Mr Croasdell And Mr Rounce Do It Again
Mark Bicknell replied to Mark Bicknell's topic in All About the SOUL
Here, here Malc, two superb packages. Regards - Mark Bicknell. -
Two must have CD's have just landed from Ace/Kent and I must say Mr Croasdell and Mr Rounce have done it again with two superb packages firstly 'The Very Best Of Garland Green' - CDKEND 303 24 stunning tracks from Chicago's outstanding Soul Singer covering his output on Revue, Uni, Cotillion, Spring, RCA and Ocean-Front, compiled by Ady Croasdell with superb sleeve notes by Ady and the legendary Robert Pruter author of Chicago Soul, 'Girl, I Love You', 'Ain't That Good Enough', 'It Rained Forty Days And Nights', 'Angel Baby', 'Jealous Kind Of Fella' and others are all here and sound glorious, as with all Kent releases the sound quality is second to none, sleeve notes to die for, well researched and in my opinion one of the best CD's to hit the streets in ages. And if Mr Croasdell's efforts are not enough in comes Mr Rounce with a solid uppercut square on the jaw this time from 'The Vibrating Vibrations' - The Okeh And Epic Singles 1963 - 1968 - CDKEND304 which is the first official CD release of this seminal Los Angeles vocal groups best mid 60's Okeh and Epic singles including all the Northern biggies plus five previously unreleased recordings one of which is simply outstanding Track 11 - 'The Searching Is Over' alongside 25 winners including an unedited Stereo mix of 'Cause You're Mine' which puts this classic into another dimension, 'Gonna Get Along With Out You Now' 'Finding Out The Hard Way', 'End Up Crying', Ain't Love That Way' are all here and cement what a quality group these guys were, as with the Garland Green CD Tony has left no stone unturned with his detailed and informative sleeve notes which are first class, basically you can't really improve on perfection, wait to you hear the previously unissued 'Follow Your Heart' playing on my PC right now which is fan bloody tastic Mr Rounce! Kent are still by far the best in the re issue business head and shoulders above the rest and these two packages confirm this, if you gonna do it do it right and Ady, Tony and Kent have certainly got it right this time. Do yourselves a favour and put these two on the list of must buys asap. Full previews/reviews on my show next Sunday September 28th www.starpointradio.com Garland Green - CDKEND 303 Track Listing 1. Ian, can I be candid on this one without being rude and there is no easy way to say this but in the true sense of the grass roots way many DJ's on the rare soul scene collect and source their records is not in the main through the sound file route, internet etc. etc. you hit the nail on the head by saying what you used to do back in the day, personally I think it's a cop out to say some rarities are only for the rich kids on the block, perhaps more the case if you can't stand the heat get out of the kitchen? and you don't have to get into the thousand pound plus big ticket items to present a good spot, I'm all for unissued, unknowns etc. via CD and re - issue and feature and play pretty much all the authentic stuff on the show but out and about on the soul scene DJ circuit most not all DJ's use the original vinyl 45 format above all else except maybe some of the Modern boys who source tracks from newly released CD, if we were to take the down load route then would it not be fair to suggest that rare soul DJ's as we know them would become redundent as anyone can plug in a CD player or Lap Top and play tunes much the same way you can by using bootlegs, I'm not having a go Ian but the very foundation and backbone of the Rare Soul scene from it's conception to now is based in the main on rare, hard to find records, if we loose that then really whats the point? For many of us I'm sure the whole point of what we do is the passion and desire to own the real deal, I have no objection for new material as I say and simply collect and present rare soul as exactly that be it a five pounder cheapie or a big ticket item, it has nothing to do with ego it's about having the real deal within your means, sure you can source George Pepp - 'The Feeling Is Real' for example via the net, sound file CD or bootleg but ask most collectors and DJ's which format they would sooner hold and plain and simple the answer would be on USA Coleman. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

This old chestnut of Original Vinyl Only V other means seems to go round in circles, fact of the matter is on this scene the only way to do the DJ thing is with OVO in terms of gaining a solid reputation as a DJ, respect from fellow DJ's and collectors and doing it the right and proper way, the very nature and backbone of the scene is it's fed and based on in the main by obscure, hard to find rare soul records, no matter how you dress it up or use the excuse of it's 'what comes out of the speaker' that counts I think everyone knows in their heart of hearts that there is no short cuts in becoming a DJ on this scene, big difference of being someone who plays music and a true rare soul DJ, having been part of this DJ thing for a number of years it has always been important to me to do it the right way with OVO, head held high knowing that my efforts are at least authentic and I'm not talking about how rare or how much the records cost or are worth. I can name many people on here who sport the corner of OVO thats just how it is, old school, keeping it real and doing the very best they can, there are hundreds of records I've never owned but would not dream of using a bootleg or carver just to play a popular or big tune it's simply not in the rule book, leave it to the DJ's with the real deal to play, dig deep, move on and develop what you do within your means and try and create your own style rather than cutting corners and cheating basically yourself. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Nail on head there Pete so much more in life to deal with and enjoy, family, business, football etc. etc. we all know N-Soul can take over your life it certainly did mine for over 30 years and perhaps as a way of life it's not all it's cracked up to be again nothing to do with the wonderful music just all the other stuff that comes with the commitment and passion. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

This is one of the main reasons why I and I'm sure many others out there choose not to contribute or get involved on here as much as we used too due to the constant barrage of personal abuse, attacts, snipping, bad blood, people who think they can say what they like to who they like and stuff the consiquences, I myself have been involved in some of the negative stuff on here in the past and even closed my account a couple of times to try and avoid the conflict with one or two people, the best way to combat the bad vibes is I feel to totally ignore it and not rise to the bait, often saying nothing speaks far more than steaming straight in there with all guns blazing, I'm not gonna directly comment on this current thread and batlle of wills between 'Jock' who I know very well and respect a great deal and 'Beeks' who I don't know as any comment would be percieved as being biast towards Jock, the problem with Soul Source sometimes is the passion gets in the way and we become very deffensive, angry and self opinionated and often some comments and observations can be totally taken out of context or read in a totally different way to which they were written, basically sometimes putting words in the original posters mouth or seeing things in a totally different light. I must say I can honestly say I'm happy to not be involved with the scene too much anymore and the main reason for this is to do with this constant infighting and pretty much all negative threads and actions on and off this website and have no real desire to be involved or around something I once loved because it's been destroyed from it's very core, nothing to do with the music or the joy and pleasure it still it gives me as that will last forever. This is really hard to say but if I'm totally honest the SCENE bores the shit out of me and has no real draw anymore even from a DJ perspective I'm just not interested which is partly to do with all the crap that goes on behind the scenes and on public forums etc. the bullies, pontificating and all the other negative stuff just ends up chipping away at you and in the end you just don't care anymore. I've got to the stage where it's really not that important anymore and basically I don't care what people think, say or do no mater who they are, respect due to many people on the scene and here on Soul Source and the scene in general but please if you have a beef with someone maybe try and sort it out off this forum if possible. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Try John Manship as he had one on his paper list the other week, might be worth a go. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

You can add another O.V.O venue to the list Steve, only one punter and one DJ though 'Bicknell's Bedroom' pretty good across the board music policy played on first class equipment, decent stylus changed on a regular basis. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

James Crawford - Honest I Do - Part 1 - Omen, well known label for the likes of Brice Coefield, Wooden Nickles etc. etc. a James Brown production this is yet another little sleeper which has found favour with me in 'The Soul Shack' over recent Sundays, just a solid little record that would cut the mustard at the gigs, won't set you back more than about £30.00, well worth a punt if you don't know it. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Know what you mean Brett but that's just down to the passage of time mate. Regards - Mark Bicknell.

Over the past three or four years I've moved on some so called big ticket items with no regrets, in that time I've also picked up as many records as I've sold, I think the best way to value your collection is on musical content and quality rather than the price tag or current high selling prices on some records, records are for playing and enjoying and should not be treated as an investment or pension plan, having a pretty solid collection still of mid priced records and some bigger ticket items I dread to think of the current market value, still this only comes into play when selling stuff, Ted Massey pointed something out to me the other day regarding the high asking prices on some records and that it's got a little out of hand again as like Ted, myself and others who picked up tunes a bit back for a bargain or lesser price than today's market that we perhaps should take this into account to maybe get back to a more realistic market place as some records have been somewhat inflated due to demand, hype etc. by the same token as already stated on this thread people will only pay what a tune is worth to them and that sometimes means getting involved in auctions and perhaps bidding way over book or market price, the must own it mentality as we all know takes over sometimes. Best thing to do is collect what you like, get as much pleasure and enjoyment out of your records and bugger the cost or worry about how much they will be worth down the line, example Cashmeres, Four Tracks, Dena Barnes, George Blackwell etc. etc. etc. are good records be they one thousand pound each or a fiver. Regards - Mark Bicknell Off to see Chelsea put three or four past Manchester City this very afternoon.....lol
