Words A Plenty, Actions The Opposite
Dysonsoul replied to Dave Thorley's topic in All About the SOUL
Surely it's just bad manners and rude to put on events when such hard working promotions like bidds, lowton, more recently groovesville are on the whole just scraping through and more so wilton which has limped it's way through the lean times even when the callender wasn't at bursting point ? just cos a mile radius point is applicated this makes it ok ? nah wilton certainly needs it's regulars from even further afield than gloucester or which ever other town.Put it on and hope we're supported is fine ,but if it isn't and the others aren't then we're left with nowt.. this of course applies country wide not in particular th above named event. -
Have put me thinking cap on and gonna try come up with something, taken all comments on board and working on some idea's... Re mick h - twas only tongue in cheek ...

There is a lot of truth in that ,stafford was indeed very quiet more often than packed out ,it was ground breaking for sure.but times seem different now like i've mentioned before it's an illusion this upfront thing it always has been ( certainly with a venue that holds 2-300) ! only possible with a room of 30-50 people then you gotta get them 50 people to turn out, they're notoriously unreliable and fickle ! although i've always enjoyed that kind of environment and probably spent as much time in those nites than i have niters ! Also paul , as far as finding brand new discoveries is conserned (vinyl wise ) it is very tuff ,but re the amount of records the uk punters want - there are records certain dj's have in reserve ,it's the time scale involved in breaking them ,apart from say very special instant ones like willie tee -pay some dues or say wally coco (which i know you'v been playing).i guess this explains the repetetivenes of sets. ady ,don't worry bout dj'in to the bar staff ,mick h does it nearly every time he's on... julie, apologies but this does go on cos it is relevent and will in effect influence the more mainstream clubs a year or five down the line what venues like the 100 club ,LL play aswell as even the small backroom promotions....

I agree it's healthy to debate and on the whole am on the same side as you and of course your enthusiasm is faultless, but the reality is we aren't in milan ,we're in the midlands which shouldn't matter but it does when it comes to the paying customer, this funk edged thing is all well and good but like i said before was nearly the death of lifeline the people voted with their feet... we had to get back at least to the 60's base and build from there which we have at the stables, the funk scene is no more is it ? apart from the collecting side ,did all these funk people flock to listen to our stuff at lifeline during leaner times when we did play more of it ? well no they didn't ,this don't mean we shouldn't play a bit more of it now ,but again reality time it's hard enough to introduce a northern winning unknown let alone a left field 70's/funk dancer ,again not the way it should be ! re chalky's words when he speaks he speaks for himself as it goes i know where he was coming from re the full hour of the funk edged stuff it probably would be too much for some ! from lifeline's view you're as good as your last night now if people go away feeling a little confused or unhappy then they may not come back ever... re hearing butch, myself or any of the other jocks playing the same records as last time well -it's simple ...finding another unknown to replace the ravins, henry c ,bolita woods or whatever tune it is, now there are plenty of great tunes but not plenty of great tunes that no one else has which in essence is why we go to niters right ? I wish i could wave a magic wand and everyone be into all the genres and styles on offer but it's difficult,Lifeline may not be perfect and probably not the best ,but i feel the niter scene can and will benefit from what it has to offer, certainly in the not too distant future....?

Lots of great ,entertaining reading each and every one thinks they are right .. in some ways they are.I like the whole lot of it northern oldies, modern ,funk ,upfront and r+b ( infact it's all r+b ) it all excites me from stoke kings hall to bidds ! It goes without saying go to the venues that play the style or styles you prefer ,basic freedom of choice. In all fairness the niter scene has to be healthy cos of the amount of em running (especially on the oldies side of things ) and relatively busy, this of course compared to the cutting edge nites, rooms and niters which will always find it difficult for many reasons ,it's just the nature of the beast and it's minority. Over recent months Lifeline has been at the butt of comments (all negative) which is no problem at all ,although at times cryptic and masked but ultimately aimed at myself and lifeline...in the main mr sadot points out about lifeline's music being stagnant and repetetive and refers to the old guard or old boys (which i assume are the residents at LL? ) which you are bold enough to mention but not name ? is it sam, butch mick h,me ,cliff, arthur, ady pountain, kitch any others? please enlighten us and also if it's any of those- who you'd propose to replace them with - we've had james trouble (who sealed his fate 1st time round) karl heard ( we have invited back) yourself paul on numerous occasions, amongst others adam topping, killa, nicola anderson, kev fev, tony foster, nick stevenson amongst other lovers of something different.. next niter has george m spinning (1 of the chaps you mention) I wasn't aware ian wright ,adam leaver or callum were actively dj'ing on the northern scene ? Also on a thread some time ago we asked for any folk wanting to play at lifeline to drop us a line with details ,we got 2 or 3 replies all of which appeared on the rosta.. ( closed shop eh ? another one of yours and other folks digs ) Paul mentions the lack of 70's or best of 70's ,utter crap do i really need to name current 70's /funky edged spins ? certainly worth mentioning in relation to this ,lifeline's worst period for attendances was at olde bell when most of the dj's programmed more 70's,infact not just more 70's but some of the finest ever in the shape of doc peabody, the importers on import or how about the justifications on restart ? obviously you know all these paul ? so the very way forward you're goin on about in essence nearly finnished lifeline of course with other factors... you seem to be blinkered by the way of the small back room scenario working in a main room environment well as much as i'd like that to work along with all the lifeline dj's and guests it ain't gonna work it never has and never will ,it's all an illusion and you know what they are the words of some of the dj's you say should be on at lifeline whom you mention in your posts ! we have a average of 250 in these days the punter does and on the whole write the dance floor story ,having said that cos we have a 50/50ish split of upfront and good time punters due to careful and some what longer term time scale for breaking newer discoveries - this is the way it is at best. So i'm intrigued who you will replace at least butch with ,who can find and play new records better than him ? or sam who can manipulate a dance floor like him with such natural vibe ? Which promoter declared all 70's shite and won't have funk influenced tunes paul? someone commented about the big dj's playing for free ,if not give the little guys aset then they may stop setting there on venues up. jesus christ that's rich ! Hardly worth going into paul but you mention one of the promoters at a 3 room event, too scared to venture into the small rooms ? assuming that's me ,scared my arse it's a matter of watching the front and maintaining a safe and secure environment for the public, for the record i went in all 3 rooms.. it could go on and on and on .. posted this up because i thought it was relevant to the state of at least a small part of the upfront niter scene and only because i felt my hand was dealt somewhat !

Good grief mace bet you used loads of vaseline when you sat on your hands ... was it left or right or both at the same time ! Aye been readin through it and find there's a fair bit aimed at me,so will have to at least acknowledge the points at some stage ,but you're right -most of the folk actually have a lot more in common....
-
Aye jock. agree , Alice Clark is total perfection and my all time favourite northern cut ,One wonders why there is so much fuss over the instrumentals....
-
Fabulous double sider,i sold tony ganda a copy some years ago ,kept one then came across another 2 were near on mint the other used, great soul vocals !
-
Not guilty i'm afraid, although if i'd have seen it i would have bid on it !

Maybe sam should have said first time at lifeline... ? really the lack of new discoveries in a traditional style 60's and 70's is forcing the hands of cutting edge dj's .. let's be realistic here apart from the odd few dj's none are actually coming up with anything half good enough to win purists over let alone the niter dancers , wally coco is in my opinion about as far away from the traditional style that the niter scene will accept - rightly or wrongly, having said that it got a better reaction than many of my first time plays that leave coco standing ! i've had my own copy of this some 15 years and remember playing it at wilton around that time (only did this cos played it a mate at my house and he asked me to play it for him ) infact if i remember you played it at a recent wilton i think and it sounded more fitting during your set than mine due to changing musical trends...it is really a funk record but credit to the northern scene it does maybe take on and embrace funk, modern and r+b and combine. I wouldn't get in to too much of a tizzy if sam plugs it paul ,but i know where you're coming from.

This record first came to light best part of 20 years ago it came in a pile of stuff off simon soussan to browny, nick got the record along with some other bits. Not long after it was played under the guises of chuck jackson if memory serves me right, infact somehow a recording from that copy made it's way onto a bootleg c/d in europe of poor quality and the artist on the c/d was "chuck jackson" ! i found a spare around 3-4 years ago and traded it off.It certainly has the feel good factor when played out loud and with plays i dare say could be a popular tune.A tuff 45 even with ebay publicity - had it not been for the bay it would have been near on impossible to find......
-
i'll go crazy along with the rayons -decca - took longer to find than most of my wants ,although the rayons does crop up a tad more frequentl than tony ashley ( great vocalist ! )

Dysonsoul replied to Manfromsoul45s's topic in All About the SOUL
Enjoyed the album tracks kitch tunes we tend to forget about-dya like my none existant c/d recording method..... not sure if it was dean or duggie but someone cut the cheese or sprayed fart spray in that small hot room ,that's why we forgot certain titles ! -
If no one does one by next saturday will get chalky to post it up from my place ( if it's ok for me to use chalky's name ...ah ..)

Re the eric tig - mr dj / heaven i had a root around and found a couple of copies of it , feel sure i found these years ago - although you may be right jason may have discovered this (jason wasn't the connection guy on the tuska 45's but he has and does find me great records for sure ) maybe he can remember ? this 45 is a muscle shoals recording released on a south carolinas logo and is in the kiddie soul style in vogue at the moment with the passing of m.jackson- i don't remember ever playing this out as it isn't quite strong enough, funnily enough it sounds better than i remember it. I agree bob the - tig + rounders 45 is a pleasant 45 to own. the grace gospel singers apparently released a album(s) on the tuska logo, also there is other albums ( has anyone ever seen them ?) this logo i'm sure has a larger release output than we could ever have imagined.the owner was black and i'm sure dead now taking the secrets with him and leaving the records in a tiny no go neighberhood just outside atlanta !
-
Re the Tuska logo i have found it to be a very interesting with many various styles of black music,of course different strokes for different folks.... for me Richard Marks is a truly fabulous vocalist and talentedsession and studio man the "did you ever lose something " is a 45 i've been plugging for 10 years or so ,it will never be a niter classic but is gaining respect in collecting circles - not forgetting the great funk flip.Like ian points out the "i'm your man" is excellent, the funky 4 corners came out in europe with a picture sleeve (will dig it out ).The jimmy tigg 45 is a typical southern soul sound so won't appeal to most on here anyways....barbara hall's are excellent 45's ..over the years managed to pick em all up from the listing apart from the santa claus 45 which i've never heard ( anyone ever heard it ?) and of course the missing links but maybe one of em gets played under the white paper.. thing is this label has it's own sound and sounds like no other ,like megatone etc does. Will have to get my memory working but some years ago i gave some info to a guy who came visit me from states who is prolific at finding people, after months and months of graft the relevant contacts were made a very elderly and poorly person was spoken to about the past. This family was insulated like tony accardo by way of fate not choice ,from the info passed on to me by the guy there was very little if no interest in what had happened in the past ! although some connections yielded more than others ie copies of all titles including missing numbers and albums are there.Never the less offers of c/ d compilations, publicity of achiements you name it ,even money (which was certainly needed) could not open any doors.one can only presume that the whole situation is lost forever -will try write the full story up at some stage.
-
Now that's all down to whether you want there to be... happy to help ! just had browny on he reckons it's a second issue .. so i reminded him i bought it off him ,so without doubt it is ( sam told me to say that )... nah.
