I find that playing "forgotten" oldies doesnt seem to go down that well...probably due to the fact that a majority of punters at soul nights (well the ones i tend to go to) these days never actually went to any serious northern venues in the old days! They seem to be more of a "Johnny come lately" crowd who want to hear todays current spins...mainly 70s "easy to get to know ya" type tunes... While we are on the thread, some of my fave forgotten oldies I`d love to play.... The Ethics-Look at me now Donald Lee Richardson- Palm of your hand Volcanos-Storm warning Jodi Mathis-Dont you care anymore Chris

Now updated....and some prices reduced! Chris -
I'd love to read Jon Andersons greatest three hits.. .......... I love talking to John about his finds, and have passed many a happy and pissed up hour with the great man. I could write a book on my experiences but John could write a whole encyclapedia and he has such a great way of telling the tale too... Chris.

I once promoted an event in Burton and we had Edwin on live...siging to backing tapes, it was a cash in hand deal but i put together his play list, no Contact, no happy radio, not even sos...He did everything you ever wanted him to do, There you go, I have faith in you (acepella), scots on swingers, 24 hours to find my baby, backstreet, soul master etc etc. There were 500 in and he brought the house down... I remember following him and saying into the mike "How can i ever follow that, all I`ve got is a box of records"!! Chris

Replied mate. Chris -
Mossy, I`ve had experience of this myself recently.... I was always lead to believe that the originals were a definate blue colour and had a piano intro...they are certainly the ones i`ve been selling as originals over the last couple of years! The other pressing (I believe it to be legit) has no piano intro and it a greeny/ blue label. I have sold about 10 copies of this in the last year and i asked my source about the "green" one and he says the blue is the original. For the record there are no more copies...I have one more to list plus my own. The value according to Johns book is 100 and 30 respectively. Chris

Russ, I always thought you got it the wrong way around....bullshitting about all the records you DID`NT find when you lived in the States for 3 years with nothing else to do!! Chris
-
I Loved Edwin, Great artist and a lovely man too. I always think we took him for granted a little because he lived so close (well, about 20 miles from me) but he deserves total respect and in my opinion he is as good as anyone you care to mention when it comes to quality northern sides.....Jackie Wilson included! Record Dealers Buying Under " Dummy " Ebay Names
Chris Anderton replied to Sunnysoul's topic in All About the SOUL
I'd be very surprised if any record dealers buy huge amounts of stuff by 'over bidding collectors only bidders'. If you are buying to sell on, you need to buy cheap so that you can make a profit. There's no sense in a record dealer outbidding collectors just to then try and sell it to those very same collectors at a higher price. .............. There are many collectors who dont use ebay, or at least dont look at it in the same depth that some collectors do. Many a time I`ve been out and someone is talking to me about records on ebay as if its common knowledge and everyone has seen them. Some of us have lives too....! Chris ps, for the record my ebay name is cunningly disguised as "midastouchsoul"...bet you never figured out that was me eh? -
OK, Be gentle with me...I had/ have a copy of this but i cant find it/ had it nicked at a venue...been thru all my records and cant find it..... So...love it to bits and i want to replace it....dont care about condition, as long as it plays ok.. Anyone want to sell me a copy at a fair price? PM me...... Cheers, Chris
-
I love these old record-finding stories, even before i ever went to the States this is what i loved hearing/ reading about in fanzines etc. I have a few stories myself but i think stories fall into 2 catagories, before JMs book/ ebay and after the book and ebay...because it became a whole different ball game after the Americans got wise to it. In the new world i have a few stories i may have told before, 3x Paul Thompsons, 13 x Brown sugar (when it was hot!), 10x Kings of soul, on my last trip i found the Chandlers at 25cents!! In the old world...well, Al Williams, Johnnie mae Matthews, Johnny Maestro, Holidays, Melvin Moore etc it was much so easier back then..... Chris
