FOR SALE Willie Hightower - original performance contract (Redstone Club, Huntsville, Alabama). ***A chance to own another unique piece of soul music history. PM to secure*** From the Waldon Artists and Promotions / Paragon Agency estate. An original performance booking contract (AGVA no. BC33881) for an appearance by Willie Hightower at the Redstone Arsenal NCO Club, Huntsville, Alabama. Performance date September 1972. Details of venue location, rehearsal and show times, fees, terms and conditions, and deposit requirements are referenced. Contract is signed by Willie Hightower. The package is in very good condition and contains the original contract, three office carbon copies, and three deposit riders. Of particular interest, the original allocated artist assigned to this contract number was Mary Wells, but has been replaced (as shown in image) by Willie Hightower. Other material from the estate suggests that this was due to a cancellation of availability by Mary Wells' management. Looking at £20 plus UK post. PM to reserve.

It Ain't Retro. Daptone Records and the 21st Century Soul Revolution - a book by Jessica Lipsky. ***£14.99 order via link below*** “All Sharon Jones ever wanted was recognition—not only for herself but for the whole Daptone family and the soul scene. We proved that soul never died, and It Ain’t Retro is a solid chronicle of our collective effort.” (Binky Griptite). With a collective of soul-obsessed producers and musicians, Daptone, the Brooklyn-based independent label launched the careers of artists such as Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings and Charles Bradley, while providing sonic support for the likes of Amy Winehouse. Daptone’s records pay homage but never lip service to the original artists, proving that soul is still culturally relevant, and just as exciting as ever. This definitive tale of Daptone Records’ soulful revolution chronicles the label’s history, players, and sounds, while dissecting the related scene’s cultural underpinnings, which continue to reverberate in pop music. The book also contains rare and unseen images of Daptone artists past and present, including Sharon Jones, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, Antibalas, The Sugarman 3, The Budos Band, and more. Jessica Lipsky is a journalist and DJ from Brooklyn by way of the San Francisco Bay. She first encountered sweet soul music as a child by obsessively tuning her radio dial and has since extensively covered soul, funk, reggae, and alternative Latin music. Her work on the intersection of culture, music, and politics has appeared in the New York Times, NPR, Billboard, The Recording Academy, Columbia Journalism Review, Vice, Newsweek, Wax Poetics, and LA Weekly. In her free time, she likes to boogaloo down Broadway (paperback, new, 275 pages, colour images). BACK IN STOCK! More stock just landed of the brand new hardback book "1975: A Year in the Life of Northern Soul" by Tim Brown. Follow link below for blurb and ordering. In the author's words: The first ever detailed look at one specific year in the history of Northern Soul focuses on its most important one. It was the year when seventies soul was embraced to sit alongside traditional sixties stompers in all dancehalls and venues such as Cleethorpes Pier and The Ritz, Manchester, as all-dayers took a hold on the scene. Wigan Casino and the Blackpool Mecca remained as twin towers of the nightlife, however. Television, radio, and newspapers were fascinated by the ultimate underground music scene and this book analyses their interest. Tim Brown, author of "The Wigan Casino Years", details the events, stories and discoveries as they unfolded, many of which are recounted for the first time. A definitive account of a year in the life of Northern Soul, richly illustrated in full gloss colour (hardback, new, 208 pages). Order at A Nickel And A Nail via link: https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/1975-a-year-in-the-life-of-northern-soul-tim-brown

The Tempests (pt 14): A Subculture Rediscovery
Windlesoul replied to Windlesoul's topic in All About the SOUL
They are from the book The Tempests: A Carolina Soul Story, though a few individual online chapters were modified slightly to explore some themes etc. If you are interested in the book and getting the whole story in one place, I do have the paperback available at https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books?page=3 and there will be a PDF version available soon (possibly later next week). Late update: paperback is sold out now, but the ebook is available at https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/the-tempests-a-carolina-soul-story-e-mark-windle -
Hardback copy available of the out of print Al Abrams’ book Hype and Soul. Now then, these will set you back £70 or thereabouts on Amazon, which as usual is ridiculous, but just try finding a copy anywhere else. Anyway my one is a very decent copy, only very slight wear to the dust jacket. £30 inc U.K. post. PM to reserve this copy.

Rhythm Message - a book by E. Mark Windle. ***Now available via link below*** A biographical collection of lesser known 1960s southern soul recording artists... The blurb: Biographers of 1960s southern soul music traditionally concern themselves with the popular songs and singers associated with Stax, FAME and Atlantic. However there are a myriad of lesser known artists whose histories until now have not been fully documented. Some acts were well received regionally but failed to break out at a national level. Others had talent but passed relatively unnoticed due to under-financed labels, poor promotion or uncredited work. Quality soul music also surfaced via custom recordings which by their nature featured very low pressing runs. These artists were an integral part of the creative fabric and local culture of the time. Many of their musical contributions have received rightful recognition on the rare soul scenes in the UK and Europe. In this follow up to It's Better To Cry, the author continues his search for artists, relatives, label owners and key players linked with these recordings. Their stories now provide a permanent document of an important facet of southern soul and R&B history, which may otherwise have been lost forever. Artists from the Carolinas, Virginia, Texas and Louisiana are discussed in this biographical collection, including: the Showmen, the Passions, Troy Marrs and the Dynamics, T.S.U. Toronadoes, Merle Spears, Lee Tillman, The Astors, Sam and Bill, the Elvitrue Passions, Bob Marshall and the Crystals, Bernard Smith and the Jokers Wild, Lost Soul and many more (e-book / PDF format).
