Lol smart arse, no I was simply curious to know how this would work or go down to a younger crowd as I thought it was more about the music being presented than the age of the person playing it. Regards - Mark Bicknell - age 50 1/2 lol -

Northern Soul Deejay's Of The Future ?
Mark Bicknell replied to Suinoz's topic in All About the SOUL
Yes but the traditions and general mind set of rare soul DJ'ing is to own and play rare records often most of the desired tunes are hard to find and exspensive, also rightly or wrongly the DJ who holds and plays the so called big ticket items will get the kudos and adulation over the DJ who plays lesser valuable tunes sad but true, note I said valuable and not quality as we all know that many cheaper records leave some of the big ticket items for dead it that respect, this is part of the reason why top level DJ'ing would sometimes appear to be a closed shop as some people perceive those DJ's with the big ticket records to be the best at what they do well we all know if you have deep pockets you can buy what records you want but I'm not sure if this route makes you a good DJ or not? Hi Mark, collecting records is a very addictive thing to get into as soon as you buy your first record the bug hits and you want the next record, I guess some of us take it for granted and buying records is almost second nature, I wheel, deal, swap, trade it's how I've always done it, I have to pick up on one of your comments that you are finding it hard to get a decent box together due to cost and availability well if you have the funds in place and are selective in what you buy you could this very second go on Ebay for example and almost instantly buy a good selection of records often at 'Buy It Now' prices at any given time on UK Ebay alone there is something like 12,000 records on offer, wade through the crap, bootlegs and overpriced stuff and you can find some pretty tasty records, not to mention the sales section here on Soul Source and the many established record dealers worldwide, perhaps a good starting point for you would be to use your CD collection as a reference point ident the tunes you like and put a wants list together from that, give yourself a budget and with a little hard work and a couple of Grand you could put a very tasty playbox together almost instantly, I feel the availability of records is not the issue here as there are thousands of records out there for sale the problem is perhaps the financial commitment you get into when collecting records as I said at the top of my reply here once the bug hits it can take over pretty quickly, half the joy of collecting is the chase and the process of hunting, locating, buying, getting a record putting in in a nice clean cover placing it in the collection or DJ box and moving onto the next one and that's the problem I would suggest that most if not all collectors are never really happy, never really complete, I'm currently buying stuff I either used to own or which passed me by before infact I've just bought a couple of things which I sold only recently such is the weirdness of collecting Northern Soul lol. If you stay away from getting involved in the big ticket items which is easy to say until you buy your first biggie then as before it's onto the next one and so it goes but if you can do that with a modest investment as I say you can very quickly put a very solid DJ box together, research and knowing your subject is a big plus, ask questions, suck up all the information you can through Soul Source alone we are learning all the time and is a massive help to collectors/DJ's old and new, good luck but remember once you dip your toe mate the chase is on trouble is you will never quite catch what your looking for no matter how hard you try or how much money you spend lol Regards - Mark Bicknell. -

The age of a DJ should not come into of course with age comes experence but it should be about if the DJ has the records and can cut the mustard behind the decks and not how old he or she is. Regards - Mark Bicknell. -
£150.00 to £200.00 seems to be an average price on Popsike. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

The very same thing happened to me a few years ago, visited my parents and there was a junk box of 45's in the shed which I must have left years before, flicked through them and found a VG copy of The Trends - Gonna Have To Show You - ABC hapy days. Mark Bicknell.

I Really feel for the bloke here, hurts like hell when you have a few go missing but can't imagine a full box worth, about 15 years ago my wife Jacqui took a small fifty sales box to a soul night locally to us, front of the box, Ollie Jackson - Wipe Away The Tear Drops, Velvet Satins - Demo, Dickie Wonder, Hesitations - Built That Way - Demo, Intros - Jamie Issue and several others were removed from the front of the box by some low life chancer, when Jac got home I was off to an allnighter and as soon as I picked the box up I knew it was light of a few records, opened it up and this cold panic went through me like I'd been hit by a bus, all the tasty sales at the front gone, had no way of finding out who took them and never got them back, all you can wish for is that whoever steals records will have nothing but bad luck, I can't see what pleasure anyone would get by actually playing a stolen record, has to be financial reasons to try and make a fast buck through someone's misery. Good luck and I so hope you get them back, all you can do is move forward as time heals and all that but even after all these years it still angers me to think someone at a soul night could steal from a fellow soul fan, if they wanted the records that bad or did'nt have the funds I would sooner give them the fucker rather than have it stolen. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Elbie Parker - Please Keep Away From Me - Veep Demo - styrene copy, strong VG+ condition plays nice but as with many copies there is some slight styrene distortion which has remained the same since I've had it, plays well nice and loud, hard record to find, I'm pretty fussy when it comes to condition but due to the nature of styrene I have to mention this - £450.00 reduced good price - cheques/postal orders/cash and pay pal welcome as a gift to avoid fees, postage free sent special delivery - contact bicknellmark@aol.com or via PM here. Regards - Mark Bicknell

Slightly repeating myself here but a valid point is sometimes you have to go backwards to move forward, recently I was trying to work out what first drew me to this music and the answer was so obvious I was blinded, messing about with records one afternoon I stuck on things like Jackie Lee - The Duck, Temptation Walk,Little Hank Mr Bang Bang Man, Gene Chandler - Mr Big Shot and so on, POW! tunes what it's basically all about, powerhouse driving beats, stunning vocals, perfect tempo etc. it really matters to me what era these records are from as I've said before a quality record is a quality record or imagine Jackie Lee - The Duck had never been discovered until now it would certainly hold it's own with the likes of Margret Little and in my opinion leave it for dead no contest, so many records get left behind in the pursuit of something new and different which is all well and good if the new and different hold the key ingredients and traditions of a quality tune. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Went down the rare route for many years when I was DJ'ing and it's so easy to get sucked into the if it's cheap it can't be any good syndrome which we all know is total bollocks lol, there so so many cheap/common/easy to find records that if they were hard to find they would be four figure sum records in terms of musical quality and merit if that makes any sense, stuff like The C.O.D.'s - I'm A Good Guy, Syl Johnson - Try Me, Lou Bond - You Shake Me Up etc. etc. all hold their own with the big ticket items in terms of quality, it's funny that kudos seems to only come if records are shit rare and high priced, perhaps this is less important these days but it certainly has been the case over the years, if you scratch the surface and step under it then there are hundreds of records out there to go at, digging around on Ebay in the wee small hours most certainly proves that lol Regards - Mark Bicknell.
-
Seems to me that the quality new discoveries are few and far between these days as it's already been stated here to find a new 60's record to compare with the now classics is now rare in it's self, however perhaps the injection to freshen things up is sitting right under our noses, I've started to revisit things which I used to have or which passed me by before and when you actually start to play one or two things it's easy to see that some records take on a whole new life and you forget how good they actually are, quality is quality from whatever era. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

I would ahve thought a very small venue with DJ's and punters under five feet tall...get it mini allnighter lol

Funny this I was going through a couple of boxes and found this the other night, remember picking the 45 up a few years ago, what a great tune. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
