  1. Got to agree. Thank God, there wasn’t as much talc as last year. The floor is great for gliding around on (saves my 66 year old knees!). Here’s to next October.
  2. I think the other record shop in Oasis was called Soul Galore. Who was the young lady who worked at Graham Warr's mid 70's? Stunner. Couple of shops on the Bristol Road in Selly Oak were great for penniless students. Funky Dunc's was one - soul and disco loving gay. Can't remember the name of the other to save my life but he had a huge box of imports that were about 30p a shot.
  3. Just the one from me. Hits the spot... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxsx7UQu3rY
  4. Dave and Ansel Collins - Double Barrel. Certainly gets the approval of 'those of a certain age'
  5. I'm naive. I go to nighters. I dance. I don't go anywhere near the DJ's. Am I supposed to peep over their shoulder + check that every sound is on original release vinyl? I want a good night. Get real.
  6. I'm more of a lurker on SS than a regular contributor as my evidenced by my number of postings. Don't really take exception to much that's posted - varied opinions because we're all pretty varied folk. I do take exception to a conceited individual like Nick who determines what is a cool style of dance and what is 'div dancing'. I see dancers who I think are better than me and I see dancers who I think are worse than me. Does it bother me? Does it fcuk! Are they enjoying themselves? Am I enjoying myself? Does their manner of dance impinge on me and my enjoyment of the niter? The answers should be self-evident. Live and let live. Sad bugger (Nick, that is)
  7. I love watching the footage of 60's / 70's soul singers and groups that plays on the screen in the main room at Kings Hall. Only problem is, you can't hear the bloody music. Put that in the second room, get some armchairs, where I can get myself together (song there somewhere) before entering the fray again. Might want to provide waitress service, comfy slippers and a glass of port. Failing that, underplayed oldies will do me.
  8. Hi Spook, Think I remember chatting to you when you were running a night at The Wayfarer, Stone - must be 10 years plus ago. Where are you outside Eccy? I'm @ Fairoak, just off the Loggerheads Rd. Guess you've got an Audi TT - have to come and have a play with my motor.
  9. Looking for a photo of a mate who died 3 weeks ago and found these from Shropshire.
  10. Lived at Priorslee from 84 til about 90. Anyone remember the monthly nites at Shifnal Village Hall? Still got my 'Catch a Groove' membership. Looking back through the topic, might have been run by Ian Carvell. Also used to got some of Esher's nites, including a Niter at the Court Centre, Madeley - was it the 84 / 86 Club? Think he also did a brilliant night at a village hall nearer Stourbridge - Worston?? There were also nites down at a pub in Ironbridge - think it was the Malthouse.
  11. It grieves me to admit to never having visited The Torch but I can put you in touch with Ian (TNT) Turner. He doesn't do much DJ'ing now but I was able to persuade him to do my 50th Birthday Bash a couple of years ago. (It was only because we were both in Bradder Scouts). He was a few years older than me at school and it was only when he came to Brum Uni, backing Emperor Rosko, that I learnt a bit about his taste in music.
  12. Hi, finally registered on the forum today after hanging round for a couple of years. During the mid - late 70's, I was at Birmingham University with a great mate from Hereford. He was seriously into his Northern and I thought I was pretty obsessed. He went to Wigan, Mecca, St Ives, Yate.... We hitched to Yate or got the coach from Birmingham (run by a girl as I remember) and set up Brum Uni Soul Club. Had monthly sessions at the Student Union. Anyway, down to the nitty-gritty - anyone know what happened to Dougie? We both graduated in Physics!!! and last I heard he went off to Israel or was it Mars in Slough? Love to get in touch again; did try phoning up various 'Bishops' in Hereford a couple of years ago to try and invite him to my 50th but got no joy. Still think he'll just bump into me at the Kings Hall one night. Cheers.
