  1. Paul, I'll pm you Rob Thomas's number.
  2. Egoes? How ironic is that from someone who has in his signature the suggestion that he is the best "oldies DJ in the land"?
  3. No need to shout mate! Setting aside the legal rights to the music, priming the other DJ was obviously a wind-up tactic, and it strikes me as a bit lacking in respect/manners to Mick, the promoter as well. Maybe Rob's lost the plot a bit.. at the Cleggy dayer he was bragging to anyone who'd listen about how he'd kept the floor clear for an hour. I know he reads SS, so we might see an explanation. Doubtful though.
  4. Good thread!!! Some of the main offenders have been named, but I'll add: the other Perry - It Takes Heart, Alfie feckin Davidson. And any other limp-wristed elevator music that's the right tempo for the beer monsters to shuffle along to, whilst proclaiming they like moddunn.
  5. What, you mean cute like flying ducks on the wall?
  6. Good job you told us that means Stax, because I wouldn't have known Around here these are known as PPPP's... poor people's personal plates.
  7. Now then Kev, reluctant as I am to disagree with you, JF is a soul record with a hint of funk. There were funkier records played, Willie J, Flaming Emeralds, Skull Snaps for example, and equally acceptable in my view, then and today. When this kind of thing was played at Cleethorpes we just took it as being under the broad umbrella of northern along with the 60s stuff, and left the punters in the north west to argue about it. JF gets played enough today, too much in some places, and I would like to hear more of the less fashionable 70s oldies played, perhaps instead of some of this crossover/elevator music. It was good to hear a few at the recent Cleggy all-dayer, and also Mick playing Skullsnaps at Lifeline.
  8. Mine plays 'Hitler has only got one ball'. Perhaps that doesn't count.
  9. Hello Kev, fancy seeing you here! Yep, maybe he does. Braver? In dress sense? Sexuality? Playlists? Who knows? Sorry, can't guess mate.. you'll have to slap a bit more paint on the canvas. A'dieu
  10. Don't really get that. Several of those are not all-nighters. Just because they have a "broader music policy", does that mean they are clogged up with mid-tempo background music? Any reason for singling out those particular venues?
  11. Yes, I know what you mean Steve, and I was talking about nighters. For me, whether I'm dancing or not, there's always more of a buzz if the music has some urgency and folks are on the floor.
  12. Seems to me there's a few who don't know their craft then. I've seen one or two acclaimed DJs play an hour of lovely crossover to an empty dance-floor that they pay no attention to. On the monday you read on here what a good set it was... so why don't the admirers dance then?
  13. Joan, your first post gave the impression, perhaps wrongly, that you thought the original post should not have been made at all. Now it seems it's the manner of the criticism you object to: I agree, it's not the most diplomatically worded feedback I've ever read, but everyone has their own way of putting things. Personally, I allow a small pinch of salt for any post that's made on a Sunday, and maybe Monday, as the poster may be be suffering a little for what they imbibed on the Saturday. I think comments on here are generally put in a reasonable way... unless it's about a Winstanley event of course, because then it's open season
  14. I find this response a bit surprising. I've read posts by you in the past that have contained criticisms of events... why shouldn't this guy have his say? In view of the recent thread about "overkill", perhaps it's time we all spoke our minds about sub-standard events so that some of them get weeded out.
  15. Makes for interesting reading though
  16. This sentence is right on the money Paul. The rest of your post is flagrant self-promotion though... you'll be giving away junk-food next!
  17. Crash helmet on... it could be argued that in doing it for nowt you are helping to keep an event going that is unable to justify its existence, but is taking customers from another event.
  18. Good post mate! That's the sort of point I was trying to make, but you've done it more diplomatically.
  19. You seem to like answering posts I've directed to other people? And no, it's you that just don't get it. "Some do it for nothing because they love the music"? Maybe so, but it doesn't make them good DJs. Many do it for nothing because they are desperate to DJ.. what's that if it's not ego? Likewise, many events have started up in the last two years for the same reason, and it doesn't make them good events. I know "some venues don't generate enough on the door to pay big money out", and they either have their mates DJing for nothing or petrol money. Then reciprocate with those mates. Those events are mostly unexciting and just serve to take 30 or so people away from good events. If those collectors weren't so keen to Dj and instead supported the good events, along with their 30 punters, the scene would be more healthy, therefore they are one of the problems in doing what they are doing. Basically I'm agreeing with what Andy, James and Tony have said. Do you understand what I'm trying to say now, or do you want a diagram?
  20. This is one of the problems IMHO. Good DJ's should be paid a good rate, and if they weren't so desperate to feed their ego's they wouldn't get behind the decks without that fair rate. If you can't justify paying them accordingly, why put the event on?
  21. Good post, agree with all of it. It seems a majority on this thread think there is overkill and that clashes are a bad thing. I get the impression though that a lot of promoters and DJs think that other people's events are at fault and not their own. Those that are detemined to get behind the decks will find a way of doing it and justifying it, regardless of how it fragments the scene.
  22. "Aimed"?? I asked a question of one of the promoters.. sorry, didn't realise that was overstepping the mark! I know how good the Trent night is, and have no doubt the attic is "fantastic" too, but as for "no clashes", what is the term to describe two events on the same night within 15 miles of eachother then??
  23. I don't think one way or the other, I was asking a question. Why do you ask what I think your "opinion of the Union" is? My question was directed to Steve L and was not ironic. As for playlists, like I said I think its secondary to the main point.. and why is it relevant where I, or anybody else, was in the 70s? I didn't say Mark's post was a red herring... just the opposite. And I didn't think his post was referring to you, as indeed my agreement with it was not directed to you, or any one event, but comments on what ails the scene.
