That's exactly as I read it Marc - the crowd prepared to give things a go, came with open minds and danced to whatever felt right, created a very relaxed and non-judgemental atmosphere - it was very refreshing ................... It was also noticeably a more mixed and younger crowd............ Just keep doing what you do

If his collection are like most of ours some of the records will have very distinguished features for example, faded and torn labels, writing on labels, maybe the odd click on a 45. Ask him to email a list of his missing 45s maybe i.e. let him volunteer a list and ask him to point out loads of "features" - they may help ascertain if he is being truthful.............. Also did he report the crime back then, if so he will have had an incident number and further did he claim on his insurance (if he had any).....

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?

Rarer -
Of course it might be refreshing to go for a total newbie, someone who has never played at such a venue - see how new blood fairs..........

In my view your entirely right Winnie, you gotta have an open mind to have a chance of discovering something................... I prefer to spend it reviewing 60ts and 70ts records, (and I think this is the jist of Chalky's view) but wouldn't rule out anything in terms of it having a chance - life being as it is, you gotta prioritise, but there will always be the odd one, from whatever genre and period that makes it. It was ever thus in the soul scene and shouldn't stop now (or ever)............should it ?

I bought one Ce Lo Green cd on the back of his voice sounding interesting and that further (better) tracks may lurk inside, much the same as I did when Gnarls Barkley (Crazy) popped up......... Plan B also just came to mind..........etc To me its good to try and leave the ears open and be receptive to new sounds................many don't progress and I haven't been back to either cd (as other vinyl 45s have been more productive to my tastes (of the moment)................... With regard to "funky newies" I think this was a path pioneered by Karl Heard (least in more recent times); and having heard him a couple of times and a few people there after playing such sets I'd say that the key to those sets is taking the audience with you...... A set that blends the right mix of Rare / Northern Soul with funky edged sounds can work superbly and whilst a good tune is a good tune (to the listener) regardless - a whole set of "left fielders" can leave the audience cold as they can't "hook" into it............

Dave Rimmer for me, always hits the crowd just so.............

Thanks all..........the Seller concerned followed the following pattern on a set sale item (set in 3 figures) : Seller posts set sale item : 22:29 I as Buyer pm to reserve : 22:33 Seller reads : 22:37 then stays online that night Seller online again following day 19:00 I received no reply whatsoever. Now if you don't want to sell to me fine, just pm and say I retracted my bid and won't buy again from that numpty ! Times changed for obvious reasons. All future bids, offers from me shall therefore be time stamped with retraction thereafter PS It wasn't anyone who replied........................

I have noticed more recently that Sales come up on lists and forums asking for offers and set sale and when I reply its taking longer to come back with a yes or no. I do not know if this is genuine ie they are at work etc or a stall to see if better higher offers come in, beyond the time frame stated, and is even occurring for set sale items (where it should be straightforward). If you are waiting on other opportunities it can be frustrating. What a reasonable time frame for a reply ? I am thinking of time dating offers : "This offer is open until 17:00 17/07/2011, after which its withdrawn" Anyone else put this rather "unfriendly" line in ? I should say it tends to occur with Sellers I dont know personally or haven't a trading history........... Hope have posted in right forum area...

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Raremusicdirect replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
I think so Matt.......I collect both, because to me its the only way a set can go together, mix of "oldies" and "rare"......I like both anyhow........ -

Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Raremusicdirect replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
It seems we are saying that You don't need loads of money to be an "Oldies" dj with the acknowledged big tunes because very few events are OVO- so who cares.......... ? But on the "Rare" scene where there are more OVO events and people seem to care more, you do.............. In both arenas its accepted you could put together low cost / mixed sets that would play out great.....just trying to base on the original question intent. Is that a fair summation............... ? -
Do You Have Enough Money To Be A Top Northern Soul Dj?
Raremusicdirect replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
My sentiments also. Isn't that part of the whole point of it being an Oldies set, the classics don't vary too much over time I had been thinking that there isn't much cost difference between buying a top class "Oldies" set and a top class "Rare" set on original vinyl. And by top class I am meaning what is generally, across the board accepted by dancers / djs and collectors..............a consensus ........... -
I have listed three that came to mind and the majority would be up too ........... Parisians - Twinkle Twinkle Little Star The Four Pros - Just Another Girl Mickey Champion - What Good Am I

Raremusicdirect replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Exactly, I call em "Lifers" - they can't escape the habit of collecting original vinyl (collectors or djs - and they can be one and the same)........and its not necessarily a problem at all............... I'm all for celebrating the disease I have -
