Interview with Fab and Jay - Martiniques, Moments & Tempos
Dysonsoul replied to G F's topic in Look At Your Box
Thoroughly enjoyed this interview, fantastic stuff, great photo of Jay Davis too! -
It seems the "The Low Rider" labelling has become a selling tool for many ill informed record dealers to inflate prices of group soul, deep soul, big city soul , sweet soul, Jamaican etc All of a sudden these genres have become in vogue with collectors ( which isn't a bad thing ) but to re label them and call them all " Low Rider " is bad form. I know exactly what " Low Rider " is, but maybe one of the L A guys on here could put this to bed...

These articles never seem to come across well , good luck to the those being interviewed with their events. But I have never known any racism while on the scene and I'm positive my black friends havent ...Black, Brown, White, Pink or Yellow it dont matter on this scene in fact it would not be tolerated! Neither does it how anyone dances. The staring is more than likely to be a side effect of the gear or beer... It seems certain factions of the youngsters have isolated themselves setting their own separate scenes, we all mixed in together and learned the game as we went along.

Just where is NS heading in the future?
Dysonsoul replied to Hooker1951's topic in All About the SOUL
To be fair number 1 and number 3 need, or needed the number 2 lot ( to a lesser extent now, ie records filtering through to the masses ) The bottom line is N.S has never been more popular, that applies to venues , punters and record buyers - anyone saying its dead or finished needs to give their head a shake, its far from dead. There really is no upfront scene because they are way too far up their own arse and are the worst for not turning out ( I say this and im on that side of it all) Not only that they knock and belittle the oldies crowd who in all fairness turn out every weekend! Too many sub standard venues with sub standard dj's on, it really could do with one major nighter on every week or two - get everyone in the same room ... that won't happen, I mean look at the lack of respect on this thread ...- 185 comments

Nashville Matrix used to run double page or at least big adverts in Record World, I have then but they are out of reach in my loft, there were a full list of services and photos of them at work.

I just checked some notes I made from a 2 hour cam corder interview I did with Martin, I was wrong on it being his first visit to Detroit that was Late October 1967, So when he saw and bought copies it would have been a year or so later as a new release, his words "they were everywhere". As for him checking the run out details,i couldn't say, but as a rule he is very meticulous with stuff like that, for example when I worked at Anglo everything sent over was in strict alphanumerical order , any label variation, artist ,title misspellings all had his hand written explanation on the sleeve! He goes on to say he found 6 white promos a little later and also at a distributer in Columbus Ohio Masses of E P on Ashford and the Fuzz on Calla etc.. ( which press I dont know) it didn't seem to relevant at the time ( it could be on the dvd - I will re watch it) As a relation to this Archer subject he said in the early 80's he and Coachman planned on visiting the plant but were told the week previous most if not all the remaining dead stock had been recycled due to the soaring oil prices. The lack of data from Archer, proves that half the stuff online is very inconsistent , history gets re written daily on the scene!

AH ok then!, even in the 90's it was kicking around for 50 to 60 quid I had a fair few over the years, the stamp differences was standard knowledge back then.
-
This record is not rare on first issue, yes the white promo is - when I spoke to Martin Koppel about his early trips he said they were in every shop he went in on his first trip to Detroit ( which wasn't too long after its release) He said there were loads of them!
-
Sad to hear, worked with Jimmy and he worked some of our doors - a good old school bloke who was to be trusted !
-
I thought it was quite mild....To be more precise, they are on the whole a racket run by failed dj's and record dealers!
-
Unless its unreleased, none of them - they are like a disease!
-
There are loads of quality records to buy on a budget, I think dj's and to a certain extent collectors have become a little lazy ( maybe the internet played a part in that ) do it the proper way, look through boxes , tape swap , badger reputable dealers to do you a sales tape of there cheaper stuff, go to the states, go to your mates to listen to their stuff, work hard at it !

When I was at Anglo American circa early 90's Tom Creeden was a guy that was a old friend of Martin Koppel's (perfect for a Detroit collector, considering Martin probably found as many 45's from that city as anybody else) who bought Detroit label 45's of all styles. I can remember packing parcels of the stuff up to send to him, just how complete his collection was I really couldn't say but certainly no Frank Wilson ( the copies of that are well documented and that's all there is) I certainly don't recall mailing out big ticket Northern titles, maybe he already owned them. That aside Tom is one of quite a few private collectors who choose to do it that ways like Mike says we should respect their privacy.

Enjoying a full all-nighter without gear is it possible?
Dysonsoul replied to Hooker1951's topic in All About the SOUL
Mick you have always been jammy, I spent most of the night moving from table to table with my pint pot - hoping and praying some good hearted soul would spike me ah .... It wouldn't be the same without , even the records sound better! -

Oh yeh I forgot about that copy! All good this way mate - catch up soon.
-
I bought a copy of this in 1990 from a dealer in Georgia who said he got it off the artist, I then picked another up a few years later. Like Mark rightly says the Japanese really were (are) the leaders in most kinds of soul music - although this imo isn't strictly deep soul, it is exactly what they like. In fact to further back this point up I first became aware of the record from a couple of the famous huge Far Eastern wants lists from the mid 80's. This side is still a firm favourite after all those years.

What a fascinating interview, Sam Motley sounds like a real character - I bet he was a great laugh to be around! I recognised his name but never realised how often his name appeared on records I own....Thanks for posting this up.

Happiness Is Here - Groovesville or Topper
Dysonsoul replied to Mick Holdsworth's topic in Look At Your Box
I have the 10" acetate of this , which was part of Gillys collection that i bought from him - it is credited to and written as Tobie Lark. -
The Funny face girl original acetate has been in my collection for a fair few years now, The Chris Bartley acetate Allan coney traded it to me many moons ago, i recently sold it to a mate in Europe.
