  1. For me particularly with northern its a scene and a culture with all the memories and foibles that go with it , the musics good but idoes"nt tell the whole story . I play a bit of guitar and love old Lead Belly and Woodie Guthrie also partial to a bit of metal but my go too is always soul and feel very lucky to have been a part of it .
  2. Just brilliant love it
  3. Great feature as I dont get out much its good to see whats currently going on .
  4. Beat me to it Dave . She's my daughter I'm her Pa you aint nothing but a son in law - Trickbag _Earl King .
  5. Thought that was Saxie Russel . Door long leather coat see meself out
  6. Get it baby
  7. Massive difference now at 62 years old dont get out much . Suppose from 1971 to 1977 it was a lifestyle . I love hearing new sounds and enjoy it when I can get out and catching up with old mates . For me nothing can touch those six years though .
  8. Wigan Casino 3am the needle drops every part of your being feels it the drums crash in the bass pulsates through you and George Blackwells vocals hit you , you move in perfect time to the chugging beat and for those three minutes you are the King of the world .
  9. This is the bit I dont get why should I have to avoid the situation ? Could end up spending the whole night avoiding the knob with the camera .
  10. Dont get it at all its of no historical relevance a bunch of middle aged enjoying themselves . The film makers are just doing it for likes or whatever on social media . Puts me of going out if I have to word every dicksplash with a camera . The damage is done now with stuff all over youtube . Imagine someones first impression of the scene is watching a bunch of baggys dancing on the comedy carpet at Blackpool . People that claim to love the scene are doing it no favours .
  11. Shouldnt have to avoid the lens . I have politely asked not to be on photos vids etc at venues and it has upset a few . What these ameteur David Baileys need to realise is that we are not all self obsesed fame whores who love the attention and why should their hobby intrude on my enjoyment . Really glad that Jud bloke has stopped just a pity that he didnt stop because he realised he was a nusiance .
  12. The whole point for me with NS is the originality it reflects a time and a place in history and amplifies that . Re edits have no place on the scene in my humble opinion .
  13. Dont really hate any soul tunes not over keen on The Winstons Colour him father makes me reach for the sick bucket .
  14. Great unusual raw sound one of my favorites
  15. For the general populus music is a disposable commodity with no real value or worth . A workmate of mine thats into Northern said she was going to a Northern do the other week a laptop and cd dj do and that a guest dj was going to do a vinyl spot ,for once I was lost for words .
  16. Do I have to do all the thinking for you lot ? Its not difficult at all , definitive answer the first issue that was available to buy in a shop . Yeah I know demos and acetates just keeping it simple .
  17. My take for what its worth , Northern Soul is so much more than just music its a culture like no other . We place a value on music that for the most part was unloved poorly promoted and never stood a chance until we discovered it in spite of the media who have never got it . "Its what is in the groove that counts " what a glib crass statement . Original vinyl has provenance and a historic relevance and a tangible link to a time ,place and the artist . Many of these sounds on small indepedent labels were probably touted round the local radio stations by the artists themselves then end up in our mits . We love this music it should be treated with due deference and respect . Maybe my views are nieve and a bit daft to some but we are a different breed we are exclusive and eliteist . My name is Mark and I,m a soul snob
  18. Accidental quote sorry
  19. Unfortunatly its not the early seventies anymore . Lots of people love the lighter more comercial social side of the scene and seem to have a good time and fit the media template of what Northern Soul is about weather we like it or not thats what we have now . If thats not what you want pick your venues carefully .
  20. Norfolk Arms Glossop used to go there with Alan Polly Pollard . Great days
  21. Still see Dave Stubbs has a stall on Hyde market . Used to run the Rat Pit in Stockport till it recently shut down ,dont know if he is still running anything . Druffies was a good night fridays iirc . Thursday Blue room Sale no rest for the wicked
  22. I would like to hear more underplayed stuff played out instead of the same old , dont get out much and when I do I wonder why I bother could have stayed in with a compilation cd . On a personal note try to listen to more Phillidelphia International its a bit like cornflakes you forget how good it was .
  23. Brought back memories White and Swales in Stockport looking through the import list and waiting all week to pick your order up . Walked past HMV in Stocky the other week and commented to Jacky that it was all grey haired customers , sign of the times I suppose . I still buy cds rather than download or stream I enjoy the possesion of music on something tangible . Apart the odd compilation not bought much soul from HMV its an overlooked genre and not very well stocked at all .
  24. A dreadfull souless dirge fit for room 101 .
  25. And thats why I would be a useless DJ because Jimmy Caster Its just begun is the best record to start any set anywhere regardless of genre fact
