  6. Aside from records, I'm a memorabilia collector of the music industry and US civil rights. A couple of NAACP membership cards I was talking about last week over on Facebook have just arrived via Hermes, with note from Nancy Compton, the lady who sent them. I'll precis things very briefly here, but her late husband's grandmother was quite a woman: "Maggie Perry Shipman was born in 1903 in Ellaville, Georgia, before moving north to Johnstown, Pensylvania. Her grandparents were slaves in the South. I believe her activity with NAACP most likely began when the mayor attempted to banish all Blacks from Johnstown after a policeman was killed. Maggie refused to leave. She became a minister for the NAACP (the Johnstown Chapter opened in 1961), led very active life here and was well known and regarded. She was a member of Jobs Daughters, and loaned money to neighbours for those who couldn't afford to borrow from banks. She was a major role model for many in the community, but especially for my husband and her grandchildren. Maggie Shipman died May 14, 1989, age 85."

  8. This Bell Still Rings. My Life of Defiance and Song - a book by Barbara Dane (hardback version). Order via link below. "Barbara Dane is someone who is willing to follow her conscience. She is, if the term must be used, a hero."- Bob Dylan. The publisher's synopsis: The autobiography of a courageous singer-songwriter, activist, and American icon. A renowned folk, blues, and jazz singer who performed with some of the twentieth century's most celebrated musicians, from Louis Armstrong to Bob Dylan. A proud progressive who has tirelessly championed racial equality and economic justice in America, and who has traveled the world to sing out against war and tyranny. An organizer, a venue owner, a record label founder, and a woman who has charted her own creative and political path for more than ninety years. Barbara Dane has led an epic, trailblazing life in music and activism, and This Bell Still Rings tells her story in her own adventurous voice. Dane's memoir charts her trajectory from singing in union halls and at factory gates in World War II-era Detroit, to her rise as a respected blues and jazz singer, to her prominence as a folk musician frequently performing at and participating in civil rights and peace demonstrations across the US and abroad-from post-revolutionary Cuba to wartime Vietnam. This Bell Still Rings illuminates "one of the true unsung heroes of American music" (Boston Globe), and it offers a wealth of inspiration for artists, activists, and anyone seeking a life defined by courage and integrity (473 pages, hardback). Order here https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/this-bell-still-rings-my-life-of-defiance-and-song-barbara-dane
  9. Yet more original 1960s / early 70s performance contracts from the Phil Walden Artists and Promotions estate based in Macon, Georgia, and the slightly later related Paragon Agency, managed by Otis Redding's wife, Zelma Redding. All contain details on event booking dates and times, terms and conditions, artist fees etc. Each one is a truly unique piece of historical interest, and great for research - or framing in the record room! Postage £5 each. PM to enquire. UK buyers only please. 1. The Van Dykes - drawn up June 1967 for an appearance at a TBC venue in North Carolina. Within months of them recording "Save My Love for a Rainy Day". Top copy £20, two original office carbon copies £15 each. Or the package at £40. 2. Denise Laselle - Top copy and rider (will send pics of rider on enquiry) drawn up 1972 for an appearance at Club Highlander, St. Louis, Missouri. For package £20. 3. Roscoe Shelton - Top copy drawn up June 1966. £15
  10. Up for grabs: Original performance booking contracts for Mark IV, the New York group who recorded their self-titled Mercury LP in 1973 and who were also responsible for the now in-demand OTB and Cordial releases. The 4 contracts are dated 1973 and so presumably part of the plan to push their Mercury LP. All southern venues: Club Capri (Dothan, Alabama); Paladium Club (Atlanta, stamped as a cancelled booking); Peacock Lounge (Goldsboro NC) and ILA Hall (Southport, NC). Contracts also come with deposit riders attached. There are 4 separate contract packages, with each package containing top copy, plus between 1 and 4 original office carbon copies and additional rider agreements. £10 per contract package plus £5 post (UK buyers only please), or £30 all in, including postage. PM if interested.
  11. As some folks will know, as well as collecting soul music I’m a big original memorabilia fan, and buy and sell various bits of interest. Offering this artist performance contract; a real name dropper here. And a bit of a history lesson. So: this one references a 1972 ZZ Hill performance at the New Era Club (misspelled slightly on the docs) in Nashville where just about every soul, R&B and blues artist played during the 1960s and 1970s. As you’ll see from the detail it outlines terms, conditions and fees. Signed by Matt Hill (ZZ Hill’s older brother who as an aside owned MH Recs and Mesa imprints that ZZ appeared on). Matt was essentially ZZ Hill’s manager at the time. If that isn’t enough, it’s also signed by Rogers Redding for the Paragon agency - run by Zelma Redding (Otis Redding’s wife). Rogers is Otis’ brother. I could go on but the pics do the talking. Anyway I have this for sale which includes the top copy, an office carbon copy and two riders, one signed by Rogers Redding and the other also by Matt Hill. Selling as a package for £40 ONO. PM to enquire. U.K. interested parties only please on this one.

  14. I discussed the wider issue of "digital versus physical" book popularity in another article that might be of interest, which I guess echoes the preference for something tangible https://windlefreelance.com/2023/08/08/physical-to-digital-to-dust-the-future-of-books-in-our-hands/
  15. As it says on the can, a commentary on the challenges of preserving and accessing soul music history in the written word. One for all frustrated writers, researchers and bookworms! Link here: https://windlefreelance.com/2023/11/10/holding-on-to-the-past-the-challenge-of-preserving-and-accessing-soul-music-history-in-the-written-word/
  16. Songwriter / producer Bob Johnson might well have written, or at least co-written, this one. In fact, he could have written a number of songs which were credited to his wife Joy Byers, including some on Elvis, Timi Yuro and others. Bob was freelancing for Dot in the early 60s, and the Rodge Martin version was first. Problem is Joy was a songwriter too. Bob and Joy are both no longer with us now so relative contributions will always remain a mystery. I tried to clarify things with Mac Gayden a while back but these Nashville cats stick together! As an aside, you listen to other Byers-credited compositions like Freddie North / Jimmy Church / BB King's The Hurt, or Rodge Martin or Susan Rewis' They Say etc, or Timi Yuro's What's a Matter Baby, or Elvis' Let Yourself Go etc. there are structural similarities to greater or lesser degrees. All great songwriting regardless. Another random bit of info - I'm pals with Nat Speir, founder of the (Carolina) Rivieras - around 1963/64 he was involved in a series of sessions in New York to play on some of the Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs recordings for Herald. As it's the same time and label as the Jimmy Parker, I'll ask if he remembers him at all. The Jimmy Parker version is best left alone of course, but in the scheme of things it is at least historically relevant. Bob Johnson also ended up head of Columbia's Nashville operations, so no surprise the song was recycled (yet again) for Susan Rewis.
  17. Congratulations Steve. As I've said elsewhere, anyone who has Scepter Wand Forever will know how heavily researched this one will be. Spreading the news, and can't wait to read it.
  18. UPDATE - SORTED THANKS. NOW IN TOUCH. Wondering if anyone knows if Nigel Brant is on here, or if not, if anybody knows him and is currently in contact with him? If so please contact me via PM. Cheers in advance, Mark Windle.

  24. Pomus and Shuman. Hitmakers, Together and Apart - a book by Graham Vickers (Hardback format). In stock at A Nickel And A Nail (limited supply only). The blurb: A joint biography of one of popular music's greatest song writing teams, exploring the private lives and public triumphs of lyricist Doc Pomus and composer Mort Shuman. The blurb: Between 1958 and 1965, usually working out of Manhattan's famous Brill Building, they wrote some 500 teen anthems and timeless ballads for Ray Charles, The Drifters, Bobby Darin, and Del Shannon among others. Polio-stricken ex-blues shouter Pomus always attracted the press coverage, but after the duo split junior partner Shuman proved perhaps the more publicly colourful, acting in films, writing musicals, joining the post-Beatles British beat boom and eventually becoming a chart-topping singer-composer in his own right. The story of Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, writing together and individually, reveals a personal dynamic that was both warm and difficult but which at its height produced songs like Save The Last Dance For Me, This Magic Moment and Lonely Avenue (Hardback, 160 pages). 25. One of my best selling books from the store over the last year or so, and more now back in stock. All copies signed by Abdul Fakir himself. "I'll Be There: My Life With The Four Tops" - Duke Fakir with Kathleen McGhee-Anderson (Hardback version). The blurb: Spanning over decades, this is the remarkable, heartfelt memoir from Abdul ‘Duke’ Fakir, the last surviving member of The Four Tops. Amidst a backdrop of Detroit, I’ll Be There features revealing anecdotes from the group’s formation, their early days as backup singers for the likes of Jackie Wilson, and their years working with Berry Gordy at the legendary Motown Records. With era-defining number ones like ‘I Can’t Help Myself (Sugar Pie Honey Bunch)’ and ‘Reach Out I’ll Be There’ came stardom and also a more enduring reward: the love of four men who become tighter than brothers. Together they comprise one of the most celebrated R&B groups of all time. But remarkable musical success didn’t spare Fakir the pain of marital distress, soured investment deals, struggles with sobriety and the sudden loss of his brothers, all of which he covers in this confessional, unmissable book (hardback, 240 pages). Order via link https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/ill-be-there-my-life-with-the-four-tops-duke-fakir-with-kathleen-mcghee-anderson-limited-signed-edition
