  3. More from HOBH: “In July or August 1965, Billy Cox presented two of his own compositions, “I’m So Glad” and “I’m Sorry For You” to Frank Howard. Bill Allen was producing that session at Starday King studios on Dickerson Road. Jimi Hendrix was in the studio; Billy Cox previously commented that after Jimi Hendrix had left Little Richard’s band, he moved constantly backwards and forwards to Nashville, picking up odd jobs, before departing to join the Isley Brothers in New York. Other musicians on the session included Cox on bass, drummer Freeman Brown and a horn section led by Harrison Callaway. Allen just wanted Jimi to play a basic rhythm. Hendrix had a compulsion to express himself musically even at this stage, and demonstrated this in the session. Hoss didn’t think this was appropriate so turned his mic down on the session and “cut him in and out”. The record was ultimately released in 1966 on Barry, an Old Town subsidiary label (Barry 1008)”
  4. He was also on Frank Howard and the Commanders “I’m so glad”.
  5. There's a pretty neat photo of Jimi at a table in a club, possibly on Jefferson Street, with individuals associated with the Southern City label (Paramount Four etc) which appears in the book, previously unseen.
  6. Some more original soul related music industry memorabilia from the 60s to early 70s. Soul / R&B artists performance contracts are currently being offered for sale at A Nickel And A Nail. This is your chance to own some unique pieces of history in a set-sale. Updates and additions made daily! To see the full memorabilia sales section with sample images and prices go to https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/memorabilia This weekend's sales additions are listed below. If interested in purchasing order direct via the website or PM me here: Jimmy Hughes - 1966 performance contract (Columbus, Georgia) From the Walden Artists and Promotions estate. Performance booking contract for an April 1966 appearance at the Municipal Auditorium in Columbus, Georgia. Outlines the artist fees, deposit, terms and conditions, and rehearsal times. The contract represents the time when Jimmy Hughes was under Rick Hall at Muscle Shoals, and one month prior to the release of "Neighbor, neighbor" on Hall's FAME label, which reached #4 in the R&B charts. This contract is in very good condition, with no tears, defacement or creases. A well preserved item. Bettye Swann - 1973 performance contract (New Starlite Club, Selfin, Florida). From the Walden Artists and Promotions / Paragon Agency estate. Performance booking contract for Bettye Swann, for a June 1973 appearance at the New Starlite Club, Selfin, Florida. Outlines the artist fees, deposit, terms and conditions. The contract represents the time when she recorded for Atlantic, and also around the time when her Money 45s were picked up by Nashville's Abet for re-release. This package contains the original top copy, two office carbon copies, three riders for deposit, and all pages signed by the artist. Condition is good for age, with no tears or defacement. Some creasing / water damage is present on one copy (as shown) and on the last rider, but does not distract from the integrity / readability of the documents as a whole. Willie Hightower - performance contract (Redstone Club, Huntsville, Alabama). From the Waldon Artists and Promotions / Paragon Agency estate. An original performance booking contract (AGVA #BC33881) for an appearance by Willie Hightower at the Redstone Arsenal NCO Club, Huntsville, Alabama. Performance date September 1972. Details of venue location, rehearsal and show times, fees, terms and conditions, and deposit requirements are referenced. Contract is signed by Willie Hightower. The package is in very good condition and contains the original contract, three office carbon copies, and three deposit riders. Of interest, the original allocated artist assigned to this contract number was Mary Wells, but has been replaced (as shown in image) by Willie Hightower. Other material from the estate suggests that this was due to a cancellation of availability by Mary Wells' management rather than a date change.
