  1. I'm on it already Dale, still got loads to cover from the Carolinas and Virginia but also adopted a slightly wider geographical remit. Still sticking very firmly with the south though (a recent road trip across Tennessee and the Carolinas inspired me !). Currently working on Bob Marshall & the Crystals, Bernard Smith & the Jokers Wild, the Astors, Tommy Ray Tucker, TSU Toronadoes, In-Men (not Bob Kuban's guys, but the NC lot on Pyramid), and loads more planned....

  7. I'm certainly no song writer or musician, but the issue over appropriate terminology ie whether something is a beat ballad or a mid tempo track does tickle me. Problem is I think there is no consensus to what constitutes 'mid-tempo' even from a technical perspective. The Oxford dictionary gives an example of the use of mid-tempo in context as 'a mid tempo ballad' ! Aargh.... Musicians of popular music have tried to define it on a BPM basis (eg 90-110 as mid-tempo, down tempo less and uptempo more) - dont know where my beat ballad faves fit into that! Maybe we should all experiment and post in - but looks like they even argue on this definition too. The only conclusion you can come to is that midtempo is relative to the specific musical genre being discussed - however when as with soul you have something like the Four Gents "I've been trying" at one end and Eskew Reeder on Crosstone at the other it all becomes a bit daft.

  14. A thread or two here already I think. I was there in April when we were on a road trip from Memphis - Nashville - Charlotte and returned there again at the end. We had a great time there. Tourist-wise, Beale Street and BB Kings is kinda obligatory, as is of course the Stax Museum / Soulsville Foundation, Sun Studios and Graceland. We stayed in a few of the hotels in the area in town and somehow came across a low key KKK rally parade right past one hotel. Lorraine Motel was closed for refurb when we were there. There is a thread somewhere on vinyl hunting on here.
