  1. Two different mixes, vinyl copy infinitely superior in my opinion, and first issue I think. First saw it in Kev Roberts sales box at the same time as Mistura "Life is a song". Later issue, weaker mix, in stryrene, surfaced quite a bit later via Soul Bowl I think.
  2. Sounds very disappointing - and expensive! What hotel are you staying at?
  3. Jimmy Wensiora gave me his copy when he sold up (late 80's?), and to the best of my recollection it didn't have any writing on - it looks like various owners of these copies have written on them themselves. I always assumed it was a test for one of those 70's Monarch boots that ended up being shelved.
  4. That is incredibly sad news, for many years John and I were contempories and competitors, but once we had got past the teenage angst I'd like to think we were friends, he will be missed. My condolences to Ange and his family.
  5. Rob most definitely has one, and used to play it in his warm up spots (before he got to the good stuff as he put it) around early '76. Like many great tracks, they only become in demand when a big name dj plays them. He was playing "Call me" Eddie Bishop around the same time - though we did try to stop him... Nabay came from the Selectadisc warehouse, along with many other Detroit titles, most were the more common Ric Tic/Golden World kind of titles but some real surprises came out of there.
  6. Was over there in January, it was pretty quiet. We were in Varadero much of the time, but when we were in Havana I didn't see or hear any reference to soul.
  7. There is also a video on you tube of a track by Phil Lowman called "Look at me" on Emage that also uses the "Penguin breakdown" backing track. Sadly unable to work out how to upload link - sorry about that.
  8. I seem to recall it being a John Vincent tip (in Frank Elsons column) when he dj'd at Wigan - but I can't say as I ever actually heard it played. Think he mentioned the Charmaines "Keep on searching" in the same list.
  9. I always try to work on the "if you can't say anything nice" principle. But in all fairness that tune has nothing to do with what I understand to be soul music, so I can understand why people were critical. No need to get too excited though eh?
  10. Andy Lee gave it go back in the 70's following the success of "I don't know what foot to dance on" - no one seemed particularly interested at the time. Great tune though.
  11. I always thought that Kool Blues track was killer too!
  12. Can't remember the Chosen Few ever being played. It was usually Simons "Sounds of Soul" emi disc as I recall. A totally different kettle of fish to the the WCF issue. Amazingly, it isn't on youtube, any got a copy to post and remind us?
  13. Missed that the first time around, what a good read!
  14. It's Breakwater "Say you love me girl" on Arista
  15. Definitely not a Solid Hitbound prod (or for that matter solo) but I have this duet with Neil Pointer from about 1980 in a box somewhere; Thought it might interest someone.
  16. Been a long time since I saw it, but I have an issue of Loyd Price "Love music"/"Just for baby" on a Capitol manufacted issue somewhere.
  17. I thought it was the other way around - long intro on Soft, short intro on Coral? Long time since I owned either but that's how I remember it - have mis rembered all this time?
  18. A very sad day, quite apart from his significance in the world of music, he was a truly lovely guy, always willing to give you the time, and full of fascinating tales. A man who will be missed.
  19. Saw him play it sometime in '75 when he came to the Nottm Palais, he referred to it as a 'New York press' then.
  20. Perhaps you might like to enlighten us as to who you think is more deserving Jane? I'm sure it would make interesting reading.
  21. Hi Steve, I always hoped when I sold up that they would go to "good homes" - job done then! atb, RB
  22. No worries Steve, just curious like! Sold mine about 20 years ago, so definitely a different copy!
  23. Hi Steve, it is indeed a lovely looking label - and a lovely record too. Did you mean you owned my issue or 'a' issue - always curious about where my tunes ended up! Best, Rich B
  24. I thought that about 2001 - but prices have gone up massively since then. So who knows where prices will end up?
  25. Hi Steve, yes it's me. I hope, you're well? Keb must have bought 2 then, I remember the deal well. I couldn't believe he was going to give me an un-defaced Malibus demo and a wd of Rose Battiste. I thought it would be one or the other and because I hesitated he said "I suppose you'll want some cash too, is £25 alright?" Then I had to get Gary (Rushbrooke) to give me a lift home to fetch it! All the best, Rich.
