Complete Beginners Guide To Northern Soul

I agree with the criticisms. Its not a question of who has put this CD out, it is just another money making scheme amongst so many others by the same crew. Have a look at the bootlegs on ebay put out by this lot to confirm my point. -
Anyone remember the minutes silence for Pete Lawson? Immediately followed by "Girl across the street?" And they handed out copies of the Ormskirk Advertisers front page with Petes story as the headline.

A true legend in every way----very very sad news indeed. RIP Levi, your memory will live on in your music.

Too true, looks like Liam etc have joined the Casino Circus--------- what are they appearing on next, celebrity Northern Soul dancin' on ice? Glad to see the younger generation keeping the Wigan flag flying................

I've been reading this thread with interest and would just like to comment on one or two of the opinions expressed in it. We run a venue that likes to think of itself as being a little different to most of the others in the area---quite difficult in this part of the country as it seems to be dominated by the Wigan oldies brigade. This manifests itself in the profusion of venues that operate in the locality, venues that spin not only 100% overplayed oldies but which also play boots, cd's, reissues, etc. I will not name these venues on here but within a 30 mile range I can think of over a dozen just off the top of my head. The reason we started the soul nights at Burscough British Legion was simply to offer something different---we never claimed to be ultra rare or tried to compete with the nighters, we just wanted an alternative music policy. We play only 100% original vinyl and as I said before we steer away from the top 500, not an easy thing to do in this neck of the woods. Many of the tunes we play are what I would call "underplayed oldies", mixed with nighter sounds and some rareities. We have endured criticism from all sides because of this---the oldies brigade who don't know most of the stuff we play and aren't prepared to give it a try and certain people on here who object to us running monthly soul nights which may or may not interfere with their precious allnighter scene. We run our nights on the same Saturday of each month and we have clashed from time to time with some allnighters. This is not intentional and indeed it is the nighters that have changed their dates, so who is to blame? Are we not allowed to run monthly soul nights or do we have to get permission from the allnighter promoters before we arrange our dates? A number of people attend our venue and then go on to a nighter when these date clashes occur, so where is the conflict of interest there? Sorry to go on a bit but some people on this forum are so far up their own behinds that they should shave their arses and walk backwards.

Don't know if this is the right place to put this, but here goes! Work Your Soul!! Saturday 17th. May 2008 sees the second night of 60s Club Soul, Ska, Rocksteady, Blue Beat, R&B and Skinhead Reggae at the Grandstand Club, Southport FC, Haig Avenue, Southport. PR8 6JZ. Our first event took place a couple of months ago at the same venue and although the numbers attending were only between 30---40 it was a great night. The music was a mix of 60s soul, R&B and original Jamaican ska, rocksteady, etc. Everyone had a ball---so much so that we were invited to do another by the clubs management. So if you fancy listening to some of this stuff come along to the Grandstand Club on the 17th. May-----should be a crackin' night and we expect the attendance to be well up as the word has got round about how good the first one was! The night runs from 7.30pm----12.30am and admission is £4 on the door-----so come along for a superb night of moonstompin' sounds!

Underplayed Soul Night-burscough British Legion
Brookesy replied to Brookesy's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes, I remember the Barons, just around the corner from the British Legion. It was a lot more R&B orientated than what we are doing now, as I said before we play a variety of types of music from R&B, Jamaican R7B, 60s Club Soul, underplayed northern, crossover and some modern. Dave Byrne is booked for four spots this year, we have a rota of DJs and different guests each month to keep things varied and fresh. -

Hi there.....only me again with a final few words on this subject. When I posted this thread I was not expecting the response it received, I just wanted to have my say before someone else got in before me! I must say the backing we have received from everyone on Soul Source has been tremendous and we truly appreciate all the positive comments posted. Ta very much! The event at the Legion is advertised as a night of quality underplayed across the board Soul and R&B. We do not use the term "Northern Soul" as we know this can lead to misunderstanding, but we are not against oldies being played at our venue as long as they fit in with our music policy. As I mentioned before we do not want a rarest of the rare night, just an alternative to some of the other nights currently running in the area. This is reflected in the varied playlist we have-----underplayed oldies, rare Motown, Soulful Crossover and Modern, Rockin' R&B, 60s Club Soul and even some Jamaican R&B. Putting music into various categories like this only leads to more confusion sometimes----I prefer the term "rare soul" but even this can be misinterpreted by some. So we have a night that simply plays something a bit different than an average oldies night but whether people like it or not is a different matter! The only way to find out is to come and have a listen for yourselves and see what you think. Some of the sounds that have proved popular at the Legion in the last couple of months are listed below, but this is not a definitive list and is only off the top of my head---there is loads of other stuff we also play, I just can't remember it all! Sam & Dave----You aint no big thing La Brenda Ben----Chaperone Chosen Few---Birth of a playboy Roger Hatcher---Sweetest girl in the world Oscar Perry---He sent me you Lenny Welch----Hundred pounds of pain Pioneers---My good friend James Sugar Simone----I wanna know Joyce Bond---Tell me what it's all about Danny Moore----Somebody new George Byrd----I'm available Errol Dixon---I want Bottom & Co----Gonna find a true love Billy Davis----Skanky San Francisco TKOs----Make up your mind Chancellors----All the way from heaven Volumes----My kind of girl Exits----Under the streetlamp Pentagons----I wonder Martha Reeves----Love guess who Vanguards----The thought of losing your love All these tunes, plus many more have been played at the Legion-----come along on the 22nd. March if it is to your taste, and have a listen! -

Ta for that----the next event is on Saturday 22nd. March and it takes place on every fourth Saturday of the month. Burscough is in Lancashire on the A59 Liverpool----Preston road (L40 4BZ) and no, we don't play big money records just because of the price tag! Hope to see you soon. -

I know you are right mate and I see the error of my ways now. Next time I will let them in for nothing, buy their ale all night and pay for their taxis home. And give them a nice friendly pat on the bum as they leave. -
Underplayed Soul Night-burscough British Legion
Brookesy replied to Brookesy's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi there......thanks for your comment, no the venue isn't a large one, we've had an average of 70----80 people attending so far and the place looks pretty much full with that amount of people there. We did run an oldies night three or four miles up the road in a different town which was very popular and it ran for a while in conjunction with this one. When we started the Legion up it was a completely new night---as far as I know there hadn't been any dedicated soul nights at this venue before us. We do not run this venue as a money making venture---we do it because we love the music and if numbers do dip as a result of us us "enforcing" our music policy then so be it, we will accept it. I would just like to say to everyone who has taken the time to read this posting and reply to it that we really appreciate it-----we were debating to pack it all up on Saturday night after all the hassle, but the support of real soulies has only strengthened our resolve to keep on with what we are doing. Many thanks. -
Just a few words regarding a soul night we run at Burscough British Legion. The event is advertised as an across the board underplayed soul night and has been running since summer 2007. The reason we chose this particular music policy was because of the lack of local venues in the area playing underplayed sounds. In a twenty mile radius I could name a dozen events with a strictly oldies music policy----nothing wrong with that but we just wanted to try something a bit different. We do not try to run a rarest of the rare night, the music we play is a mixture of underplayed oldies, r&b, rare motown and a bit of crossover and modern. Unfortunately some of the people who attend our venue cannot seem to grasp the music policy. There is a certain group who constantly harass the DJs to play overplayed oldies and one or two have given in to them and strayed from the desired music policy. Our last event took place on Saturday 23rd. February and started off really well----a good mix of across the board sounds which is what we state in our advertising. Unfortunately the aforementioned group attended the venue and started requesting sounds that are not appropriate to our policy. This led to the guest DJs playing tunes that were inappropriate to the night and resulted in a bit of ill feeling. Possibly I was wrong but I went on stage, took the mike and had words regarding the music and if people didn't like it they could always attend a number of other venues in the local area that will cater for their tastes. A group of people took offence and left the venue---never to return, I hope. My point is, if I attend a venue with a particular music policy I would not dream of trying to change that policy. We are not trying to achieve anything revolutionary at Burscough, just play something a bit different to give people an alternative to all the oldies venues in the local area. Your comments would be much appreciated in this matter.
