  1. As somone who has over 70 Loma discs would like to join in when I get home but now can't get my CDR to work, wont let me press the record button and only instructions I can find are in Latvian!! Yours very cheesed off with technology Jock
  2. Double frustration, as well as not being able to listen to any due to PC problems I cant get the CDR to work in PC, was going to upload Sam Dees My World and 4 or 5 others I picked out, might sneak them in tomorrow if allowed. Think will take my headphones to work tomorrow to listen to some of above, look good Cheers Jock PS Tony R you are a cantankerous and controversial sod, Make Sure is no pop soul record, agree it probably woudn't make my top 20 (50!) Dells songs but thats due to the quality of their catalogue rather than the poorness of that track, Need to introduce myself at Porretta next year, hopefully that sun and wine will mellow you!!
  3. Only 1 Sam Dees so far, quite surprising!! Dont know this one, when/what is it from? Have a couple I was going to load when I get home, although no sound card so cant be sure they will work.
  4. Great record, got this from Gilly, said he didnt know much about deep but this was alright, impeccable taste as ever, just kills me
  5. I am definitely up for this though would take a couple of weeks as have just managed to sort LP's and may be having problems with my sound card, Would it be 60's or later tracks? I could do either. (Do Charly comps count ) Cheers Jock
  6. The boot has a different b-side (taking my mind or one of her other records) which is a shame as the B-Side to Sad Girl is one of my favorite ballads and had a lot to do with me discovering deep soul. Not heard about it being made for the NS, quite surprising but I suppose given the times.... So above was someone saying CA came out on orange label, never seen this, have a fair few on this label actually, Cheers Jock PS Pete you are wrong again, Sad Girl is a great record, you know you want to like it really!
  7. Seconded, another of my top 10's!!! How much does this go gor now and if its under £50 would anyone like to sell me one Thumbs up for the Bill Spoon also, seriously cheesed off cant listen to them, Great thread!
  8. No its Johnny Gilliam - Take Me Back (Modern), only ever seen demos, but assume issues exist, I am way behind on prices these days, I paid about £60 a year ago, but I also got about that when sold it about 12 years ago so not sure.
  9. Not Johnny Gilliam on Modern is it, would play it so see but singles are not in any order at moment, cmon Tony S where are, can hear it now but can't get to the chorus line!!!
  10. F******g great record, sums up my type of Northern, certainly in my top 10 (again), and cant believe its underplayed!! Certainly not when I was allowed behind decks, cmon Joan, somone like you could turn this into the semi monster it deserves. And stop putting all these midtempo sounds up I cant listen to, not fair as thats my type of record as those who know me know!!
  11. Sounds very like Pam Farish, tall girl, shortish but died deep red, mad as a hatter, but great girl. One of my very good friends towards end of Casino and more so at Rotherham etc. She was very friendly with the Morecombe crowd and used to travel a lot on her own, went out with Paul from Selby for a while, great lad with great records although rumour is he went of to be a copper! I did get in touch a few years ago, maybe 7 or so, she was living in Blackpool. working in hotel I think, she had a kid I am sure. Unfortunately dont have any contact details. We must have knew each other from back then Neil!! Cheers Jock O'Connor
  12. Were there not a couple of different nights there, ending with a modern night?? Was it not a room full of mirrors somewhere or was just that my head state there!! Had
  13. I know everyones bored of hearing this but another of these mid 80's solid £8 records for a few years then as someone above said it just dissapeared, Cant find mines and sure i didnt sell it so must have given it away as did with a few good friends in early 90;s. Ooops apart from that irrelevant info, relevant was it was covered up as Bobby Adams was it not?? Great great record.
  14. With the absolutely amazing flipside, Mr Independant, sure I mentioned this on here before to not a lot of agreement, oh well assume at least Old Ady C must have liked it at one point!! Was it ever confirmed/denied if these were the Soul Twins on Karen, seem to remember conflicting reports. Anyone remember and save me digging out the Solid Smoke album to check notes. Cheers Jock
  15. I am pretty sure I have some good pictures of this, with their silver suits?? He was amazing. Just need to find them now!! Cheers Jock
  16. I think Baz started a thread the other day, best record under £15, well this wins by miles, okay not Northern (altho I probably would have played it as ender at Allanton ) but just a great piece of fierce soul, absolutely love it. Please dont let this go unbought, somebody renew my faith in the buying public!!! Cheers Jock PS Derek as well as plugging your sales (mostly very cheap by the way) I found 2 cd's with your name on it, looks like I was supposed to send them to you (old swap?) and never did!!
  17. Thats better Pete, something we disagree about at last, makes me feel more comfortable
  18. For our 40th a couple of years ago my mate and I went over to Cape Cod to see her as she was saying it was her last tour so having been a life time ambition we thought if Aretha isnt coming to see us.... She was great, dont get me wrong there were bits where she had to sit down as she is not fit, and bits where she sung some of her 80's stuff which was a bit iffy but she also `sang almost all of her new album at that time, as she didnt want it to be a classics tour, and some of it was just sublime. She sang the track So Damn Happy (?) at the piano and blew me away her voice was like nothing I have heard live .God only knows what she would have sounded like 30 years ago. It was in a bit of a middle America venue and she finished off with Freeway To Love, which was a bit ropey and all these Stepford wives were swinging along in time and it was shaping up to be a bit of a dissapointing finish till she got up from the piano, hitched her skirt above her knees and started dancing speakeasy style like a 25 year old while singing Freeway To God with her backing singers and turning it into a gospel hollering session, its a cliche but I blubbed my little eyes out, it was truly a once in a lifetime experience. Best birthday ever by miles!!!
  19. I seen Bobby Bland a few years ago in Glasgow and have to be honest and say he was a bit dissapointing, he is just very old now and the voice, while still strong compared to some, does not do the man justice any more. Being fair it was in a huge auditorioum which is probably not the best place to see him. He was supporting Van Morrison and all these middle class w*****s were there to see Van The Man and just talked through Bobby Blands set so in protest as Van was warbling through his first bland ballad we got up and walked out right past the stage very noisily, sure we seen him looking pissed off, well not really but the thought was there!!
  20. She was on at Poretta Soul festival this year and was fantastic, there is always at least one act there that just reminds me why soul music live, when its good, is the best way to experience the music. However agree totally with Dave T too many acts, particularly the Northern ones, here just dont do themselves justice and I end up dissapointed. Thats no slight on them as many just dont sing anymore and are very old but in truth I would rather stick to the records than many of the weekender acts, I also think live performances are better appreciated outside of the all nighter environment, peoples attention seems to wander far quicker at all nighters for some reason!!
  21. Oh no I really need to get our more, I think Mr Trouble has said one of the most insightful lines on here, if not the most diplomatically put! There are some "upfront" records that from playlists on here seem to have been played continously for the last 20 years, generally those of high value. From stuff I read on here it certainly does appear that there are far more big rarities overplayed at big events than the safe oldies these days, although obviously different case at the 3000 soul nights that seem to be on every week if you read the events posting. My armchair suddenly seems not such a bad place!
  22. From about January 1979 to about 1994 I would say, cant speak personally for earlier but on reading books I would also say thats what it was about late 60's to early 70's also! Jock PS Just remember your PM,. I am crap with them so will reply in next day or so !
  23. I thought that was on label called She Devil also. although since it is probably the worst piece of music ever to carry the name Northern Soul ever, I may well have blocked the real label from memory. Mr Barnfather WTF were you doing with that record!!! I thought Curtis was post Wigan too, certainly a monster at Clifton Hall for those noisy F******s the Preston Street Dancers (where are they now?) to go mad too. I still really like this record, proper Disco Northern (sorry Baz !) Re Steve J post, Cheryl Berdell was covered as Esther Williams initially. Cheers Jock
  24. How much does a US white demo of this go for? Woudn't mind a framed one for wall if reasonable!! Used to play this as ender at Allanton regularly, and played at 100 club if i remember rightly, possibly always in my all time top 10 of any genre!! Pass the hankies!! Cheers Jock
  25. Looks really interesting Mike, I have a few CD's on this German label, some just straight deep soul but a couple of CD's with socially conscious songs from 70's mostly, and great sleeve notes. Good website as well, showing it as a really interesting, if a little diverse, label This looks interesting, although the UK supplier website isn't too easy to find details of how to buy!! When it said it was using "Afroamerican Prison Music from Blues to HipHop" as source thought this may be book but can't find any details other than article in socialist worker!! Cheers Jock
