  1. Cheers. When I told a mate about this ' because of my heart' record I'd just heard...he said it was quite well known but super rare...so that explains not knowing it a little bit. FB has done well since those early days. Ed
  2. Gamble was the first label i saw it on....not that that helps.. And just to cheeky...anybody know when 'because of my heart' was first played? I first heard it on a comp lp about 81? Ed
  3. Not seen a hedgey out in the open in 20 years. Quite a way from its home as well I suspect. Ed
  4. It used to great fun sticking a cassette in the car of tunes you did not own or know particulary well. Lifes simple pleasures! Ed
  5. Anybody still do this? I used to send out tapes and then cds up until about 1990 and then stopped. Last one I received was an alt version mix of big tunes by lesser known versions. Obviously today, you could just send a list or even a link, and probably most folks could YouTube the tracks themselves. Ed
  6. Sir A suggestion for your next mix... Ed
  7. Oscar Perry I got what you need. Lost it in my old house somewhere as a £1 special. Mainstring was with it, but that turned up. Whats it worth now? The new occupants are sitting on a nice meal for two, if they locate it! Ed
  8. Just take them to an across the board, anything goes, just pay the entrance fee night, and they will very likely here those 3 in that order. Its all good init. Ed
  9. Only know the one.....from Norfolk. Ed
  10. Nicely. I'll have it off you for a fiver if you like.. Ed
  11. What did Godin say to his staff? Oy, put some of that "alt" soul music on for these northern lads buying records....you know that "northern soul". I still think he was taking the piss... Ed
  12. I'd say probably not. Upon my first all nighters at cleethorpes, I had got some new fred Perry t shirts. I told my slightly older mate I was going to sew on some northern soul patches. He said, that's not a good idea...as you will be called a div...no such thing as northern soul... I heeded his advice. Daunting decisions for a 14 year old... There did seem to be a hesitancy to use the term northern soul. Maybe an East Coast thing. However, today, it seems totally acceptable, it includes virtually every possible permutation of musical style that can be played. The new direction for many is actually 'across the board' anything goes. Its all good. Onviously there were some events claiming to be rare soul, which for sure I prefer to across the board, but accept im in a minority. Ed
  13. I guess its the fact that you could hear the whispers and the beat goes on (I've got the lp!) At your local disco, but you could only hear the whispers, I can remember at a northern and/ or rare soul night. I remember on the flyers for Samantha's for example, they listed the tunes you could hear there. After all it has always been a little bit about offering something unique and different whether its music, fashion, transport! Ed
  14. Ha ha...then we have to define rare soul. In my humble opinion....its more about its distance from commercial chart soul, than value. Yes, Eddie Parker, I'm Gone, ticks all the boxes...I'm Aware of that, but so does Love You Baby at a fraction of the price. The debate goes on and on and on. Ed
  15. My point is rare soul can be northern soul, but not all northern soul can be rare soul. I agree its a matter of opinion.... Just trying to ensure the fictitious person being educated hypothetically in what Northern Soul is.....gets the right example. Ed
  16. The thing is, that most of these listed are great stand alone soul records, even if not chart hits. So we could be describing 'rare soul' Undoubtedly they also make up the playlists at a Northern soul night BUT what northern soul records would be precluded from a 'rare soul night' Hence why I chose the flasher. Obviously it could be thousands of non rare soul records, but to define northern soul, it would really have to one of the most popular tunes. Interplay is another, or even Mr floods party is it needed to be vocal. And thats that:) Ed
  17. Obviously the flasher. Worked for me at the baileys nappy nights 75/6. Ed
  18. Its just incredible how these tracks are so good and become available. Good luck. Ed
  19. Any idea how John Anderson and / or colleagues came across the demos? Part of a job lot? Did Mr Levine get many records from Soul Bowl? I thought he did his own record searching trips over the pond. Ed
  20. Yes, one would depend on the other. Sacrilage...those Yankees don't know a good tune when they hear it. Ed
  21. You learn something new every day! Levine is probably most famous for discovering that record! Is this also the case with other red coach records, such as universal mind? I've had an issue and demo on that over the years. Something fishy going on. Ed
  22. I did not know that! Always thought....as the story went, Mr Levine heard this as a new release in the states, and brought it back to the UK. Meaning that it had a certain minor chart success in the states beforehand. I had a pink issue, and always assumed it was an original. How wrong one can be! Ed
  23. It only cost half that to see him live in las Vegas 2018....and he still knew the words:) It cost a weeks wages in 77. Must be some good jobs out there today. Ed
  24. Wow! Absolute superb list. Every one is great. 13 is the stand out track for me, followed by 16. Ed
