  6. House of Broken Hearts. The Soul of 1960s Nashville A book by E. Mark Windle. BACK IN STOCK!! The Northern Soul of a Southern City… Nashville may forever be associated with country music but there is another story to the city’s past. In the 1960s an exciting, vibrant black music scene thrived in the night clubs and bars along Jefferson Street and in surrounding neighbourhoods. Ingredients for commercial success were also in place – charismatic DJs and promoters, entrepreneurial record store and label owners, a radio station making hip soul music accessible to teenagers across the southern states and TV shows which featured local R&B acts. It was even the time for white artists and musicians to experiment; a crossroads where soul met country. For a brief period at least, it appeared that Nashville was about to forge a reputation comparable to that of Detroit, Chicago and other cities of the north. Through interview and in-depth research this book presents the histories of Frank Howard and the Commanders, Peggy Gaines, Herbert Hunter, Jimmy Church, The Avons, Sandra King, Johnny Jones and the King Kasuals, The Hytones, The Spidells and many more. Part pioneer and part follower of fashion, Music City is long overdue recognition for its role in popularising soul music. Author E. Mark Windle continues his quest to uncover the stories of artists whose recordings are now the stuff of legend on the UK and European underground soul scenes. House of Broken Hearts is an essential reference source for fans of the genre and indeed anyone wishing to explore an alternative version of Nashville’s rich musical history. Book specifications: Reference / biographical collection. Paperback.180 pages, 100+ B&W images. Dimensions 9" x 6". 11. It Ain't Retro. Daptone Records and the 21st Century Soul Revolution - a new book by Jessica Lipsky. ***Order via link below*** “All Sharon Jones ever wanted was recognition—not only for herself but for the whole Daptone family and the soul scene. We proved that soul never died, and It Ain’t Retro is a solid chronicle of our collective effort.” (Binky Griptite). With a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, Daptone, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley, while providing sonic support for the likes of Amy Winehouse. Daptone’s records pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. This definitive tale of Daptone Records’ soulful revolution chronicles the label’s history, players, and sounds, while dissecting the related scene’s cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. Jessica Lipsky is a journalist and DJ from Brooklyn by way of the San Francisco Bay. She first encountered sweet soul music as a child by obsessively tuning her radio dial and has since extensively covered soul, funk, reggae, and alternative Latin music. Her work on the intersection of culture, music, and politics has appeared in the New York Times, NPR, Billboard, The Recording Academy, Columbia Journalism Review, Vice, Newsweek, Wax Poetics, and LA Weekly. In her free time, she likes to boogaloo down Broadway (paperback, new), 275 pages, colour images). 19. Chips Moman. The Record Producer Whose Genius Changed American Music - A book by James L.Dickerson. Available at A Nickel And A Nail order via link below: https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/chips-moman-the-record-producer-whose-genius-changed-american-music-james-l-dickerson The blurb: Chips Moman's genius began in the studio, where he instituted technical innovations that forever changed the recording industry, but it expanded from there with an uncanny ability to recognize hit songs when he heard them as rough demos. Moman often goes under recognised in his contributory role in the very early days of Stax before co-founding American Sound Studio, and carving himself an impressive production and songwriting career that blossomed with an unsurpassed string of hit R&B, soul, pop and rock records, rescuing Elvis Presley's career with his recordings of "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto". Not bad for a Georgia country boy who dropped out of school in the eighth grade and hitchhiked to Memphis in search of the American Dream (Paperback, 348 pages, illustrated).

  22. STOCK JUST LANDED AT A NICKEL AND A NAIL! Love Factory: The History of Holland Dozier Holland - the new book by Howard Priestley. Details / order direct via link: https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/love-factory-the-history-of-holland-dozier-holland-howard-priestley It has long been acknowledged that Berry Gordy Jr and his Motown Empire put Detroit on the International musical map but it was the creative genius of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland who would take the sound into uncharted territory. In this book author Howard Priestley explores in depth the story of the three friends, their meteoric rise to fame and their fall from the heights. Forty years in the making, Priestley's love affair with the work of H-D-H started with his art thesis (so, well illustrated for a start!). The focus of this book is as much on their Invictus and Hotwax story as Motown, and is peppered with interviews with the likes of Steve Mancha, Chairmen of the Board, Melvin Davis and Eddie Holland himself (softback, illustrated, new, 236 pages).
