I think the Temptations DVD paints a true story of who made the money in those days, for sure it was not really the artists. Its a bit like an apprenticeship, you get paid low money until you wise up and pass the test. Gwen Owens was flogging her record collection at the LA gig 04, so not really very flush I would presume, and to make it worse the lady did not have much worth anything anyway. Still, she was a Queen for the day and made a few bucks flogging photos etc. Ed

Cleethorpes WG niters went through a phase in about 1976 where loads of these type of tunes ruled the roost. Pick me up and put me in your pocket(JH). If he were mine, Your not my kind(PD). You know like the old itv show. Some records can be identified by the first note. Examples Who who song - Jackie Wilson, Move on up Curtis Mayfield, Love you baby - Eddie Parker. Maybe some venues could try it out as an alternative to the 'best dancer' competition that may be running out of suitable candidates. Any more examples? Ed

In this day and age it could be the 'boy' who gets swapped for the labeat WDJ. As the metros sang 'in these changing times'. I wonder if the film will be more 'Full Monty' or 'Brassed off'. Ed

Wow first its was ep's, then lps, then 8 track, then tapes, then cds, now mp3s and 4s. It must be possible, if not now within the next 12 months, to put every single recognised tune that has ever been played at a soul night in the last 30 years on an ipod or lyra or the like, the size of a fag packet. 400 tracks per gig, possibly 40,000 tracks with all the northern, motown, b sides, 12"s, 70s, 80s, 90s, etc. 100 gig would swallow em all. Anybody selling such a device with all the tracks as described already on could make them a few bob. Here's hoping. Ed

In the mid 70s it was the whole package that attracted me and most of my mates. The made to measures, 30 inch bottoms, inverted pleats, individual back pocket flap designs, the long leather coats, the (commercial) music like 'out on the floor' ' the flasher', the dancing, the venues where 13 to 18 years old went (Assembly rooms Rotherham, Brickyard Mexboro etc) The adventure of going to Cleethorpes (Winter Gardens) all nighters. The atmosphere of 200 youths stomping to 'Strut in time'. It was electric, with no other scene quite offering the whole package, a way of life. Anybody who got it under the skin can never really leave it, only take the odd time outs. Long live the scene!!!!!! Ed

A couple of years ago whilst on a holiday flight to spain, the in flight entertainment had a soul tape option on the radio channels with at least 10 northern tracks on it. Clapping going off all over the plane. Ed

I think R Searling use to play 'Where Im not wanted' a few times in the same spot when he first got it. Is that why 12" discs come out to let you here the same tune over and over?? Try saving your fave tune as a ringtone on your phone, then everyone else has to also listen to it. (I have got Wanted and needed - G O, at the moment). Ed

You know, in the 70s, any 45 filling the dance floor was almost sure to get pressed. Some were justified like Bernie Williams, Gwen Owens, etc in terms of they were shit rare and great records. However some were crap anyway and not even rare. Whats your vote for the worst. Start it off with Gary Lewis - My hearts Symphony.. Ed
