So Who Was The First White Act 'signed' To Motown
Windlesoul replied to Spacehopper's topic in All About the SOUL
Valadiers? -
The beach scene has always interested me in a curious way, particularly the 60's soul factor. Some have said the soul aspect generally bears no resemblance to the northern scene but maybe depends on the perspective of the narrator or the observer, a bit like the musical perception of an outsider to northern i.e. assuming the stereotype. I agree that some stuff is lightweight / poppy / cheesy (I got a fever, okaysions etc) - presumably what the beach masses are / were after - but again that's only my perception what intrigues me is the more obscure stuff, and the more obscure garage bands or harder releases from known local bands who took the soul slant. I'm curious to know whether a local 'sub-scene' exists for this kind of thing now or in the past? A local Carolina collectors scene or just the domain of DJs?

Tommy Tate - If I Gave You My Heart - Sundance (Stone Mint)
Windlesoul replied to Dave Thorley's topic in Record Sales
Agree too! Don't really collect post 60's these days but could never really understand why this side didn't get more exposure than the flip back in the 80's, was always a bit uncomfortable with the tempo on 'What....' if you know what I mean, but 'If I gave you my heart' is just fab! Correct me if I'm wrong, Dave but was this not an 80's release rather than 70's? I know this / the flip / both came out on UK Move in the 80's (I remember buying a copy from the label office in Edinburgh) and ? Soulbowl pushing the Sundance one in quantity in the 80's Mark -
Whilst we're going international with the releases, got a French Pye one with piccy sleeve if anybody's interested! Flip is fab

Bob Meyer - I Only Get That Feeling - Going Rate?
Windlesoul replied to Windlesoul's topic in Look At Your Box
Let the fighting commence..... -
Think Anglo American are deeply regretting the price cock-up on this a few days ago, think I was about one of a zillion people who tried to snaffle it! I'm maybe one of the few who is not actually keen on the Chuck J version but prefer Bob's for its balls (and nowt to do with it just being rarer before you start), even if it does admittedly lose a bit of steam later on. Anyways, what's the consensus on the 'real' going rate on this ? Popsike is all over the place. And of course if anyones got one to part with it'd be a welcome addition to my Carolina corner.....

Barbara Acklin-Am I The Same Girl-Mca British
Windlesoul replied to arnie j's topic in Look At Your Box
Joss Stone (uses the Young / Holt soulful strut backing I think)? Or too obvious. Must admit I'll stick my neck out here on this thread, and I do genuinely like Miss Acklin (check out her Lp only version of 'I'll keep on holding on" needs playing out would be maseeve bla bla), but her vocals kinda grate on me on Same Girl, loses her pitch cringingly on more than one occasion. -
Had a Babs Lewis LP once with nothing but a big facial shot of some white lass on the cover....
