  1. Yeah, I went a time or two in the 70s. Wasn't there a moving dancefloor or is that somewhere else? Those nostalgia-fests are not really my cuppa tbh Mandy, although if there was some funk as Dawn suggests it might be more interesting.
  2. Astonishing! Every other thread on here at the moment tells of a good venue closing or a progressive event struggling... and you lot want yet another nostalgia wallowing retro-fest!
  3. Steve, you've summarised the answer to this thread, and others like "too many chiefs.." in one post. On another thread, Ian D theorised about starting a regular, central nighter with the most progressive DJs as residents. Sounds a great idea, but it wouldn't work for the reasons you've given: mainly there wouldn't be enough interested because 90% of the scene only want a nostalgia based over 40s disco!
  4. Chris and Marcelle, I'm sorry to read your post. Credit to you both for what you've achieved in the last few years... your events have taken the scene to a new level! The nights at CIS and Queens Hall were amongst the best I've had anywhere. Hopefully in time the small-minded idiots who have hassled you recently will realise just how good your events were and the selfless effort you put into then. Hope to see you both out and about soon... enjoy your nights on the dancefloor.
  5. Yes, actually I can name a couple of nights where the promoter doesn't DJ, (not out and out northern though), and those two events have a good deal more integrity than some I can think of!
  6. I remember the anticipation for that event Chalky.. somebody ought to resurrect it!
  7. Is it true you don't play anything but 70's?
  8. Oh please... stop encouraging him!
  9. Quite an exciting, well produced record that deserves playing IMHO... maybe not three times a night though. Not completely my cup of Earl Grey, because as Ady said it is more early 70s in style than 60s, and not in the same league as Joseph Webster. Harry, musically the scene is on its arse! For every forward looking event like Lifeline, 100 club, Burnley, DKOF etc that attract up to a couple of hundred lovers of the music, there are 25 oldies/"ATB" events EVERY weekend which each attract 100 lovers of nostalgia. And heaven forbid anyone should play a bit of R&B! On a recent "Lookbacks" thread, some goon was lamenting the fact that The Champion and Afternoon of the Rhino were not played instead of "southern soul", which meant the sort of records you tend to hear at the aforesaid nighters. Good post from the pulpit there! Which Sharon Jones record do you mean? I haven't had the nerve yet to play 100 Days, 100 Nights out. Did you mean out-weighs? Interesting post that, because a few of us long term punters on the scene, a lower species than you serious collectors, I know, would not agree with your view.
  10. Just as a matter of interest, the original question was "can the northern scene be attractive to youngsters", NOT "can soul source be...". The two things are not the same. I get the impression some of the young contributors get to more events than a few of the "keyboard dancers" who write on here.
  11. You sad act! Step away from the screen. In fact, turn the P C off. Go to your door, open it and step outside. Now... wouldn't you sooner go out to a place where they play this music for people to dance to?
  12. Requests - plural? Really? On here, or in your mind?
  13. Mark we don't often disagree but I think we do on this one. Hospitable to newcomers? How often do you see "soulies" scowling and growling at folk dancing with a bottle in their hand, rather than offering a quiet word of advice? How often do you hear comments about any style of dancing that appears different to the "norm"? How much sour grapes and bullshit about "time served" do you hear about any younger DJ who tries to stamp his own style on the set he plays? Hospitable? Amongst ourselves, yes.. but less so to newcomers unfortunately! You're surely not suggesting those descriptions are inaccurate? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Paul, you know very well that I wish you all the best with your night mate. Don't take any notice of doubters on here...remember that while some of us were having a great time at Prestatyn, many were giving their analysis of the event on SS without feeling the need to leave their own keyboards. Say's a lot, I reckon!
  14. Naff indeed, which is why it's of no interest to most of us and why we pass it by. And also why I couldn't care less if some are drawn by it. None of my business really.. nor anybody else's. Real enough for you?
  15. What rubbish you talk! How is people learning to dance to northern "degrading"? And on what do you base your judgement that the scene is "cool"? If some new faces turn up to enjoy an event without impairing anyone else's enjoyment, what does it matter how they discovered it? Perhaps they should carry a "soulie CV" to show at the door, eh? Or only be admitted if they wear the approved "clothing"? Would that be baggies by any chance?
  16. Hmmm. Great minds etc Re Prestatyn, the very thing that makes it is the fact that you can go to other rooms while the oldies are aired in the main room, then return around midnight to hear the "big names", as you put it.
  17. Bazza, there's so much diversity now that it would be impossible to cover all genres equally and attract followers of each and keep them happy. Like Steve said, that's not what's killing the scene.. it's the sheer volume of "across the board" soul nights run by wannabe DJ's. In this area "ATB" seems to mean overplayed records from all eras, and mostly easy-tempo to accomodate the less agile/over fortified punter. I enjoy R&B/underplayed 60s nights, and you often see a few folks from these nights at "upfront" venues like Lifeline, but the reverse can seldom be said. How many of the thousands of "classics" fans would go to a rare or R&B night? Very few. Some of the oldies brigade like a bit of modern, yes... about a dozen records that have become well known, and you wouldn't expect to see a modern fan dancing to Ruby Andrews or Willie Michell. It's just asking too much IMO. One of the best nights I attended last year was at The Fox... R&B, oldies, rare, modern, even a bit of funky stuff... and I heard a few moans about that even though the event was free!
  18. You've hit the nail squarely on the head there Jock!! There are dozens of soul nights where the DJ's only motivation is a desperation to be behind the decks and they just see records as a means to achieve this, irrespective of quality and personal taste. I sometimes go to local nights and wonder why they bother to have four or five different DJ's on, as they all have the same records and it's just a matter of whose turn it is that night to play, say, "Because of You"! Then I remember that if the "promoter" didn't give these DJ's an hour of autopilot on the decks, he wouldn't get asked to reciprocate the following weeks when those guests have their own nights. Sad, as you rightly say! Just out of interest, somebody mentioned "Baby Love" as a record they dislike: So what? What's that got to do with northern/rare soul?
  19. You morbid bugger Kev! Bobby Williams - I've Only Got Myself to Blame.
  20. As Pete has alluded, I think there is often a bit of ambiguity in the terms used to describe a night. In the east midlands and east anglia, "across the board" seldom means underplayed. It means well known/overplayed music, albeit including records made big in the last ten years, not just "classic" oldies.
  21. Good points Bearsy! Hope you've got your flak-jacket handy.
