a bit more "helmet" than he'd bargained for!
  18. You're right about Chris Clarke, Mik. Typical, simple Motown style up-tempo dancer, nowt much wrong with it, but it's caught on with the once-a-month-local-night crowd and thus has been played to death in some places. And yes 5 Royales is a great doo-wop record. Pity so many people saw it get a response and decided they needed one to play!
  19. Quite right Mikey The excitement of travelling to hear these sort of tunes is what it's all about. If you could hear them anytime, they'd soon lose their allure.. like most soul nights.
  20. I'm baffled by all this! I want to be able to go out every Friday night, travelling no more than 15 miles, drink too much and wobble about to great records that I know, like Ruby Andrews and Carla Thomas. Surely nobody would remove them from their hotbox? Am I missing the point?
  21. Shalln't be online again until next week, so if anyone should want this ring me on 07957 736797.
  22. Got one spare wristband for the weekender. Anyone interested in buying it, PM me
  23. Nonsense! If a tune's played and we like it.. it's northern. If we don't like it.. it's funk or R&B. Simple as that.
  24. Yes, I have heard Joan, Paul abd Karl play and I agree they have good taste. My comment was a little clumsy and was a reaction to the tendency on here, in general, for too many threads to be turned into "plugs". Have edited previous post
