  1. Anybody got 'A secret of mine' for my Frank Foster Harlem Rumble (Triode)? Not one of those dodgey edge warp things though please. Pm me, Mark
  2. I'm in close contact with Nat Speir, founder of (Bob Meyer and) the Rivieras - he told me he was involved as a musician in some sessions with Maurice Williams in NY (think with Bob too) , which never saw the light of day - was this one of them Ady? Think Nat wrote some songs for him too. I must check out 'Look my way'. Was 'Nobody knows' (which was released) from the same session as this track?
  3. That's the issue, the balance between using old obscure images or promo pics and the risk the author feels they want to take regards litigation if the original copyright holder wants to pursue copyright claim. In all cases, every effort should be made to contact the original holder . Some universities have a good practice policy in this regard, eg 3 written attempts to request permission. Even after this, could still be an infringement if somebody pops their head up after a no response. If the originator of the image can't be found at all or is undetermined, same thing.
  4. Anybody know a copyright lawyer?!
  5. Use of photos in a scholarly or editorial context as I understand it (both us and Uk) without seeking permission of the natural copyright holder applies to non profit organisations for research purposes eg research in an academic environment or other non commercial context such as an article written not for profit (and they still have to acknowledge source). In terms of commercial gain ventures I find it difficult to see the difference between a book and a t-shirt (unless the book donates all profits to charity)?
  6. Sorry Paul, didn't have a watch!
  7. ....and newspaper images or clippings, even the smallest of papers from the sixties are archived or currently owned if they still exist by larger congloms - who tend to have a permission cost per use, they are after all in the business. I've had situations where I actually know the photographer who took the shots and is willing to grant permission but because they were a press photographer copyright isn't deemed theirs. Bloody frustrating.
  8. Owned 3 of these (yes!) in the past and seen more, pretty sure were all styrene. On the other hand , didn't think there was enough mass demand for this ( as good as 'hip' is) to the point where someone thought a vinyl boot was in order ?
  9. For my Carolina / Virginia / Georgia 60's soul final draft I've selected the bands I wanted to research and set a personal deadline to the end of this year, otherwise same thing, I'd be going on for years. As I'm only focussing on 60s, it is self contained from a date line respect suppose. However still got never-ending material coming in though, which I wont be able to be deal with this time around because of my schedule, but more than enough for a second edition! Also have found as you go through the process band members give you leads and links to yet more bands and history etc to research. It also means I can have the chance to correct any errors or omissions from the first book . Whilst we have this writers' guild thing going on, can I ask what folks are doing about the legalities of using band promo shots from a copyright perspective? I know there's an unwritten rule that as they was designed for publicity nobody usually pursues copyright action if permission has not been obtained, but technically we should be asking the booking / promo agency / label (where of course these folks can be traced).... in order to do the right thing I have been primarily using personal photos supplied by the band members who I have been interviewing, but just wonder what others are doing? The 50 / 70 year 'free all' rule doesn't quite apply yet I suppose.
  10. Cheers Mick. The CD is actually a sneaky subliminal push for my forthcoming book, for those I haven't bored to death with the tale already! All the groups feature in it, most with band member interviews etc. Van Coble sent me the photo of The Tempests' trailer on the CD cover! Anyways, more playlists please...

  14. Thanks guys! Apart from some fine tuning with Where did I go wrong (any advance on the Catacoombs then?) then this leaves 'it ain't necessary' and. 'Aware of love'. 'Necessary' I am guessing is pretty much one of those juat always been around, or was it played on the back of Mamie Galore? And 'Aware ' I get the feeling more recent years, being an Lp track or the rarer 070 flip ?

  21. This is one of the labels I'm briefly looking at for some book research on the south eastern states. Pete Drake owned the label, his claim to fame was a steel guitar player, played on Tammy Wynette's 'Stand by your man' and played on Elvis' How Great thou Art' LP. Stop Recs was kind of sold / became incorporated into Nashville's Gusto records in the early 70s, which now has the back catalogue of loads of labels like King, Federal etc. Theres maybe only 4ish tracks of some interest to soulies from what I can see, most have been mentioned here. There was some female thing on it (Joyce somebody?) but not sure if any good.
  22. The Soulmasters - I'll be waiting - Raven This was actually PRESSED at the wrong speed (does sound a bit manic but tempo probably suited the messheads of the day) - one of the band members has sent me an mp3 when he re-edited it to the correct speed (bit slower obviously) and cleaned up the quality, will be playing this out on acetate at Bradford next week as it was orginially intended to be heard.
