  2. Dean im not sure our price and virgin were going in the early eighties ( im messing) but your right it had become a slightly specialist buy, there were loads of record shops where you could go to In Newcastle we had Callers and Hitsville USA, In Whitley Bay we had DJs records run by a club DJ called Ruben Condi i bought some superb stuff from there and in North Shields - Rumbelows run by another DJ called (i kid you not) Captain Groovy (trevor was his real name LOL) but if you wanted a tune new release or back catalogue all of these would get them in for you, apart from hitsville who were buying all that stuff in anyway by the shed load. And i used to order from hotwaxx in warrington Kev Edwards place. I do agree with nick they weren't rare grooves there used to be and are shed loads of some of the tracks labeled "raregroove" they were just not mainstream, a bit like any specialist area. 5. From the early to mid eighties the two step rare groove scene had a huge following, I used to run a club in whitley bay called the compass for four years we had a sunday soul night playing from northern right through to recent releases, through the week the background music was all stuff like weldon irvine I love you, light of the world, direct drive, glenn jones, lenny white, & most of the tracks mentioned previously in this post and many never to be heard of again artists etc etc, There were some superb DJs out there who used to push this stuff into the mainstream dance club scene like Lofty who was the main dj at the Garden farm nr chester le street and the Sands club in whitley bay, Peter simpson who became my dj at the compass but originally from churchills could go to Churchills on a saturday night in Whitley and hear stuff i've never even heard of again on the modern soul scene and of course when i moved south i used to go to an exceptional night at Clouds in Bradford on a Wednesday with my big buddy Peter Briscoe from whitehaven where yogi and owen would push some superb music, not withstanding the huge contribution Thorne had on this scene from the early eighties. (loved it back then) and who cannot fail to mention The Carlton Club Warrington that was brilliant. I suppose my point is its always had a following and why not, the 60s scene has always had its rare portion and i suppose when djs play out new releases they don't know at that time they are going to be rare groove, those tracks just didn't take off for whatever reason. but music collectors or followers of this genre did put themselves out, heard these tracks and pockets of clubs and supporters did manage to find venues for like minded soul where they could listen to them. Heres one for you though...sheffield community radios anyone listening to that in the eighties were treated to musical delights it was like people just came off the street with a box of records and said give us a spot they played from the heart, some of the stuff was mind blowing (some of the djaying was questionable LOL big pauses mis cues ) BUT no one could fault the groundbreaking music they played. I dont think either that a lot of the USA music we were listening to even crossed over to the Jazz funk scene of the time, a lot was aimed at the club scene (probably to slow down from the 126 BPM disco tracks that used to grace the decks LOL) I do think Norman Jay who was mentioned earlier whilst wasn't the originator of the scene he did have the wider platform to promote it and that he did. But i also remember a DJ called Ian Hughes with his rhythm and groove show and Andy Peebles and before that Al matthews saturday night soul show all on radio two they were just as instrumental at pushing brand new and rare tracks Geeoooooordie

  15. I must have been asleep, how did i miss this post, Lorraine a very, very, late how do you do from me, forgive my lack of observation when browsing this forum, all i can say is I am honoured to be typing this to you, im sure many have said this already but you have brought many happy hours to myself and my entire family over the years with your music. My father who is 86 now was/is a soul/jazz music fanatic and i first heard you, courtesy of him, my brothers and sisters all 6 of them had a daily diet of soul music and they will just hoot when i tell them. I will just say the cramps and aches i got from many hours of dancing were worth it every time, and to this day when the opening bass and hand claps of i cant change, or the starting drum rift on what can i do, or the impatient drum beat that runs out on i cant hold on, explode from the speakers, every persons hair stands on end shivers hit the spine and every dance floor in the UK fills with dancing frenzied pleasure, if your dancing or watching its an absolute delight Thank you and a very belated welcome to soul source Ian (geordie) Johnson PS a geordie is a person from the north east of england just in case
  16. Collecting is a hobby and a fun thing lets not get too down on the rare records are crap etc debate, i just think there are crap records about whatever the price...but again thats a matter of taste for the individual... The desire to own a rare record consumes everyman/collector...then once you get your hands on it it goes in the box and gathers dust, , how many times have i sweated over a purchase then realised the dream and shat myself silly until the postie arrives package opened ...hurrah its in good order and ..now ive moved on to the next one, i suppose thats part of the thrill and to get a bit of a woodie if you do get a chance to play it out and about, and if a few admiring glances and comments come your way its a bonus, albeit many would, in discussions about said record, shave a quarter of the pounds paid, off the purchase price just to let everyone know they had bagged a bargain ...oh cum on weve all been there and love it even if its a bit of a boasting thing. Ive bought and sold up 3 times mainly due to financial constraints brought about by buying records im having fun but its nice to see the passion pouring over on this debate...again and again I must admit with the last post though i have grown up a bit now and love getting thick into a records production, arrangement , vocal talent etc, and i dont seem to have a specific type of soul i like anymore, one time it was out and out northern now, its what floats the (getting very old) boat. Geeooooordie
  17. Dave PM TSU Tomatoes, read on another thread that he met AJ brown maybe he can give us the concise run down of the labels??
  18. Doh...... Ive just clicked the links......certainly the one on popsike looks plausible, would the truth be in the type of pressing it is?? a lot of the stuff ive had in my hands from around this era seems to be pretty thick, heavy, none flexible pressings, i know its not a benchmark but all my early third world stuff or other pressings from jamaica are like this its only the releases or pressings outside jamaica that are the bog standard vinyl. I know my 12 inch Now that weve found love needs an army to carry it Geeoooooordie
  19. Hi Dave As you know i pondered for a while before i bought my copy from the reggae brigade in New York they are more over zellous about rare originals than the Northern scene is, especially on jamaican records as there seems to be no consistancy, i nearly bought one with a picture sleeve originally but didnt see the actual record so cant vouch for the label but what i was told by the guys in the usa was As chalky rightly points out the original (are they demos?) are the one he has listed, and they are thick/heavy pot like pressings a bit like the early third world records, the reggae boys then said that the issues were on 2 other different coloured labels a beige and flat lightish blue and then another, who knows what that was, possibly the one you've found on popsike it had a black and white picture sleeve, but was a later date (how much later i dont know) to meet demand, then the boots appeared that i suppose mimicked the later original press, but im guessing at that. Geeoooooordie
  20. When we started the friendship nights we were concious not to use the tag line of "Northern" as its seemed to have pidgeon holed music, when i was looking for a venue we were at a bar in hudersfield and the owner said " is it that Heel and toe type dancing" i thought well yeh Northern is a particular dance style that suites a certain style of music but Soul is more than that. so we had "pure soul" 60's 70's etc. when my big, in her 60's, sister got into the scene it was "Rhythm and Soul" But i do think when I see Northern on a flyer i assume now its an oldies night I suppose the term "Northern" creates a bretheren, .....gather round brother.... gather round Geeooooordie
