  1. When you look straight up at the night sky you are looking through the atmosphere at its narrowest thickness, when you look at the horizon at an angle through the atmosphere you are looking through it's thickest part and more likely to distort images, air temperature and movement can have an added effect on image quality as well, described as good or bad seeing by astronomers. Next week on ask Martyn ... how to knit fog
  2. This little beauty was on my lawn at lunchtime, I managed to open a bedroom window without spooking him
  3. A couple of Swans from the other week ... the lone one is doing it's famous Bittern impersonation
  4. We are convinced it's down to the lack of cold weather, I have seen Oystercatchers mating, and the Pigeons have been at it on our garden fence
  5. The light was great yesterday, but the birds were thin on the ground ... still managed to get a shot of these posers, male Reed Bunting and female Blackbird enjoying the Sun.
  6. One went through JM auction for around £950, I have seen for sale at £850 .... (in the 90's £30).
  7. Cheers Steve, it had been a pretty poor morning, awful light and not much of interest to photograph, the other lads had had enough and were making their way home, I decided to give it 30 minutes in the first hide on the off chance a Kingfisher would oblige when I spotted these Reed Buntings having a go at the fraggie heads fairly close and visible on the edge of the reed bed, made it all worthwhile.
  8. A few more of the Reed Buntings, male and female
  9. If you pm me an email address you can have the larger high res version
  10. This is now my desktop wallpaper ... shot on a gloomy morning at Belvide, three Reed Buntings were feasting on the fraggy seed heads, this female posed nicely for me. I shall post a couple more when I have processed them, showing how well camouflaged they are amongst the reeds
  11. He was at the last Willington Steve, best dancer in the room by a mile
  12. Sad to hear of her passing, enjoyed her music and her contributions to Soul Source, but most of all I really enjoyed dancing to her music these past forty odd years R.I.P Lorraine
  13. This one was really keen to have it's photo taken, so I obliged
  14. You've made a lovely job of that tree Steve
  15. This is true, the Willow Tit always looks scruffy compared to the Marsh Tit, there is a white mark on the upper mandible of the Marsh Tit, more obvious in the head on shot, this can appear (not always but usually) on the Marsh but never on the Willow. However their calls are totally different, if you can hear them.
  16. Not been out much of late what with life getting in the way a bit. Anyway a Marsh Tit, often confused with the Willow Tit seen in Steve's picture further up the page
  17. Sad news indeed, he was part of the furniture, always welcoming, always a tale, proud to call him a friend, deepest condolences to Karen and his family. Martyn & Carol
  18. Not mine ... pinched off Twitter ... made me laugh
  19. Been ages since I saw one in my garden Steve ... the Greenfinch have taken over the feeders.
  20. Dave and I used to take the mick out of each other relentlessly, usually over football. We went to see him in hospital last week, I cannot believe he is no longer with us, he was in such good spirits. Rest in peace my old friend, thoughts and sympathy to Shirley and his family. Love Martyn and Carol xxx
  21. A female Common Darter was one of the many Dragonflies taking advantage of the sun on Monday
  22. £2127.00 ... there is a post on here with a few of the results from last week LINK
  23. Baby Don't You Weep is the better side for me, the other one on the label I'm Gonna Love You is also a favourite of mine. No idea on value of the boot, and I dread to think what the real ones fetch these days, a bit more than the few quid I would have paid no doubt.
  24. This juvenile Blue Tit feeding on the suet balls is just starting to get it's blue head feathers come through
  25. I actually got out with my camera yesterday, the first time in months, it seemed strange getting back into the old routine, it did me good. I managed a very accommodating Kingfisher posing on the branch specifically set up for them, only issue was it was back lit, probably best going up to this hide late afternoon so the sun is behind me. Also got a Snipe out in the open, which is unusual, they do like to hide away normally.
