  2. A call out to all self publishing writers of soul and related works. The independent online soul and R&B specialist bookstore "A Nickel And A Nail" will be opening 5 August 2016. Part of the objective, as well as catering for the specific literary needs of genre fans, is to exist as a platform for (quality) self publications for sale and reviews. We will be interested in historical reference and 'scene' related works. Any interested writers please pm me for more details. Thanks, Mark.
  3. Hi John, sent a message to your email address (not pm) re bulk order
  4. Avons - Push a little harder - Groove I need the picture cover only, but will take it the 45 with it if need be. Please pm price and condition of cover. Or if anyone has one but doesnt want to sell still get in touch, cheers. PS dont need an internet trawl scan thanks. Thanks, Mark.
  5. With Nashvilles' long history of live black entertainment since the 40s (and even earlier) and R&B, the city had a potential to compete with some of the cities of the north with respect to the development of soul music in the 60s. A soul explosion of sorts did happen of course, but was stunted. Not only because of the 'Country machine', but also to massive urban renewal projects which started in the late 50s and contuinued through the late 60s / early 70s. The city planners essentially bulldozed most of the black community areas including housing, clubs and bars along Jefferson Street and other areas to tidy the city up, but actually ended up with disproportionate building of new housing projects versus folk who were actually displaced. This process fragmented the black community, left hundreds of families homeless, and in a musical context, artists no longer had a focal place to demonstrate their talents, practice their craft or be scouted. Just working on presenting the whole Nashville soul story weaving in a collection of around 15-20 biographies at the mo, should hopefully be finished end of this year / early next.
  6. Please PM condition and price cheers.
  7. Thanks for the update Dave. Indispensible resource I use all the time. Keep up the good work!
  8. The Greater Experience guitarist sent me this....
  9. No. Archie and Pat probably the easiest to find on it, or was at one point. Re Ascots. Sold mine for about £600-700 I think probably 4-5 years ago. Just doesnt turn up that often then gets snapped up. "Anytime" is just as good, if not even better. Depends what kind of mood you're in.
  10. For anyone interested in biographies of lesser known southern soul artists of northern soul interest....includes The Passions, Troy Marrs, Gene and the Team Beats, Lost Soul, Lee Tillman, Bernard Smith and the Jokers Wild, Bob Marshall and the Crystals, Tommy Ray Tucker, The Showmen, Merle Spears and loads more... https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/5936116-rhythm-message Or contact me direct, Cheers, Mark.
  11. Avons - Push a little harder - Groove Must come with the picture cover - in fact I only need the picture cover! But will take both. PM me price condition etc. Ideally UK / European seller. Cheers.
  12. Story goes Fred Foster secured the Ebony master as a lease in from their manager Juanita Henson, and had intended it for his new Showcase label, but an agreement with Henson and Foster meant it ended up being re-recorded at Nashville using established and respected Monument musicians (Bill Justis, Boots Randolph etc). Showcase 'became' Sound Stage 7 as a result of some kind of label registration problem I believe.
  13. A truly enjoyable read Chalky. You refer to this as a brief overview - I say much more than that. Comprehensive documentation of this particular era of northern soul history has been a long time coming. Really appreciate all your hard work here. Thanks for taking the time to pull this together.
  14. Cheers, but it's specifically the actual picture cover I'm after (more than the record even).
  15. The Avons - Push a little harder (Groove). Easy one. Not fussed about condition BUT must come with the picture cover, and cover must be in fine condition, no writing etc. PM me with details and a price. Thanks, Mark.
  16. But they were (and some still are) musicians. Nelson Lemmond (drums), Roger Branch (guitar), Mike Branch (keyboard), Van Coble (bass guitar), Tom Brawley (flute & baritone saxophone), Gerald Schrum (tenor saxophone), Rick White (tenor saxophone), Ronnie Smith and Jim Butt (trumpet). At other points in The Tempests’ life, Ray Alexander, Bill McPhearson and Eddie Grimes all played trumpet. These guys were the mid 60s line up; in the early 60's nearly a completely different line up bar the Branch brothers again all musicians, who were actually called the Tempests Band, (who backed up Mike Williams on a couple of Atlantic 45s).
  17. Folk might be interested in this for a Crimbo present.......https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/5573053-soul-reflections I must have 200+ of the suckers, started as a novelty side line and got a bit obsessive. My book contains a load of these plus some nice contributions from Craig Butler.
  18. I concur, really fantastic looking comp.
  19. Dave Farrell might have Chalky?
  20. This one didn't quite make "Rhythm Message" as I didn't have enough space to include it. Letter sent from Bob Hope to Troy Marrs when they both appeared at a benefit concert in Texas, mid 1970s...
  21. Really informative piece and resource- cheers for posting Boxy.
  22. Nope Alan, there's no significance unless it relates only specifically to that 45, though I don't think its been booted. There's no legal reissue to my knowledge. The first 'plain' Sound Stage 7 logo (plain red / white if demo) ran 63 to late 64 / early 65ish, and the 7 appeared as a raised thin 7, or a thicker block font type 7 more in line with text. Neither format suspicious.
  23. There's these two, on southern soul with a northern twist... https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/5936116-rhythm-messagehttps://www.blurb.co.uk/b/5936116-rhythm-message https://www.blurb.co.uk/b/4222235-it-s-better-to-cry-colour-version
  24. Also got this local pre-ABC copy of Nova's Nine's 'Pain / Why listen', signed by member and writer Brian Mann at the time they released it
  25. Posted this up before, a little present they sent me for pulling their story together for 'It's Better to Cry'.....
