The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Raremusicdirect replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
Hi Martyn, What do you mean by new sounds in this context ? In the "old days" that I missed ; I have played some of the live tapes and it is clear that the main floor played a mix of temp and styles and releases new in that year. They seemed to worked because the new releases, at that time, had a similar feel and therefore easier mix to the current plays. I don't hear many new sounds, ie releases in 2010 and 2011, that fit into the main floors of today ; unless its a so called modern set. Happy to hear any 2010, 2011 and recent releases that people think do fit with a more traditional 60ts set. (pm away) Or did you mean "new sounds" to the mass who are on the floor enjoying generally what they know. Thanks -

The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene
Raremusicdirect replied to mrs soul's topic in All About the SOUL
I think there is a general lack of honesty with regard to rare and expensive records. If most of us had the money, we would buy the tunes we love - whatever they cost. If I won the lottery, I'd be buying all the tunes I adore across the whole range of prices. Some would cost fortunes and I would buy them because I could. For now I have to work within the budget, but I don't pretend I wouldn't buy others if I could (and importantly loved the tune) Therefore I don't feel I can speak ill of those who do pay out for the more expensive tunes - good luck to them and hope I get to hear them played out.............. -
The General State Of Our Beloved Soul Scene

Only go out to have fun and enjoy yourself Only go to venues you enjoy going to Be friends with people you enjoy being friends with If you don't enjoy yourself when out - don't go, why on earth do something in life you don't enjoy when its a choice Few of problems as I see it (generalisations of course) 1. promoters only care for themselves - not real regard for other nites that will / do clash 2. some events have as many guests / dj's / friends not paying to be there as the few who (often travel) and do pay 3. djs attend to get spots (because that's part of how it works at the moment) and give them in return if they run there own do 4. I disagree that there are too many djs - I don't think there are enough (especially given chance to play) ; I attend many events were the djs are constant as are the records they play 5. No one will write a bad review for fear of being blanked / disliked. They can say private but not public. Hence poor venues continue and drag down the good (both being half empty) 6. Events need to be clearer on music style played ie Northern Oldies, RnB and be very clear on OVO or not. Most promoters wont be because they just want numbers........I think the days of one room suits all is dead. I think the best option is a main room of (mainly oldies) and a progressive side room (carried by the main room), playing the rnb, funk tinged, gospel or for some modern etc 7. Smaller rooms (especially now when times are hard) is prob sensible, where like minds will gather, and have an atmosphere I am quiet positive that the scene will continue and evolve... I prefer the rare and underplayed niters myself, one room, dark, low ceiling, great sound system and like minded people (ideally who i like and can chat too). There are still some events around that do this for me, so I just have to seek them out............ Seek out what you like and enjoy it -
How Hard To Sell Rare 45's On Here If It's Your First Time ?
Raremusicdirect replied to Suinoz's topic in Look At Your Box
Can't see any problem, the advice provided is sound Grade Fairly Pack Well Send Promptly after payment Be clear on payment terms and payment types accepted Enclose scans and audio if you can Advise if they are set sale, open to very near offers or offers etc A good reputation is actually easier to maintain than to remove a bad one Look forward to the listings............ -

Hi Doc, Just some thoughts : Smaller Personally I prefer the small to mid sized venue as I think they can be more intense and have better atmosphere. The room size sometimes depends on numbers in though. A venue that holds 600 feels empty with 150 in, a venue that holds 150 feels empty with 30 in. Intimate clubs Yes - prefer Low ceilings Not essential - but can help - rooms do tend to get very very hot if so though No requests Requests are rare if the music policy is stated and the attendees come with that in mind. I never think a few hurt. It can bind crowds to djs more (in general) but tbh my fav djs just play things i tend to like anyway...... No music policy - Promotors choose your DJs accordingly Shouldn't they do this anyway ? Dark corners I prefer the whole room dark. Don't like too bright (appreciate fire regs etc) Comfortable seating Not essential, but better than uncomfortable. Covered smoking areas with piped music from the dance floor Why not 50 - 100 "up for it" peeps with open minds and ears Don't all clubs desire this ? Memberships Maybe...... Smaller dance floors (but never use those made up floors - ever) Good sized sprung dance floors. Avoid made up floors. One off nights in fantastic smaller venues Not sure, Regular good venues with a mix of djs, maybe guest nights Invite only No - I'd like youngsters to be able to try Lots of different DJ's playing exciting music I hear complaints that there are too many djs - but I'm not so sure - it seems to be protectionist If you want something different you will search out this night Ever the case...... If you are a DJ who wants to be inspired to play something different Some are, some are not - they need to find what works for them If you are a dancer who wants to get excited about new tunes and can dance to stuff they have never heard Some like that, some don't - If you are a listener who wants to take it all in with like minded people in comfortable surroundings Yes, great to do Think I posted on here (fairly recently) about the two crowds and two expectations..........in my view they only mix if the Main Room does Oldies and Current Biggies and the Second Room does Rare and Underplayed and whatever the flavour of the moment is be it RnB, Gospel, Funk etc.......generally the djs are different for both rooms as they think and collect the tunes differently.......(I accept some can do both)............

Thanks all that's really helped....... -
Some advice please I have seen this record listed several times and sometimes (but not all) its been mentioned that there is a production pressing fault that gives a jump at the start of the record........ Is this on all copies ? Thank you

I'd much appreciate people being named if you are 100% certain and can prove what you say............ If you don't want to go public, I'd appreciate a PM................ I'd be happy to learn from your lessons and avoid such folk.........careful as I try to be, any short cuts in avoiding such people is always appreciated.....................

Manships Auction Results ! What
Raremusicdirect replied to Ernie Andrews's topic in Look At Your Box
John, Although its another column in the guide, maybe besides listing the Mint (perfect price) the guide could show the VG price ? Whilst it can be calculated from the Mint guide, it would provide a spread of expectation, between two prices, rather than the expectation for many, being the Mint price. Once some see the headline, its hard for them to be realistic....... It could be easily be derived as a sum calculation, so no need for much work to produce. Practical ? -
Manships Auction Results ! What
Raremusicdirect replied to Ernie Andrews's topic in Look At Your Box
As a buyer I purchase every guide I can afford across a wide spectrum of music, Soul, RnB, DooWop, Funk etc I read every set sale website I can locate, follow every website auction. I spend a couple of hours a day trawling the internet watching 45s jog to their selling price.... Thankfully I receive many personal lists and read these (often playing the cd they come with). In fact although viewed as a touch old fashioned by some this method is the area I most often buy from. I can play the cds in the car (as clips granted) and if the track listing has the price its easy to make a decision........ Maybe I need to get out more lol but one things for sure, the more Information the more likely I'll make an informed decision. I tend to buy to keep (tax biils excepted), so will wait for records i rate, after all a good 45 is a good 45..... -

Original Or Re-Issue (Aka Pressings) On Ebay
Raremusicdirect replied to Chris L's topic in Look At Your Box
I emailed EvilBay many times (about 5/6 years back) suggesting they have a simple framework, a tick selection This is an Original 45 I believe this to be an Original 45, but am uncertain This is a legit 2nd issue This is a later copy or bootleg I don't know The categories were different and better thought through but you get the gist Unsurprisingly they weren't interested................ -
Every now and then a 45 comes up describes as a "private press"...........What do people take this "usually" to mean A 45 manufactured at the time of release by an individual funding it rather than a formal company or larger corporation or A later second issue (possibly legit) or A later copy (boot) Thanks
