  1. Promotion is a key point, decent professional looking flyer and posters, get a network of people to distribute flyers for you and better to go over the top with flyers that not enough 3000 to 5000 per event should generate a decent percentage of payers through the door, events thread here on SS and Facebook is a superb advertising tool, get the details of the event to local Radio stations who host a soul show, try to build up an email mailing list so Membership is good in that respect so you can obtain all contact details, and make sure you have enough money in your back pocket to be able to pay all your expences DJ fees etc.if it goes tits up then it's down to you to cover the short fall. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  2. Good list Keith as ever, you are so right about The Freeman Brothers not sure if you had arrived but played it at The Verve Allnjighter, stunning record. Mark

  4. Ben E. King - Cry No More - Atco Wanted - Nice clean copy please, will pay fair price, contact bicknellmark@aol.com or via PM here. Now sorted, many thanks for the replies. Mark.
  5. Like I said mate it's a gesture nothing more. Mark
  6. I've included postage on big records as a gesture and thanks but that's my choice however you try getting free postage off the major record dealers lol at the end of the day it's business and if you give it free to one customer you have to give it to all of them so for the sake of 6 quid to get insured postage on a rare record is a small price to pay if it goes tits up and gets broken or something. Regards - Mark Bicknell.
  7. Not seen this until last night had time to digest it and reflect on it and I have to say I'm so glad I did'nt go to the pictures to see this as there would have been a scene with the manager asking no demanding my money back, forget the hype, forget the subject matter for a second as we are all a little protective of the subject but 'Soulboy' is quite simply a bad movie, bad script with very little story or plot, bad acting, low budget, it has no heart, passion or direction and I knew it would be average but it fell way short of that, I'm not having a go for having a go's sake but in a word it was crap and I would be very suprised if the film makers broke even on their investment here which I suspect as I said was very low budget in the first place not that low budget always means bad film but in this case it was a bad film, as a subject it deserved better, it should and could have been a gritty drama instead it turned out to be very retro in it's presentation rather than being pure nostalgia which are two very different things between actually being there and wanting to be there which is the fundimental error in retro attitude and culture it simply does not work unless you have a true understanding first hand of the subject. Before anyone shoots me down and says that this movie was a love story set in 1974 with a Northern Soul soundtrack fine not a problem with that it stll not a good film no matter how you dress it up sorry, one or two scenes made me chuckle like in the record bar when the bloke said he had stompers, toe tappers etc. almost fell off the sofa as it was so off the wall but had to hide behind the sofa with the dance off at the end what was that all about? Regards -Mark Bicknell.
  8. 9. A drug at number one says it all really as with pretty much all club culture the quality of drugs often make the difference or so it seems. Mark Bicknell.

Point taken Chalky and forgive me but I checked the diary thingy here and nothing was listed on those dates, of course I will avoid those dates but what is the point in having the listings if you don't fillin the details on the dates??? in advance like everyone else appears to have done already. Mark.

  21. When we ran The North Cheshire Soul nights in Stockport, Manchester for about a ten year period we were always busy always packed and had some pretty well known DJ's on, I asked Richard to DJ several times but the dates were wrong for him but after nailing a date down finally he came to the Cheshire to DJ, now the venue was one which filled around 10pm/10.30pm and the pace and night picked up, however when Richard Searling was on we were full to the rafters by 9pm which made for one of the best nights down there, Richard's name, reputation, integrity etc.is still one of the few DJ's who can actually put bums on seats or on the dance floor lol, he can DJ for who he wants when he wants if he wants, when he came to our event it was never about the money or anything like that more about finding a free date infact it was harder getting him a signed Spurs football as a gesture of thanks and let me tell you for a Chelsea fan took some doing. Regards - Mark Bicknell gh we were not an Allnighter
