  14. I've just been contacted by Jimmy McCracken from Radio Merseyside who is hosting a new soul show on Saturday nights on the station. The format will be a mix of Motown, Northern Soul, 60s/70s Club Classics and some more up to date stuff. Jimmy said if the show does ok it will become a permanent fixture of the stations schedule----requests, gig info and feedback are all welcome and each week will see a guest "soul selector" who will play a number of their favourite tunes. The show will run from 8pm---10pm each Saturday evening and can be listened to again by going onto the Radio Merseyside website and clicking on the "listen again" button. Hope this is of some interest and loads of people get involved----Merseyside has never been known for its burgeoning soul scene but hopefullty this show (with your help) will generate a bit of interest in the area and become a permanent fixture of the stations schedule. Atb.....Tony

  17. Chris. To be honest I can't be arsed carrying on this argument, but as a final comment I would just like to clarify one or two points you have brought up and rectify some mistakes. We started Ormskirk Soul Club at the Comrades Club on Saturday 31st March 2007 (after running events at Ormskirk Civic Hall for the previous 3 years) and held events on the fourth Saturday of the month after that, on Saturday 28th April and Saturday 26th May. We finished the events at the Comrades Club due to problems with the venue and moved to Burscough British Legion, again holding our events on the fourth Saturday of the month starting on 30th June 2007. As far as I am aware we never clashed with either the Monaco Soul Club or Formby Halls during this time (Monaco has always been 1st Saturday of the month and Formby Halls 3rd Friday and now 3rd Saturday)----indeed these two events are run by the same promoters so why would they be held on the same night? As for Middlewich British Legion we have never considered it to be a local venue (too far away from Ormskirk or Burscough) so it would not have affected the planning of any of our event dates. The music policy at Burscough Legion was completely different to Ormskirk Civic Hall-----the Civic was always an oldies venue, Burscough has more of an underplayed musical policy. We started running nights at the Civic again in tandem with the Legion because local people asked us to----the music policy at the Legion was not to their liking and they wanted a place to go locally. However,we could never get a regular date at the Civic and therefore held the events when the venue was available but always tried not to clash with other local venues. However the Civic proved untenable in financial terms so we stopped the events for good after just a few events. Ormskirk Civic was already an established venue when we ran our Motown and Classic Soul events, it had been run for the previous three years by us so it was not a new event but a continuation of an existing one----we ran two completely different events a few miles apart with seperate music policies and mostly a different crowd at each one. As I have said before I do not want a slanging match with you, but you state that you do not run any other events other than Radcliffe. If you are prepared to bring up things from 2007 then you should also remember an event from a few months ago that you helped to co-promote---the Stafford Reunion. I also mentioned that your event does not have a great affect on our venue as it only clashes 2--3 times a year. When I posted my original comments they were aimed at other local promoters more than yourself, but you are the only one who has replied. As for the numbers at our venue being on the wane this is far from the truth. Considering where we are located and the type of music we play we have always done well with consistent numbers attending our events from all over the North West and beyond. We could have taken the easy route and gone down the oldies road---we would definitely have had higher attendances but we chose not to do this. Our numbers are as good now as when we first started and show no signs of dropping off----new people come to Burscough constantly along with a hard core of regular punters so I don't think I have to look any closer to home. This is the last I will write on this subject, you are welcome to come over to Burscough at any time and we will extend the same welcome to you that we do to everyone else who attends our events. Tony
  18. Thats very true Paul, if this venue takes place it will be the fourth event to be taking place in Warrington------why? The only reason I can possibly think of is money-----pack 'em in, play overplayed bootleg oldies and count the cash. The amount of venues in this area is staggering-----not just Warrington but everywhere in a thirty mile radius of Manchester, why do we need more?
  19. I was merely stating the facts as I see them----when we started the Legion there were no other local nights on and now there are. Is it wrong to say this? Yes you have in the past sent out our details on your mailing list, and thanks for that. The point I was trying to make was the profusion of events which in my opinion is spoiling the scene as a whole. To be honest your events are probably the least of our worries as they take place on a bi-monthly basis on the last Saturday of the month and only clash with us probably 3 or 4 times a year. Which is a shame in itself because we would probably support your nighters on a regular basis if this clash of dates did not occur. I do not want to become part of a slanging match with you, the facts are that we were running our events before any of the other venues started up in this area---we have never altered our dates and have always run on the fourth Saturday of the month.
  20. Yes
  21. From a purely personal point of view I would just like to add my views. We started Burscough Legion three years ago simply because we wanted to offer something a little bit different to the bog standard bootleg oldies venues that were being run (and still are) in this neck of the woods. Our music policy has always been a mix of underplayed oldies, uptempo R&B, lesser played tunes, etc and we have stuck with this policy throughout our time at the Legion. We chose to run our events on the fourth Saturday of each month as at the time there was nothing on locally to clash with. Since we started three new events have started up within 30 miles of us---two nighters and a soul night, and in each case all of these venues are being organised by people who also run at least one other venue. To put it simply, its killing the local scene---these people don't give a shit about established venues and the effect their events have upon them. On another note the amount of weekenders springing up around the country is also a major cause of declining numbers at established soul events. Just my opinion, of course.
