  9. We're planning a trip to Memphis and New Orleans this year----anyone got any ideas of places to go, record shops, juke joints, live music venues, etc? We've got a few ideas about Memphis already---Stax museum, Sun records, Al Greens church, museum of civil rights, Beale Street, Mississippi boat trip and of course Gracelands! Just wondered if anyone has any suggestions of anything a bit different. Same goes for New Orleans----the French Quarter, plantation tour, a visit to the swamps, steam boat etc but is there anything else we should see while we are there? Any suggestions would be most welcome---thanks for your time! Tony & Lisa

  11. You're always causing trouble you, Joan....ha ha! If the Wheel had been an opera house, jazz club or ballet school there would have been no question of it being demolished, in fact it would probably have qualified for lottery funding to keep it open. The fact that it is a working class venue and part of a working class scene in the North West of England has got a lot to do with it.
  12. If anyones interested in signing the petition I've included a link below. This was started by the gay and lesbian community who run various events at the club which is now called Legends. As I said before, don't know if it will do any good but it can't do much harm! https://www.change.org/petitions/manchester-city-council-save-legends-nightclub
  13. Strange how a couple of months ago when the 100 Club was threatened with closure all and sundry on here were crying about it. Same thing happens with the Wheel and people can't wait to knock the place. Is part of the reason because the Wheel is in the north of England? I was too young to go to the original Wheel but went to the nighters held every Bank Holiday Sunday in the 80s / early 90s. They were top nights and it was brilliant to be in the venue where it all started. For people to come on here slagging the place off who obviously never go is just another variation of the same old argument we have heard time and again, us versus them. Gets a bit boring after a while. I don't attend many oldies venues these days but for those who do what is wrong with 600 people actually enjoying themselves on a Sunday afternoon? If you don't want to go then don't bother, I'm sure you won't be missed. Don't know why people can't let individuals make their own minds up regarding the type of event they attend instead of dictating what type of music they should or should not be listening to. A lot of jealousy from some quarters, methinks. For anyone who is interested there is a petition on Facebook regarding the proposals for the Wheel , don't know if it will do any good but you never know. Personally I think it would be a shame if the Wheel were to close permanently, I know it's not everyones cup of tea but they must be doing something right to get the crowds they do. May even pop along this Sunday................

  17. Our night at Burscough British Legion takes place on the same night as the Champions League Final-----we have no intention of moving our event to a different date but have made provision for people who would like to watch the game and attend our night at the same time. We have arranged with the Legion to open up at 7.30pm and the club has agreed to let non-members into the members lounge which has two tv sets, one in the members bar and a seperate tv lounge with a large screen. We may also provide sandwiches, etc if there is any interest. The club is situated nearer to Liverpool than Manchester, but Utd have always had a large following in the area (including myself!). We also attract a significant number of people from the Manchester area who travel over to the Legion because of our music policy so hopefully this will cater for the Reds amongst them! We realise that our numbers will probably be affected whatever we do, but we anticipate another great night at Burscough Legion regardless of the match. And even better if Utd win!
  18. Top spot Phil, really enjoyed what you played. See you soon.
