WILLIE HIGHTOWER - ORIGINAL PERFORMANCE CONTRACT (Redstone Club, Huntsville, Alabama). ***£19.99 order via link*** From the Waldon Artists and Promotions / Paragon Agency estate. An original performance booking contract (AGVA #BC33881) for an appearance by Willie Hightower at the Redstone Arsenal NCO Club, Huntsville, Alabama. Performance date September 1972. Details of venue location, rehearsal and show times, fees, terms and conditions, and deposit requirements are referenced. Contract is signed by Willie Hightower. The package is in very good condition and contains the original contract, three office carbon copies, and three deposit riders. Of interest, the original allocated artist assigned to this contract number was Mary Wells, but has been replaced (as shown in image) by Willie Hightower. Other material from the estate suggests that this was due to a cancellation of availability by Mary Wells' management rather than a date change etc. Images and details at link below: https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/memorabilia/products/willie-hightower-original-performance-contract-redstone-club-huntsville-alabama

Back in stock due to popular demand... SCEPTER WAND FOREVER! - a book by Steve Guarnori ***£29.99 in stock. Order via link below*** A genuinely essential and comprehensive reference book for any serious collector of R&B and soul music. Steve Guarnori traces the history of the first US label to be run by a female: Scepter Records and its subsidiary labels. The story details the growth of Scepter in the 1960s in New York with signings like Dionne Warwick, B.J. Thomas and a host of others, through the early days of disco music in the 1970s, and to the company's eventual demise in 1976. This book features the stories of the artists, and the people involved in the company, including a heavy focus on soul and R&B output. Scepter's success with acts like The Shirelles, Dionne Warwick, B.J. Thomas, B.T. Express, The Kingsmen and others was mirrored by many more non-sellers and flops. The book explores the hits and the misses, the labels that were distributed by Scepter, the artists, and the company’s story. Including comments from many of the people involved with the label over its existence (1.6kg, large format illustrated, 502 pages). Slightly off topic, and probably confuses things even more, but I had a conversation with Philly expert Dave Moore earlier in the year, when I was trying to ascertain whether the Benn X Inspirations were the same as the Wand (Philly) Inspirations. The Wand Inspirations backed the Volcanos on some of their Artic recordings. I’ve heard 3 different Inspirations tracks originating from NJ / Philly each with different leads / vocal delivery -falsetto group, tenor and baritone leads so they either had a quick turnover in members, or the name applied to random groups, over the space of 10 years or so. Then there’s a 50s / early doowop thing on Jamie (Philly label). Dave's opinion was essentially that the Wand Inspirations were likely same as the guys on the Virtue acetate of 'Put Another Dime' but was not so sure they were actually The Rotations on the Frantic 45. When he questioned the Harthon guys they couldn't throw any light on the difference between The Inspirations and The Rotations. Dave Moore (or Dave Brown in Philly) can probably clarify the score here better than I. The Benn X recording sounds very late 60s at the earliest so if the Wand Inspirations and Rotations were the same group, why would they revert back to their original name for a later recording?
-
Definitely not the same Inspirations as those on Midas. There was 3-4 different R&B/soul groups by the same name in the 60s. West coast, New York, Midas ones and 1 (possibly 2) from Philly / NJ I think.
