Isobel if you come from the folk music scene then may I recomend that you watch the Tony Palmer film this England as there is more.folk than soul content in it . (sorry just being glib ) There has never been a decent documenary or programme about northern soul ,they either patronise us or make us look stupid . This England apart from a few minutes footage from the Casino just reinforces the idea that its grim up north and so is of very little worth . As Chorleysoul has said any programme or film has to be made by people that know and love the scene . Black music never gets the credit or attention it deserves most of these top 100 best music list type programmes on tv usually only have one or two black artists listed usually Jacko and Houston ,not a lot of soul there. Soul music wether we like it or not is a minority music and nothern soul is a minority within that . Because of the passion of a small amount of people in reality the scene has continued for longer than anyone expected and in deference to the scene and the artists deserves to be treated with respect . In earlier posts some comparisons to Once upon a time in wigan were made , a great example of it going wrong ,The urban expansions play made by people that had passion and live and breath northern soul was exellent and through humour and observation managed to capture a moment in time . however the Octagon version of the play produced by the clueless just became Mamma Mia meets the Casino wrong on so many levels I am sorry if I sound cynical its because I love this music and care about how its interpreted by people , the plastic bag tells a story in itself if they cant be bothered to get that right why bother at all .

Beats me why we need any film about it in the first place nobody outside the northern scene cares and we already know so whats the point ? Its an ill concieved idea that wont make a jot of difference thankfully . If the film makers are on here and they are bothered about what a few people on here are saying then they dont have much confidence in it either , says it all really .

  5. There are about ten threads running about the Casino says a lot about the place . I cant think of anything bad about the Casino I loved the place and all the daft things about it , the bogs shit pop tunes all part of what made the place ,not much soul but so much fun . The wierd thing is that now I expect so much more from a venue but if I could go back and do it all again I wouldnt hesitate
  6. Oi that was my bit we must have bumped into each other a few times oops sorry mate
  7. Acording to Russ the truth Winstanley the best dancers danced at the front at the Casino and there was a hierachy . I walked in straight to the front and danced there was no hierachy and I wasnt that good a dancer

I am as guilty as the next man when it comes to issues about the comercialisation of "our" scene but when you look at it in the cold light of day the northern scene isnt that comercially viable otherwise it would have been huge , the fact is that most people dont like it that much . The film will just be a flash in the pan and wont interest most folk so I aint going to worry about it . The chicks ffs
  11. All I can remember it was near some cafe type place called the Beachcomber

At the moment I hate the idea of watching the film but curiosity will eventually get the better of me and I will watch it and feel dirty
  14. In Markworld the perfect allnighter would have an across the board music policy and a chill out room playing beat ballads
  15. I am sick of reading threads like this we should be gratefull that we have a healthy scene still . As long as the music fits the basic template of what makes a good dancer it doesnt matter what era its from . oldies V newies grow up ffs
  16. I have a small modest colection and have never paid big money for any sounds so its all relative , I paid 50p for Edwin Starr -My kind of woman/You,re my mellow and was given the Esquires album Get on up and get away . Small potato,s I know compared to some on here
  17. Yeah I know just my English , I wasnt suggesting that you use hot water I was just comentig on the hot water tecnique and how it works . Probably the domestic ultrasonic cleaners work at a lower frequency than medical ones . might get myself one but if my records get eaten Pete its your fault
  18. You need to be very carefull with ultrasonic cleaners they can eat away at the material being cleaned with overuse . I used to work a a technician testing sterilizers and instrument cleaners for hospitals . ultasonic cleaners were tested by suspending alminiun foil strips in the water turning it on and watch the strips get eaten . The boiling water technique will only work if the record is cold and the water is boiling the cold surface of the record in the water will cause the bubbles to collapse thus causing mild cavtation that will dislodge some muck . Sorry about that Ive even bored myself I need to get uot more
  19. Tune in for next weeks top tip How to clean your shoes with dog shit But seriosly this boiling water method seems logical , the turbulance caused by the boiling water would dislodge dirt in a sort of ultrasonic way now theres an idea an ultrasonic record cleaner Back to the lab

In Stockport there is a good choice of decent soul nights but there are still dodgy pub and dinner dance type evenings . On the established soul nights you know they will be well attended and a good mix of quality sounds being played . The other nights will probably have a looser more flexible music policy and are probably run by oppertunists that may or may not have dipped their toe into the scene at some time ,unless the DJ is known I would steer clear There are however exeptions Brian Walker used to run a great pub night in Stockport a few years back
