  1. Soul In Print. A History of Soul Music Fanzines and Magazines - book by Iain McCartney Order via link below The blurb: Soul music remains the biggest 'underground' music scene in the world with each weekend, pre-Covid19, seeing countless soul nights and weekenders fill the diaries. Records, on often obscure labels, change hands regularly for four figure sums. But for many to learn about those 'four-figure' tracks and those who recorded them, they have had to rely on countless diehards on the scene. Those who seek out details of an artist's career and compile discographies of the labels on which they recorded and then take the time to put it all into print in the form of a fanzine, or if finances allow, a fully-fledged magazine. Some of those publications failed to last beyond one issue, others longer. There have been books about the artists, the record labels and the venues. Now 'Soul In Print' fills a gap, covering the fanzines and magazines which did so much to keep the scene alive and maintain the interest which continues today (large format colour and B&W illustrated, 186 pages). 3. The Tempests: A Carolina Soul Story - a book by E. Mark Windle. ***NOW AVAILABLE AS AN E-BOOK Order via link below*** The blurb: In the mid-1960s, North Carolina was feverishly embracing the soul explosion. From emerging local R&B acts came The Tempests, a racially integrated band which stood out from the rest. Featuring an African-American lead singer with a commanding vocal presence and talented white musicians from a range of backgrounds, their powerful soulful delivery and tight rhythm and horn sections could not be ignored. The Tempests attracted the attention of the music industry through energetic on-stage performances and quality studio work. They would soon become a booking agent’s go-to for sharing the billing with national soul stars on tour in the south east. Part heavily researched narrative and part first-hand oral history, The Tempests: A Carolina Soul Story explores how soul music took hold in the Carolinas, the origins and influences of the band, their recording period with two major labels, hectic touring schedules, and the inevitable split. But that’s only half the tale. Those early experiences shaped careers in song-writing, studio production and musicianship in popular music which continue to influence others to this day. Then there is the latter-day rediscovery of the Smash-Mercury recordings by a UK underground soul scene and formal recognition of The Tempests’ contribution to soul music following induction into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame. This book continues the series in which the author presents biographies of regional artists and bands who contributed to the southern soul music phenomenon of the 1960s (ebook: 168 pages, approx. 80 colour illustrations). 7. Chips Moman. The Record Producer Whose Genius Changed American Music - a book by James L.Dickerson. ***Order via link below*** The blurb: Chips Moman's genius began in the studio, where he instituted technical innovations that forever changed the recording industry, but it expanded from there with an uncanny ability to recognize hit songs when he heard them as rough demos. Moman often goes under recognised in his contributory role in the very early days of Stax before co-founding American Sound Studio, and carving himself an impressive production and songwriting career that blossomed with an unsurpassed string of hit R&B, soul, pop and rock records, rescuing Elvis Presley's career with his recordings of "Suspicious Minds" and "In the Ghetto". Not bad for a Georgia country boy who dropped out of school in the eighth grade and hitchhiked to Memphis in search of the American Dream (Paperback, 348 pages, illustrated). 8. House of Broken Hearts: The Soul of 1960s Nashville (INSTANT PDF DIGITAL AND PAPERBACK VERSIONS) - a book by E. Mark Windle ***Available via A Nickel And A Nail ebook £4.99, paperback £14.99 - order via link below*** The Northern Soul of a Southern City…Nashville may forever be associated with country music but there is another story to the city’s past. In the 1960s an exciting, vibrant black music scene thrived in the night clubs and bars along Jefferson Street and in surrounding neighbourhoods. Ingredients for commercial success were also in place – charismatic DJs and promoters, entrepreneurial record store and label owners, a radio station making hip soul music accessible to teenagers across the southern states and TV shows which featured local R&B acts. It was even the time for white artists and musicians to experiment; a crossroads where soul met country. For a brief period at least, it appeared that Nashville was about to forge a reputation comparable to that of Detroit, Chicago and other cities of the north. Part pioneer and part follower of fashion, Music City is long overdue recognition for its role in popularising soul music. Author E. Mark Windle continues his quest to uncover the stories of artists whose recordings are now the stuff of legend on the UK and European underground soul scenes. House of Broken Hearts is an essential reference source for fans of the genre and indeed anyone wishing to explore an alternative version of Nashville’s rich musical history. Book specifications: PDF DIGITAL FORMAT and PAPERBACK. Reference / biographical collection. 180 pages, 100+ colour images. 16. Anybody know if the early Popcorn scene's been documented (fully)? There's a book in there for sure. And those images in the clip are just superb. There is a short documentary style video also somewhere. I see what Ady says about his experience of it being less of a working class scene than NS, I also get it from other comments in other areas it was pretty mixed. Thanks for sharing Chris, is Gilbert Govaert still around?
