  1. Seemingly its from a forthcoming Levine CD, details on Southern Soul forum, Betty's husband passed a comment on it there, not sure its an issue that meets their approval! Always trust the Chunky's taste, its normally impeccable!
  2. Very good lateral thinking Gene, on EMS a chap who has just done tv show with Larry Saunders in Holland (true honestly) said the re-issue was done by Mr Wiggles, and looks like him and Larry are no longer friends therefore my assumption re artists being paid may not be correct. However your connection was spot on! Cheers Jock
  3. What a strange extra track to include on the CD then. Not that I am complaining, even though I have the 45 twice (on different labels obviously, or at least think I still have) its one of those goosebump tracks. So then whats the connection between Larry saunders and Oscar Wright then, anyone?
  4. Does the LP have Oscar Wright Leave Me Alone on it? Re the 2 tracks, if you like a little more than Northern, e.g. deep its actually a pretty decent all round album.
  5. Hear hear Ken, well said young man!
  6. Or you can buy the reissue on cdbaby.com from what looks like original company for $12. If you are buying for djing purposes (as everybody is these days ) think there is one on ebay buy it now for $172, the race is on!
  7. Larry Saunders - Free Angela - yes that album but re-issued on CD (hopefully by the original dudes!) and available on cdbaby.com, most will be familiar from the original LP with the rare Dickie Wonder and Little Tommy but also a couple of great Curtis Mayfield influenced tracks by Larry himself and some great political soul from Mr Wiggles/Larry and bizarrely Oscar Wright - Leave Me Alone, is that on original album?? Not advocating the DJ's rush out for their playlists but if like me you dont care how you hear great music in the comfort of your own gin soaked armchair, then buy this and hopefully put a few bob in some deserving soul mans pocket. Cheers Jock PS promise no more Amy Winehouse quips, being the one that started the original heckling I must admit I have not even heard her album, which I will try and rectify, for free if possible!!!
  8. I am too old and tired mate, thats why my call to arms is to people like you, just suggesting sometimes its easier to start a revolution from within and harness small desires etc and build from there , sure it must be out there, although to be honest think its a far bigger challenge than ever! If i did start it I would just forget to turn up!! I still intend to visit Basics sometime as I actually played some of your post 1958 tunes that I seen playlisted before we knew what R&B was! Off to bed!
  9. I sort of remember it!! And certainly the time you brought a couple of cars before it and my flat had nearly 50 people in it!! Good memories of meeting guys like you, Kev and Gaz, Alan C, the Belshill boys, many more. I think we had the same ethos about music and life. I loved djing there and am humbled people still remember things like Larry Laster and Tears being played there, could not only get away with things like that you were expected to play them and others like them, different times indeed. And dont forget many guys like Andy Whitmore, finally becoming the Butch of the Crossover world, Rob Marriot etc were djing at Shotts in the early stages of their superstar careers! Yes Ady was the man, many records I played were tipped by him as he was always a reluctant dj so I got the credit but he was the brains many times (I was obviously the beauty however ). He is in Australia now and happily married. Was out with Alan/Steve recently and hope to see a lot more of Steve next year, one of the top men up here. Great great memories, going to night Kirsty mentions in a Pink Elephant suit trying to wind people up and doing my own head in, fancy dress with Adys clothes that he still wore, Pete Lawson going Crab Fishing, and Joan Pete etc making friends with my neighbours who normally shot anyone not from the area. WTF said chinstrokers couldn't have fun, think I made many lifetime friends at that time, including yourselves hopefully. Musically unbeatable for me but that was as it was our local, and it felt like a community event. Although nobody should underestimate the hard work put in by the team of promoters over number of years to establish a nighter in Scotland that attracted travellers from down South. All great guys, John Neilson, Brian "Barney" Welsh (R.I.P.) and Jim O'Hara especially who probably took it up a notch musically towards the end of its time. Yes good times, look away Dundee Davie, but once you get a bit older or wiser you may find a little nostalgia harnessed correctly feeds a lot of change, and may actually be what you need for your revolution to really happen! A good night for reflection I think, Cheers Jock
  10. Right guys am on the case, started tonight, went down the USB turntable route and wish I had bought another CDR as its more manual than would have thought!! Will finish in next couple of nights and get them done over weekend and out for Monday (assuming its as easy to record these WAV files onto CDR as the Numark instructions say ). Tracks recorded tonight David Ruffin - Pieces of A Man. Innez Fox - You're Saving Me For A Rainy Day Kim Tolliver - Learn To Get Along Without You Love Piece & Happiness - You've Chosen Me Honey Cone - A Womans Prayer Kim Weston - Love Dont Let Me Down. Rest of CD to come from Whispers, Townsend Townsend & Rogers,Archie Bell, Freddie Hughes, Edwin & Blinky, Main Ingredient, Ascots, Paterson Singers, James & Bobby Purify,Mike Jemison, Baby Washington/Don Gardner, Clarence Reid twice, Jimmy Hughes, Bettye Swan and since its became bit of an early 70's fest an Ozone track to make it more "modern" Obviously final one will depend on space, so far a bit of a slow fest so will try and pace it up slightly, although may use this as audition tape for that famous Yarmouth Downbeat lounge I have yet to experience Okay, off to kip for tonight, hope above is okay. Cheers Jock
  11. Me too, sad as f**k, not seem him for a long long time but always got on with him when I did, and as people have said he knew his music!! Too many from those days going! Jock
  12. Stuff by here on Backbeat is great but by no means a Northern record, great vocals though. Once have worked out my new turntable will try this new fangled MP3 thingy to put up here!! Jock
  13. Me I am afraid, although I did say it would take me a few weeks. My CDR just seems to have died so have gone out and bought one of these USB turntables so will get to it this weekend, I too have had to put a few back on the shelves on receiving the CD's, teach me to be a coos tail again!! Cheers Jock
  14. It depends how you define dancers but am putting 2 tracks from this on my CD swap including an amazing version of Everlasting Love!! Maybe not Northern but just a great great soul album by someone at the pinnacle of his powers! Cheers Jock
  15. No defe not but a great record which I finally got today thanks to a wonderful service from Mr Smith (Pete not Denzel Washington that is), better known for the other side but I think this is a side that never really got any attention. Cheers Jock
  16. Me too if thats allowed.Have only heard this about 3 times Has anyone actually seen 45 of this? Assume its locked up in the Barker/Brown residences at Todmorden but have never seen one, sure Mr Dyson, has one (as you would expect!) Great great 45. Its also re-recorded on LP which features Lorraine Chandler, if you had never heard 45 the LP version would qualify as a great piece of deep soul but it fades in comparison with the 45 version
  17. Ahhh forgot your last PM, never got time to give it the answer it desrved but this is what i was getting at on my last rant at you. The above completely contradicts what you say in the soulful house thread, again, which is also as usual contradictory and utter tosh!! You really are very funny, unfortunately dont have time to debate both threads together, hopefully later so you will see I am not just picking on you! Jock
  18. Hi Guys, apologies just getting to this now, no surprise to anyone that knows me though!! Slight technological hitch, cant get the CDR to work and have lost instructions, its just one of the Phillips CDR's, tried to press red button for REC, I thought that was all had to do. Anyone with one of these machines able to help?? CD is turning out to be 70's crossover type thing after seeing some of the tracklists, only managed to listen to Drews so far and liking it a lot, are we going to do feedback on favorite tracks like we did once before, nothing like a bunch of amatuar critics spouting their wisdom (or otherwise) to give the readers something to chortle over!! Have been searching discogs to try and make sure LP only so hope I called them right, Cheers Jock
  19. Aww now you do it just as I am leaving work (hence grumpy mood coz | am still here) and I have no sound card at home, big tease you are!!! Hope you are well and give my love to the other half, the scary one. Have been buying loads of jazz if you fancy some more cd's! See you soon I hope! Jock
  20. I would suggest if you google their name rather than "best unkown I have never heard" you will find that they are facts not opinions, or at least the DJ/Collector definitions are!
  21. A DJ is Tony Humphries, compare and contrast to Kenny Dope Gonzalez a collector.... Not sure if thats what you are after. I would suggest that the 44 million dj's/collectors currently on the Northern Soul scene fit somewhere between the above in exact definitions! Maybe the 2 non dj's on the Northern scene can decide.
  22. Hmm just realised all these are my type of song, maybe I am a miserable ba****d after all!! How about one that keeps getting revisited, 4 Tops _ Ask The Lonely especially as its crescendo builds "Just ask the lonely, just ask meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee ..... Im the lonliest one you'll seeeeeeeeee" paraphrasing slightly as taking from memory, can feel a blubber coming on. The more we discuss this the more I think this is the greatest piece of recorded music ever! Jock
  23. I can do the Lights Out side as I have on CD somewhere, will look it out tomorrow if noone beats me to it. I might have the other side (which is a dancer not deep) on my old laptop, if not cant do as cant get my bloody CDR machine working, will do it tomorrow Cheers Jock
  24. Agreed, great record, think its on one of DG deep soul cd's, the other side is a great dancer too, well worthy of spins for someone out there! Cheers Jock
  25. Good lad Mick, last time I seen him was last Southport we all went a good few years ago. think Mr Salter who is on here sometimes may still be in contact Pete Shirley another top lad, again think Robin may still be in touch. And I think the Dance Scene you so quaintly refer to was just the Modern Soul scene of its time (another thread maybe!!) to some of us Cheers Jock
