  1. Just been to see this show and thought it was a great show. I wonder what would have happened had they included You're Ready Now? The crowd were really up for it anyway with the 4 seasons big hits, but I just wonder if they had included YRN, whether it would have topped it off and maybe got a re-release. By the way, Im not actually a big fan of YRN, but it has a place in the past as a big toon. Ed
  2. Sold off most of my 45s, but still have the odd one thats was too hard to let go including Mack Simmons Turning Point. Also whilst sorting out some left over albumn, came across the RARE STAMPS lp (jjb & sm), put it on and must admit every soul lover should have this, real Detroit quality. Ed
  3. I agree. Last time I went to a temps and tops concert it was only half full and they are more well know. Are these acts (less MW) ORIGINAL members or the offspring etc. Its quite expensive ticket prices for second generation, although of course I will be going. Ed
  4. The point breaks into 2 main criteria. Other than motown, which label has produced the most recognised northern soul records, and then which label has produced the most northern soul records in ratio to total records produced lets say between 1964 and 1974. Of course its not likely to be the same label. The idea of listing Wand (Maybe I should have added Scepter) was to illustrate a good contender for the second category. I suppose Atlantic or Stax would win the first category. Its just a debate to fill the day like most of the threads on this site. Chill out more. Ed
  5. The main room had a reputation of playing some pretty bad stuff from time to time, although in the few times I went, I cant remember it being that bad, but Did Mr Ms have the luxury of filtering the bad out from the good when rejuvinating those long forgotten oldies? Ed
  6. Im not sure that the majority of punters ever get to know the DJs and / or Promoters well enough to make a choice based on 'liking them'. Maybe more reaction is placed upon music policy/choice/ and the old chestnut of original format/MP3 heaven etc. Also not sure that being thought of as a nice person, was high on the agenda of those in question. Highest craving I imagine is how to part you from your cash or crave your adulation. 'Oh Lord its hard to be humble' you may hear under the breath. Ed
  7. There could be a few contenders but this must be close to the top: https://www.globaldogproductions.info/w/wand.html One of my favourites from this: https://www.curtisblandon.com/photos.html Ed
  8. Wash your mouth out Patti Jo is Fan bloody tastic. Ed
  9. Isnt this one of the records also in demand in the LOW RIDER USA scene.? I also seem to remember when it first got played it was covered up, but sounded so much like the admirations that it took minutes to 'uncover'. Ed
  10. Hi I have read quite a few books and journals that covers up to 'about 75/76' but after that the normal stuff regarded as modern seems to be harder to find in terms of published materials, thats all. Nothing should be missed out, thats for sure, but I suppose there is always a start point. The top 5/600 book covers some of this material, but there is still a bunch of great records that would benefit from a short story/label scan/bla bla to establish who made it/found it/championed it etc. I just like reading that kind of info, and I guess there is probably double the quantity of stuff from 75 to 85 as there was from 65 to 75. (perhaps?) Ed
  11. Seriously, I have never heard the record played anywhere at a soul event. I'm not saying I dont like it but apart from hearing it on the Pye LP in the 70s and seeing the odd copy on Wand in a few sales boxes, its fame must only be on the recent reworked version in the charts. Was it a big Torch/Wheel spin?
  12. Following on from recent topics, has anyone wrote a book about artists/records/labels etc covering soul records from say 1976 onwards? that have been played on the scene? Maybe like the top 500 sort of thing? Ed
  13. I understand Eddie Holmans 'Where Im not wanted' was getting played 4 times in the same spot at one point. As someone who only went there a few times, the ones that stood out to me were Quick change artist, Rosemary, Interplay, and Rhino. How many though of those listed so far were played there first time or just very popular there? I always thought all the Lou Roberts tracks where levine discoveries that he just did not get round to playing at the Mecca!! Ed
  14. I thought you could pick up good cheap copies for the Whitby do's anyway Ed
  15. Mary Hopkins John...................................... I can also remember a mate at the time called Mick Goulding who was the first lad I knew to wear the mohair jumper, drainpipes, and winkle pickers, who had stuff like, Fifth Amendment, Mandrill, Heartstoppers, Four Sonics, and United Image. He had decided to sell up the Mecca stuff and concentrate on the new Jazz Funk stuff like 'Sun is here' and 'Peg', but to me at the time this mecca stuff was still cutting edge and rarely played anywhere else. The Snaith all dayers were great, but small scale, although I think it kick started the Thorne events that only played 'modern'. Ed
  16. Wow, what a record to hear live. Makes you wanna holla. Ed
  17. I thought Johnny Bragg (RIP) found his woman had been playing around and sorted her out. The song 'talking about me' was his way of dealing with everybody else knowing about her cheating apart from him, therefore making him a laughing stock. Billy Arnell's tough girl was supposed to have been a self funded project that in the end bombed and made him skint. At the LA 2004 EVENT, Gwen Owens was selling her record collection to make a few $$$, Bobby Paris was shelf stacking down the road at a Walmart type shop, Patrice Holloway (RIP) was in a drug Rehab clinic and too ashamed to attend, Some artists wanted a donation to have your picture taken with them, so again must have been down on their luck. All in all, I think its pure coincidence that any of the records made famous on our scene, especially the rarer ones, ever got a second chance and that there are still lots of 'heroes' unaware of the status they would hold if they were contacted. Ed
  18. Sounds like she (or he) is gonna 'squeal like a pig' What a romantic song to hear if you just broke down outside his woodshed. Yow. Ed
  19. Bumpy Road ahead - The lovelites, not heard that in ages, thanks for reminding me. Let the insinuations and allegations begin. Ed
  20. Last year whilst on a short break to Benidorm, we picked up some bottles of Red Wine for 1 euro a bottle in back street 'open all hours' type shop. They were used as raffle prizes for the junior football team on Sundays. Lord knows what it tasted like, but I reckon it come from the same batch as GSH talked about. Narbay. Ed
  21. It was played all the time in 1976 alongside traditional 60s stuff when I started going to soul events with stuff like the Tramps, Voices of East Harlem, Anderson Brothers etc, so I'm guessing there must have been a start date around the early 70s for the 'new sound' to have been introduced obviously as new releases. Any of you 50 somethings remember the first modern tunes to be played? Ed
  22. The scene has always been elitist, from fashion to record collecting. Its always been full of people judging others and creating the modern day equivelant of a class structure. Its what makes debates on this forum interesting. Oh Lord its hard to be humble.............................etc. Ed
  23. Lets be realistic, if DJs are not going to play original format, then they may as well play cd/mp3 format as its the easiest way to have the biggest selection, like at Soul in the Sun etc/Manhattens bar. These days i'm not sure if the main credentials of a good DJ is simply that they have original format music. Its great if they have, but making the crowd have a good time is probably more important on the whole. Everybody has got almost every record on cd/mp3 anyway, so the super rare stuff thats not been re-issued one way or another up to now is going to be covered up anyway. Ed
  24. Poke? Somebody kindly posted a sound clip of it on here about a year ago for me. Great record. Ed
  25. It sounds like a dog eat dog world you live in Sir. Ed
