Charles Harris in Appreciations on Sport. He also wrote I cant hide it on Aware. Both Aware and Jubilee tracks are published by Chattlee Music. So all three labels are linked and confirmed one in the same.
-
I 'assumed' they were originally from the Carolinas (because of the Tempests bit) and that all 4 that I know of (2 Sport, 1 Aware and 1 Jubilee) were one and the same. Must admit though, haven't listened closely enough yet to the Aware / Jubilee ones but they do sound different. Even the two detroit label ones sound different - though no (?) reason to assume they aren't the same group - 'Cry' is a very beach arrangement (probably the Tempests backing influence of course) and 'Never' a more traditional Detroit arrangement. No biogs around though of the Appreciations (yet...) that I can find, anybody know if I missed any? Again, also any ideas on which DJ played 'Its better to cry'out first and when/where? Mark
-
Just wanted to revive this thread a bit - Tony: where has it been covered in length? Can you point me the right direction? Anybody know who the band members were? Also who played 'Its better to Cry' over here in the UK first, when and where and was it ever c/u'd? Chalky, kind of thing you might be able to help with? Cheers, Mark

Looks like a stereo, £60-80 is the white mark a cover tear from a price sticker? Monos, white demos and dutch Phillips more. Incredible LP. Don't sell it. Mark.

Bear in mind the terminology really applies to a genre (though not a clearly defined one, associated with soul but also a range of styles since the 1940s and development of the Shag) rather than a specific geographical location. Beach music as a term itself was pretty much coined in retrospect in the late 60s / early seventies. Just like how the term 'garage band' was a label applied in the mid seventies I believe, but is now applied to bands from the 60s onwards. Regarding posts on this thread about tracks that 'sound beach' but not from the Carolinas: coastal areas of the Carolinas are obviously most associated with beach music, but the neighbouring states of Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee, were also hotbed of (predominently) white garage bands who tuned into soul including the beach 'sound', and many of these bands travelled across state a few hundred miles on a regular (sometimes weekly) basis to play the coastal areas. There's a LOT more to beach music than than people think or assume. If you can see beyond the stereotype and 'classic' beach there's a lot more musical diversity (should that be sub-genre then perhaps?) and history - all relevant to northern fans - than people are maybe aware of. I am on a personal journey through this very topic at the moment, give me 6 months or so and I'll try to show you how I think northern and beach 'connect'. Mark
