Have We Gone Full Circle In Northernsoul?
Dysonsoul replied to ImberBoy's topic in All About the SOUL
I understand the basics of the thread but not sure simon what the middleton, maximes and oil and water comes into it.. R the 2 mentioned venues the saviour of the scene.... -
Young nicholas asked me if i'd got it off him , but it wasn't ... i was up at browny's many moons ago helping him sort spares from his collection and edith brown by chance was one of his spares .. i've been looking for spares ever since .Infact even when i worked there i don't remember there being any copies in tod towers of course i may be wrong... it's certainly a tricky one but must be around .

Aye joan ,the way it happened was rob thomas and myself used to play oddball things to each other - when he played that to me i said if you ever sell it lemme know cos i'll make that a popular tune.A short time passed and rob gave me a recording of it to cut ( it is a unissued tape) and said play it out which i did and the rest as they say is history.Whether rob or anyone else spun it at anytime i ain't sure but untill i started playing it it was basically only known by a few. When it got popular which didn't take long loads of folk wanted recordings of it but i told them all to ask rob because it wasn't really mine to give away,so i can only assume rob recorded it for these other folk who've been playing it.All that aside it's a fantastic record that always reminds me of the great niters at sheridans and gave me a lot of pleasure playing it out - certainly one of the better records that i've broke over the years.

Are Records Sold On This Site More Expensive Than Average?
Dysonsoul replied to Pete S's topic in Look At Your Box
Quite right, it's pretty simple you put a sales list up people will buy them not buy them.pricing is something that comes with experience - i never ever use the guides if i'm cheap fine if i'm expensive fine... i certainly ain't into auctioning items never have infact- it really is a private transaction between seller and buyer - too much commenting on lists .forget soul-source or ebay or auctions for prices ,get on the shop floor at venues and do the deal.To gain peoples trust simply has to be earned like respect. -
Excellent read and extremely informative and relevant to that golden era of black music, one wonders how many lost master tapes there is kicking around.i remember years ago my mate allan answered a add in discoveries magazine from a guy selling tapes of soul snd unissued soul,he was expecting c90 tdk's when the package came it was original reel to reels of ,60's onederful and m pac including otis clay ,harold burrage ,johnny sayles - different mix's unrelased stuff i have some of it on cassette ,sure he gave em to ady c at kent to rescue cos some of the tapes were in poor shape.... one never knows what was on them !

F..kin spiders am glad i don't go to niters ,especially in the midlands...

Selling at events certainly isn't what it used to be,but again it depends on venue, usually collectors venues like wilton or bidds still have loads of deals taking place.jesus been many moons since i was getting 300 new sales every week.... Mind you was just thinking a lot of folk i deal with don't go on ebay and certainly don't come on sites like this,so in effect the soul-source world is in some ways in it's own price and availability bubble which in reality can be miles away !
-
Aye it just shows ,i thought i'd come across it again but not had a spare since and it will remain cheap till i find it again.... ah ... joking...
-
I can certainly relate to the above statement,i tend to speak from the shop floor perspective ie venues, lists and site selling.to be honest everything seems to tittle along as it always has,but so many deals are going through the week in private for large amounts of money over sea's and here in uk, certainly it's down to having the right records but always has been . i think most deals should be private certainly when they're oddball 45's that buyers want to keep stum on.I'd say there's never been as many people into buying original soul 45's,be it hotboxing or hoarding - hard times will always come and go but if you love your records then they're here to stay.. re browny he's let maybe 100 and odd 45's go most of them being well into 4 figures, there are a few reasons for it and it ain't owt to do with the bottom dropping out of it. there's one thing for sure i'll keep buying things i ain't got.
-
In reality for as long as i can remember the top is a 1 man show, not just northern but most genres and styles mr dobson. my reason for posting is having heard most of the above names they are all enthusiastic, progressive and most importantly nice folk and a credit to the scene !

Correct we don't tell our dj's what to play, wrong we don't tell them they have to talk,it just so happens that there's at least 3 dj's who are residents at lifeline that are in the top 10 on the planet and have been for a while all who use the mike to a high standard not like bingo callers or such like but to educate and inform and most of the time the mike use gets positive feedback from the crowd.According to previous posts use of the mike is due to the dj's inability to keep a set flowing and used to break in different tempos nah ,actually none use of mike is a real weakness in a dj regardless of what records he plays.look back over the years and count how many of the best dj's didn't use the mike... not sure what the ha ha comment meant but all this is my opinion of course ,maybe if arthur fenn ,dave thorley or any other current dj's would maybe comment of course in a light hearted manner ...
-
Quite right, ireally think it's unproffesional not using the mike - anybody can play a hours set one after another.infact our lass knows bugger all about the music but pointed out to me at a venue when some one played without speaking " i could have done that " . of course each to their own but it's certainly compulsary at lifeline regardless of the profile of the dj....

What's The Most You'd Pay For That Long Time Elusive Want?
Dysonsoul replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in Look At Your Box
Near enough, infact me and browny bought a collection between us a long time ago and we flipped a coin for first choice and i won it much to brownys dismay.. i got the gwen owens promo it was mint and played through ,was on the same press as the ones gwen brought over to prestatyn although she brought issue copies over, confirming the 2 different presses.like dave says john phillips got it. -
You know i try not to get embroiled with these threads anymore but as for this getting hammered and being played twice the same night at lifeline, then lifeline ain't for you you cos this is the kinda tune we're trying to break and it needs a handfull of dj's to play them ! it's a pretty damn good discovery and as for there being more copies than people think mmmmm.... send em my way please ,think people will find there aren't any copies to buy cos the guy who found em for me is stand on and trustworthy and i certainly haven't had a sniff of one since from any other source.

Nah baz,he's never had the pleasure of participating in the wonderful world of martial arts ! i tried getting him training on many occasions... maybe on his zoo trips he secretly practices with the shaolin monks in those highly skilled ,tiger, snake, mantis and other animal forms..... he's my pal and a twat at times but all this stuff is pretty much tongue in cheek in manifesto especially with sam whom he has respect for.. mind you he has pops at me at times infact i've been at his house when he's been writing stuff, if i actually thought it was serious i'd have pulled his fingernails out a long time ago.. knowledge and collection phew pretty damned impressive !
-
The deep ballad flip is of course incredible !

"de-rarified" Over The Years Thru Ebay ?
Dysonsoul replied to Marc Forrest's topic in Look At Your Box
Tend to agree with above views and mike v's,there are certainly 45's on the list that really don't belong on there.. i ain't never been on popsike nor do i have time to look at how many of certain 45's have been on the bay, i guess the better titles that go through the bay would've found there way over here but hidden from the masses in private deals to buyers or by the now seemingly prehistoric sales lists by mail .either way these choice items have massive publicity and exposure due to ebay or excellent sites like our very own soul source. In reality too much paranoia and panic over number of copies of 45's ,a 25 copy record is still bloody rare ! -
quite simply too many to know em all, considering there's at least 3 poor, sub standard soul 45s to every decent 1.... i reckon..... but playing through those poor ones aswell as the decent ones is the only way to get started on the long road ahead....

HI kev, just a quick mail of thanks for changing the february date at kings hall ,this certainly proves that sitting down for 10 minutes talking through and planning dates - ie working together can eradicate the negativity of clashing ! We certainly had a great nite at stoke - no doubt this niter takes some beating in it's field...
-
You know i sometimes struggle to get it , next year your february date clashes with ours and we got a couple of the same residents ie the 2 dj's named above ,so how does that work ? but it's nice of you to wish us the best of luck in one line then point out that clashes are inevitable in the next ... inevitable but avoidable if one plans things out. anyways will be a few of us in on saturday one of the girls birthdays...will kev be there ?

If you read the rules from the start you would know it was going private at some stage and the current price is always on show.....it's on John's front page. Chalky on Andy's PC
