The Forty Five Kings Collective have just released a new mix featuring one of the innovators and originators of the Deep Funk scene, Greg Belson. We are overjoyed to present this historic mix for your listening pleasure featuring one of the innovators and originators of the Deep Funk scene, Greg Belson. Greg Belson’s Origins of Deep Funk – Forty Five Kings Mix – July 2020 The origins of the club night ‘Deep Funk’ were borne out of the coming together of essentially two separate club sessions that evolved in the early 90’s. Keb Darge’s ‘Humpty Dump’ located at the Leisure Lounge in Central London, and Greg Belson’s ‘Urban Soul’ at the Clarence Hotel in Surrey. The two DJ’s started trading ideas of a pivotal session after each had appeared as a guest at the other promoter’s night. The year was 1994 when the direction took shape for both Keb & Greg to work together on an all-encompassing funk event in London Town. Ideas were thrown around, guest DJ’s were talked about and venues discussed….Keb called the night ‘Deep Funk’, Ormonds was the perfect two floor venue to launch our initial concept, and the DJ’s were put in place to carry the night forward. The inaugural night of ‘Deep Funk’ took flight on 27th January 1995. These 45’s are just some of the records that made up the backbone of that first session….tracks that already had a grounding at ‘Urban Soul’ and ‘Humpty Dump’….at ‘Deep Funk’ however, they would go on to become classics within our scene. Some 25 years later, they can be regarded as the ‘Origins of Deep Funk’.

In early February 2020, I visited Memphis TENN to hit the crates & dig deep into the well of unbelievable music created in that legendary city. I arrived with an empty record box when after 1 day in to the dig, I received an invite from 2 of the key players at this premo new DJ spot to play a set on the following Saturday. Pretty cool...3 days to dig out the goodness with a final 1 hour showcase at the weekend! I didn’t want to pillage the mighty Stax catalog as I know the local folks will have that on lock…..I wanted to mine the soul of gospel labels Designer, D-Vine Spirituals, Philwood & Prabay, whilst seeking out some soul & funk rarities next to the cheaper, overlooked business. It was a wild trip putting this together, & I ended up over running my allotted set time by 25 minutes! Thanks so much to Eight and Sand @ The Central Station Hotel, Otis Shredding, Memphi$ Jones, McLemore & Daniel Mathis that made this one pretty special.

Sorry I can't help with a copy myself, but here's an FYI....the 45 is much harder to find than the LP....and if you're not too bothered about format, the LP is cut nice and loud, so plays really well. Cheers!

Greg Belson's Divine Disco 2 is in stores everywhere today! Check out this great review from one of our favorite retailers Dusty Groove ... "A pretty fantastic selection of rare disco tracks from the American underground – all of them infused with a spiritual message, but served up with grooves that go head to head with some of the best underground club of the time! The mix of positive energy and upbeat grooves is wonderful – and if you've ever heard the Clark Sisters club classic "You Brought The Sunshine", then you'll definitely know the spirit of these tunes! If you're worried about the message being one that you're not into, don't – because there's sort of a universal spirit going on here – one that gets past conventions of the church, and which really goes for a general uplifting message that's totally great – almost a precursor to some of the positive house in more recent decades. And speaking of house, there's less of that here than you'd expect – as most of the instrumentation and production are strongly in the best New York underground modes from the disco years – with less of any 80s or electro soul elements." Divine Disco Vol. 2 digs deeper into the privately pressed, independently distributed gospel music with that dancefloor touch. Shining the light on these amazing artists for the first time! Available from all good retail outlets both physical and online NOW! And you can check out a promo mix for the compilation right here; Thanks for your support!
