  4. Just twigged who you are , you worked in the same place as Chris Farr ???? I started going round about the time you , Paul Shirley , Frelick, Ray Smith etc were slowing down a bit (late 75 early 76 ) . I used to hang out with Steve Hodgets , Paul Langford , etc etc ............ Visited you with Tony Worot at your house a few years later :hatsoff2:

    Martyn Smith

You got it Martyn, how are you? are you still on the soul scene? Paul sadly passed away, Ray lives down in Devon his older brother Dave died a while ago as well, Frelick is an international cauliflower smuggler!! and seen Paul for a long while although I think he has a butcher shop in Bedford. I go out for a shuffle around with me nurse now and again.

  5. Thats interesting Neil, as I worked as a printer at Bedford County Press, at the time it was printed and I remember talking to you about the scene in the comp room as the paper was being put togeather, and it just shows how the memory goes with age as I would have sworn it was around 1975, but you must be right. That means I only had another year on the scene before getting married!! Enjoyed your book, all the best, Andy

I was the first staff (ie full time) writer for Echoes. The first issue was dated January 30 1976 (my 22nd birthday) and contained a big spread about the Northern scene by me.

The Cleethorpes piece followed , and again it was writen by me..

Peter Harvey was the editor and loved the idea of the Northern scene, and came up to Cleethorpes for the article, and had a great time. I used to play him tapes at the Echoes office in Newman Street in the West End (just a couple of streets away from Blues & Soul in Hanway Street) with all the big tracks on, and his favourite was "Lord What Happened" - Kenny Smith. We got the Cleethorpes piece in the next issue which meant going straight from Cleethorpes back home to the Midlands, and getting a newspaper photographer there to develop the photos taken at the All-Nighter so Pete could take them the next day to the printers in Bedford

Pete was a lovely man and died in tragic circumstances in the 80's..

:hatsoff2: I USED TO LIKE THE CHIP SHOP, JUST OVER THE BRIGE, IT WAS WUN BY WHAT WE USED TO SAY BACK THEN A "ITIE" I DONT NO IF THAT IS OFFENCEIVE BUT THAT WHAT BEDFORD WAS KNOWN FOR BACK THEN, LITTLE ITALY, WE CALLED IT, AND THE OLD JOKE (Q). "WHY DO BEDFORD BOYS WARE PLIMSOLES"?? (A) SO THEY COULD RUN AWAY FROM THE NORTH HERTS BOOT BOYS, VERY TRUE, THERE ARE VARIATIONS OF THE PLIMSOLE JOKE, THAT USED TO BOOM! OUT OF THE NORTH BANK & THE CHICKEN RUN AT THE BOWLYN, NORMALLY AT OUTHER LONDON CLUBS, BUT THE SPURS GOT IT WORST, WITH THE CLASSIC @TIPTOE THROUGH THE PARK LANE" WERE ALL THE JEW BOYS WORE PLIMSOLES AND CARRIED PLASTIC FLICK KNIVES. I DEGRESS, THE CHIP SHOP OWNER WHEN I ASKED "WHAT PIES HE HAD" USED TO REPLY LISTING THE WHOLE GAMMOT IN BROKEN ENGLISH. A BIT LIKE SVEN, STARTING WITH WELL IIII GOTT A STEAK THE KIDNY, THE CHICKEN THE MUSHROOM. i WOULD WET ME SELF LAUGHING! I HAVE GROWN UP SINCE, YES I WOULD LOVE TO COME DOWN SOME TIME AND SEE YOU ALL, I HAVE LIVED IN WOLVES 30 YEARS NOW, IT IS STRANGE BECAUSE WHEN I DO GO BACK I FIND MYSELF LOOKING FOR PEOPLE AS THEY DID THEN, DENIM JACKET SKINNER JEANS, ALL GETING ON THE SOUL BROTHER COACH TO GO TO WIGAN.

 DAVE KIL (I HAVE A POSTER FOR TONY HE WANTED IF YOU SEE HIM COULD YOU PASS IT ON TO HIM LET ME KNOW IT'S A a4 CIRCA 82 FOR THE REGAL HITCHIN,

Ha!! Trainers!! could only have been Dunlop green flash or those black ones with elasticated sides in those days!! It's more like eastern europe now in Bedford after a spell being twined with Jalabad.

I cant quite place the chippy but I can relate to the type of owner, more like Stavros but without the charm. Come on down as they say, there are a good few still knocking around, theres a bit of a soul night coming up at Stewartby just off J13 M1. Cheers Andy

  9. Yeah I knew all those faces, are you talking about Chris B*******n ? still see Tony W and Hammie, I think we must know each other. The pilgims was a great bar to end up at before or after a niter do you remember the Lair on the he opp side of the river ? it was a back bar of The Anglers Hotel before it burnt down.

Tilly did'nt go to many soul do's in the my time but all the brothers were/are good blokes. I suppose who you remember depends on when you were going and there are a few overlaps, glad you have good memories of Bedford always been a stong soul following here to the day.

    Cheers Andy

  13. hatsoff2.gif Hi in one of the early issues theres a regular feature by Chris Savory. I would be greatful to find a copy thats got a feature about myself and selling records at Wigan Casino, thing is I cant remember the Date, what I do remember not only did he name me but he printed my full address (a Good way to get busted at the time?) i am pretty sure it was in 77 just around the time the Kempston Rovers FC nights started with Franco running the show with Hammy Brillo Me & Mick now & again, can any one remember this little club night held on a Thursday?? any way I would love to have a copy with the article or even a print. I no I have asked before, but had no joy cheers ears. ph34r.gifDAVE KILWORTH (Formally from Letchworth) quite close to the place they dumped the headless man also near to Micks & Taffys. the PITS

Hi, Dthe, I can remember a Thursday night at the Addison Center Kempston and later at Daly's Club on the main road but thought the Rovers was a Friday? Could be wrong as got married around that time and had to stop enjoying myself!!

coincedentaly, I used to print Black Echoes at Beds County Press and met Neil Rushton there a few times as he worked for the paper. I aslo, used to post a copy to an old mate in the navy, who I met at the Casino, called Andy Bate or Bates and thought it was a great laugh to address it to Master Bates, oh stich my sides back up!! Perhaps thats why I never heard from him again.

  14. I remember Jim and there have been a number of questions about Paul Shirley. Paul was one of my best mates, he got back in touch right out of the blue about 4/5 years ago. I know he made contact with Tony Warot and Andy Felts. Sadly Paul took his own life in 2007. Tony, Andy, Tony Hirst and myself went to the funeral in Gt Yarmouth. Very sad. As for the Wigan coaches the driver was called Brian and he used to look after our gear just in case. Are any of you posters from Bedford Paul Aisbit, I think thats the spelling. Anyhow see you guys soon. DJaying tomorrow for the Alan Pollard night here in Stockport. Getting right in the mood for some good sounds. Regards. Steve Foran.

    Steve, PM'd you mate.

    Andy F

  15. Nice one Kimbo, I would think we knew each other depending on the time line, as I gave up the coach for the luxury of Paul Shirley's ( rip) car and then scraped togeather the cash for my own MK1 Cortina complete with Starsky & Hutch stripe. What an embarresment!!

If I remember right, we used to pick up two great girls called angie & Heather from Worcester area and a great bunch of lads from Wales.

I also used to thumb it from Bedford with a mate called Jim Thomas also from Bedford. If we sold a few sounds we would get the bus to Nottingham and then Bedford via Northampton, but that must have been on a Saturday after a Friday niter or could have been after Samanthas. Not many cells left!!

  16. The Bedford coach was also run by Chris Blackburn for quite a few visits to the Casino, picking up all over the place.

The coach company was called R.Souls of Olney!! they dropped the R when they got fed up of the jokes!!

They also got the hump when the driver slept in late and left us all freezing in the snow so we had to break in to the coach to stop shivering.

What you had to go through in the olden days, no mobiles then!!
