  1. It just goes to show, especially in the States, everything has it price. What would be the most expensive Northern Soul related item? How about 'a sample of talcum powder taken from the floor at the Torch' must be worth $99,999,999 especially if it had the image of Major Lance in it.!!!!!!! Ed
  2. Is there a link with the demise of the SWFC and the increase in certain promoters crazyness? Ed
  3. How can you tell its not a reissue? Whats on the b side, the instrumental? I bet ebay would love the sales commission if it actually sold. God knows (literally) how much the signed copy would make. Ed
  4. Just flogged the Gloria Jones single to a Marc Bolan (RIP) fan. Question. Has anyone ever played the 'RIGHT ON BROTHERS AND SISTERS' JW track? If not, they should as its a great slightly slowed down equal of IAGK. Ed
  5. Great Story. I bet any big guys called Ralph had to have it around that time, just like everyone called Gordon was deffo a Moron. It makes you wonder where these songwriters find the inspiration to pen such obscure lyrics, especially in Northern Soul records. 'Tired old ladies kissing dogs' 'Excuse me while I kiss this guy' 'Don't know where you are or where you've been, you been living a life of sin' Inspirational or what. Worse still I always sing along. Ahhhh. Ed
  6. RB HUDMAN OR HB BARNUM I READ SOMEWHERE IS ON A&M. GOOD UPTEMPO DANCER IF NOT A BIT POPPY. ED
  7. Come on then Mecca lovers, who was Ralph, in the 'Your like a Pig Ralph' line after the FB ate the whole thing. Such a contrast in music styles played there. Only went twice at the revivals around 1979/80. Ed
  8. Why do American girls have tattoos on their ankles? Scarey. Ed
  9. It costs £5 OR $9 to send an international signed for Single Record to the States. Ed
  10. I asked a similar question a few weeks ago about the total number of records that could be played and accepted by the average Northern Soul night crowd. One of my points was that as an example, John Manship lists about 20,000 NM tracks and another 6000 xover etc in his price list book. (Of which I only know about 40%) Then you have some good b sides, lp tracks, tracks after 1974, unlisted tracks like Willie Brown Get out and get it, never mind the unreleased motown and other label tapes. I read that there is only an estimated 7000 tracks ever been played at 'All Nighters'. So in answer to your original question, assuming the DJ's are brave enough to play something that may clear the floor, there could be +30,000 tracks that have never been played or if they have only a small number of followers have ever heard of them. (IMO) Ed
  11. The 25 Miles LP is quality but I could not shift it on ebay. My fave is the track 'Soul City' (Open your arms to me). Ed
  12. Thanks Jas. To be honest I think the vast majority of UK Northern Soul fans also started off in this scene by latching onto teenage fashion things like the various mod revivals, but then developed into liking the music as much as the image. What I cant understand is that if a crowd over in the States like things such as the Fife Piper and the like, how they did not search for more of the same, as we have in the UK. I read somewhere that the record 'Stepping out of the picture' was bringing more money over in the States than it does in the UK. This record is a good example of Northernesque rare soul, so if it pushes your boat out, surely the collectors who bought it must want more of the same? Amazingly, at LA 2004, Gwen Owens and her brood were flogging a few singles from her garage clear out, but there was hardly anything that matched her own style (ie Northern Soul), and She had some Beatles singles for sale. Again thanks for the insight into past and present Northern soul scene USA. Ed
  13. I know there is a thriving Northern Soul appreciation scene in various parts of the USA now, but when did the Yanks first cotton on to this underground movement. For example is there any video or cine footage of USA discos etc where our music was being played as new releases and the punters were dancing etc. I have seen clips of soul train etc, buts that mainstream. Surely there must have been something happening over there at the same time as over here. Researchers come forward now. Ed
  14. Seen these advertised on ebay at the top of the northern soul page. Ed
  15. Well you must have a captive audience as the Unity hall used to be packed in the late 70's. Buy yourself a few 'greatest hits (Northern Soul/Motown) cd's' and try that first. Any passers by who hear and recognise it will for sure come inside. To get outsiders to travel in, you would have to advertise / hire a name and take a financial risk. As an alternative why not have an open DJ night where any one can play records that they want to bring along?
  16. JIMMY ROBBINS IS ON PINK ALA AND SOUNDS LIKE OF HOPES AND DREAMS ETC REALLY STRONG VOCAL. A BIT R&B BUT MAKES YOU SIT UP A LISTEN, AND POSSIBLY DANCE. YOYO IS A POPPY DANCER. ED
  17. Worse still, Donny, another small part of Sheffield. At least we got the airport now even if we have to share its name, for those European games coming up. YEE HAA.
  18. Sorry could not resist (as a Miller for life). Saw the paper whilst on a short break there in August. Been waiting ages to lets a blade know about it. Ed
  19. There maybe too much 'Hype' to some labels. Lets hope they dont go up in 'Smoke'. The Gems issue always stood out. Ed
  20. Last caller. Have you read the newspaper 'The New York Blade'. Its not about football.
  21. A few oddball sounds I ended up with. Buddy Guy - Buddy's Groove Dizzy Gillespie - Soul Kiss Joe Cato - Im so glad Jimmy Robbins - Repossesing my love RB Hudman - Yo Yo Any of these ever got played at any soul nights? Ed
  22. Cheers Dave, I have seen a UK issue (dark blue) on perhaps Phillips or maybe Fontana. Any reader old enough to know when it first got played? Ed
  23. Yeh why not, God bless Mary Boylan too. It is rumoured that she kept 1 copy of every NS record she imported. Now that would be a good collection to get your hands on. Ed
  24. Can any reader throw some light on this brilliant instrumental (a sort of wade in the water with pianos). My copy is on French Aquarious, and I only heard it in the Four Seasons Soul Club - Scarboro around 1977 (Piss up bank holiday weekends and a forerunner to todays sofistacted events). I was told it was an old Torch newie, but never heard it since. Come forward Wise People.
  25. Thats a good last point. I remember scanning Soul Bowl lists for years to try and have an idea on prices. Then the usual 15 year wilderness period allows you to forget. Now at present, its all hell let loose on prices and this guide gives at least a quick reference point. I did the ebay UJIMA sell at £150 from a £1 Boylans (Conisbrough) buy yonks ago. Only put it up becauase the guide showed about £200. Still kicking myself at letting other go @ 1984 (Miners strike etc) Ringleaders £1, Gloria & Tiaras £5, Ronnie McNeir £20, Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. God bless Manship. Ed
