Hey America! The Epic Story of Black Music and the White House (HARDBACK PRE-ORDER) - a new book by Stuart Cosgrove. ***Pre-order via link*** https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/hey-america-the-epic-story-of-black-music-and-the-white-house-hardback-stuart-cosgrove RELEASE DATE 4 AUGUST 2022. From Penderyn Music Book Prize winner Stuart Cosgrove, Hey, America! is the story of how black music came from the margins of American life in the early twentieth century through to the mainstream under Barack Obama’s presidency and then was mobilised as a force for radical opposition to Donald Trump’s presidency. Embedded in the story is the triumph of black music over the many forces that had held it back – racism, segregation, undercapitalised record labels, media discrimination and political anxiety. Opening with President Obama’s tribute to Prince, Stuart Cosgrove takes us through the spat between Louis Armstrong and President Eisenhower, Eartha Kitt’s encounter with Lady Bird Johnson, the Vietnam War’s influence on soul, James Brown’s flirtation with Nixon, the impact of Hurricane Katrina, Ice-T’s ‘Cop Killer’ scandal, Public Enemy and the rise of hip-hop, the Washington Wives versus ‘porn rock’, and many, many others. The book concludes with the dramatic stand-off between Trump and the Black Lives Matter movement (368 pages, hardback, 800g, new).

Happy World Music Day / Fete de la Musique! To celebrate all our music related books are post free today! Quote WORLDMUSICDAY2022 at checkout! Like this.... Dreams To Remember: Otis Redding, Stax Records and the Transformation of Southern Soul (hardback format) - by Mark Ribowsky. ***Order via link here*** https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/dreams-to-remember-otis-redding-stax-records-and-the-transformation-of-southern-soul-mark-ribowsky Back cover blurb: When he died in one of rock's string of tragic plane crashes, Otis Redding was only twenty-six. The beating heart of Memphis-based Stax Records, he had risen to fame belting out gospel-flecked blues in stage performances that seemed to ignite not only a room but an entire generation. If Berry Gordy's black-owned kingdom in Motown showed the way in soul music, Redding made his own way, going where not even his two role models who had preceded him out of Macon, Georgia—Little Richard and James Brown—had gone. New York Times Notable Book author Mark Ribowsky contextualizes his subject's short career within the larger cultural and social movements of the era, tracing the rise from preacher's son to a preacher of three-minute soul sermons. Soon he was playing at sold-out venues across the world, from Finsbury Park in London to his ultimate conquest, the 1967 Monterrey Pop Festival in California. Redding was not always the affable, big-hearted man's man the PR material painted him to be. Based on numerous new interviews and prodigious research, Dreams to Remember reintroduces an incredibly talented yet impulsive man, while that temperament masked a deep vulnerability that was only exacerbated by an industry that refused him a Grammy until he was in his grave—even as he shaped the other Stax soul men around him. This requiem is one of great conquest but also grand tragedy: a soul king of truth, a mortal man with an immortal voice and a pain in his heart. Now he, and the forces that shaped his incomparable sound, are reclaimed, giving us a panoramic of an American original who would come to define an entire era, yet only wanted what all men deserve—a modicum of respect and a place to watch the ships roll in and away again (hardback book, 336 pages).

That would be the ideal scenario, but a complete revision from an (author and) editorial perspective would be a mammoth undertaking and likely take years. -
New Ebook - The Heeey Baby Days Of Beach Music

I was discussing this with Chris Jones a couple of nights ago who was involved in the converting the book, about options to make it more accessible to overseas (ie a straight digital download as you mentioned). There are a few issues around the size of the file for digital selling on platforms and one or two other issues. I suggested a couple of options and they are keen to work through the tech / logistics. In the meantime as you say it does mean more people should hopefully be able to access what is a fantastic reference book and won't take up the whole of people's shelf space as my daughter demonstrated a few years ago! -
The Rise and Fall of EMI Records - a book by Brian Southall. ***IN STOCK. Order via link*** https://a-nickel-and-a-nail.myshopify.com/collections/books/products/the-rise-and-fall-of-emi-records-brian-southall Electric and Music Industries Ltd (EMI) first saw the light of day in the UK in 1931. In a visionary move for the gramophone age, it was a manufacturer of recording and playback equipment, records and tapes. For over half a century, EMI dominated these sectors, its music division eventually becoming the most successful in the world with a roster that at various times included some of the globe's most famous artists. Then in the 1990s, things started to go wrong... This book is the continuing saga of one of Britain's largest music companies as it faces an uncertain future under new ownership. EMI has broken new acts and sold millions of records but the massive debts incurred by its owners Terra Firma have finally taken it to the brink of a break-up. Music industry experts and executives, financiers and commentators plus artists' managers assess EMI's fortunes as the company celebrates its 80th birthday. Brian Southall pulls this analysis together via interviews with many key players including former EMI Group/EMI Music executives, music managers and journalists, financial analysts and rival record company heads (paperback, 340 pages).
