I would add Kitch to that list as well. Sadly underused these days it would seem. Although havent heard all of them it is quite an impressive list.

F*****g h**l, almost word for word what I have been thinking but not bothered saying!! Spot on about the one major venue, means big discoveries can be played regularly, although whether there are enough now is another question, although methinks between people like Andy Dyson and Butch there are enough to start with!! If you look at posts here it is almost always people talking about their soul night or their records they are playing, I dont think that has anything to do with creating a healthy scene! Especially spot on about NS becoming the new local Social Clubs for middle age people (of which I am one before the usual diggers start), what no-one seems to even consider now is that there appears to be no single Northern Scene now, there are millions of local scenes, based around soul nights, that cater for less than millions of people! Surely a NS scene would have to be built around all nighters to get the right environment for new sounds. I agree that the incessant desire to DJ/Promote means too many nights but also too many people chasing the likes of Deep Dark Secret to play to their local gatherings all around the country, as their audience is unlikely to be looking to hear a night of new cover ups!! Only disagreement I have is about it being local to you but thats possibly because you live in the right area, I spent a number of years wanting to live near Bolton as every new all nighter that sprung up to replace the last one was only half an hour away, I soon recovered! In reality the above scenario would result in a few hundred hard core being the regulars, as was all the way through the 80's/early 90's. Would people do that every weekend now, in all honesty I wouldn't hence why I normally dont get into these debates but there seems to be that hardcore that travel out there, the difficulty is getting them in the same place every weekend/fortnight, where a number of Dj's are plugging big sounds. Probably just a pipe dream but nostalgia does that to you when you get to my stage of life.................

That is sad, YGLMB was one of my early favorites as a young lad. Talented and beautiful lady. Jock

Cheers Mr Byrne, you are a hero as I cant listen at home so will have a listen at work tomorrow. Hope you are well and look forward to seeing you next Saturday. Jock

Its Just Got To Be That Way - bobby Angelle - money 14236 refosoul Surely his best and one of the best on the label, Butch span this a few times in 80's. at that time he thought this a pretty rare record. Just proper Northern Soul to me. Need some DJ to play it (JJ???). And I hope someone bought Kermacks copy at that bargain price, if not shed your sheepskin and go and look for this!!Hopefully more from me later but have to record them first!

Thanks for that but cant listen to anything on computer at moment, will keep searching for WFB 45!!

Spot on, its on his Running Water album, an absolutely fantastic album, with 4 or 5 great tracks, vastly underrated as singer in my opinion Mr Reid, and one of Florida's giants surely. The other Lew Kirton track Chalky mentions, Come On With It is also done by Clarence Ried, although think LK version shades it slightly, on the On The Job LP which also contains the vastly superior version of Willie & Barbara Sleep With Me. His 1st album contains a great version of I've Been Trying, but this is probably too early (late 60's) to qulify as a Florida sound record and it has a number of covers on it (Motown and the dreaded Beetles (sic)). Cheers Jock

Hi there, does anyone have an email for a Henrik from Stockholm, he was on here under ID Cornelius but doesn't seem to have been around for a while, either email or phone no would do,. Many thanks. Jock

So are we now agreeing they are different versions, seem to remember that last year we debated this and the majority view, although not mine as always felt BC vocals were better, were they were identical. Ironically finally got Buddy Connor last year (thanks to that nice man Dan, despite our political differences ) but cant find WFB to compare, f**k knows where I have managed to file it!! Cheers Jocjm

Thats the one, and the immortal chorus's of "My Baby's A Man" & "Jocko Jocko your the king" Must dig it out, not sure I ever got the 12" so dont know if its significantly different.

Other side of Trusting Heart, (on UK PIR I have it) is Down Three Dark Streets and is fantastic deep soul, did this ever come out on US PIR, or only Golden Fleece?

Gareth/Paul I had heard about the Amsterdam find, a chap from EMS was supposed to get me list but never did. Didnt know about Berwick St, might be in London for a couple of days mid week and might go down for a scout, believe its quite good around there for LP's also at moment. Not been record hunting in London for a good few years now!! Thanks for info both of you. Cheers Jock

How many wrong assumptions can you make in one day. (a) I am not a Modern fan, I am a soul fan. I currently buy about 80% new soul music due to a number of reasons, not least I like hearing new music to me of any era and new music made currently is easier to access and a damn sight cheaper than trying to buy the new 60's I hear. ( b ) I have a reasonable sized collection of which 75% is 60's Northern/Deep soul on original vinyl or, shock horror the occasional reissue CD or LP. However whenever I DJ in my record room its OVO only so I know the rules. (c )I rarely go out but next planned out is Lifeline weekender, where I will hardly be standing at the side moaning about not enough modern, I know what I expect there and I know what I will get, mostly good unknown 60's/70's which is what I want for that weekend. Its highly likely a majority of my outings this year will be around Northern do's so my views are hardly that of the Modern Crew, most of who have been silent so far on here. (d) Its tired because its been going on for most of my nearly 30 years around the scene, if the Northern nights arent to your approval any more dont go or do your own (on second thoughts maybe that one is a little overdone at moment!) I am on holiday so have too much time on my hands, should know better than to get involved, but seriously now (my blog above was attempt at slight irony on so much emphasis being put on my views when I dont go to any of said events) but Pedros question was about the type of Modern Soul being played at MODERN SOUL VENUES, so therefore could not and still cannot see the relevance of your statement to this thread, although I accept it is very relevant to what do people play at one of the 3000 NORTHERN SOUL nights on every weekend presently, however do you not think that is a different thread? Pedro again sorry for hijacking this, still waiting on debate from the Modern Soul Crew, seems to awful quiet on the actual question asked on the thread!! Last from me honest Jock

Cant disagree with your logic there, particularly your *, of which I am not just in case you were wondering. And as I say I like the instr in its own right. I think I like messy records, and especially the horn intro (is that on the instr?, years since I heard it), as I am a messy dancer they arent too great a challenge ! Just listening to CD with the vocal on repeat here and forgot how great a singer he is, what a growler, and what bongos on YYD! Amazing piece of music, Now on track Bad Girl, f**K I have this on 45 and dont remember it sounding this good!! Apologies for hikacking the thread, think I need to post on this CD separately as its awesome!! Last question honest, how much does vocal on Minit of YYD go for, never seemed to go up much in price, could be tempted at right price!! Cheers Jock PS James 3rd time I agreed with you recently, may have to reply to your PM on RSF of a year ago and say I was wrong, f**k that would hurt

Searling played this instrumental version out at some time in distant past too did he not Gareth? James Not sure how you could ever say that is better than the vocal in any soul world, sorry, but I do like the inst version in its own right. Re the Herman Hitson LSTMF, I have the CD but not sure how to get a CD track to MP3 and on here, Pete any tips? I tried yesterday burning via WMP and then importing to Audacity as Raw Data and then exporting as MP3 but they didnt seem to work, is there an easier way to burn from CD to MP3 format (PM if people are bored of the repeated question!!)

Aww Mel, thought we had kissed and made up, dont tell me it was all one way And actually since you mention it should say my user name is actually taken from the very dj/rapper you talk about. For those not in the know there is a great Philly single by Jocko (was he not a famous Philly DJ) called Rythm Talk (I think), to the backing of McFadden and Whitehead Aint No Stopping Us Now he raps all over with the maddest lyrics you could imagine (seriously mad, would have to go over it again) think there is a 7" version and a different 12" version (which is very relevant if you listen to the lyrics). In my early days of collecting I picked this up blind and due to my name it became my signature tune, especially the bit in the middle where he repeats something like Jocko Your The King, even had it on my answer machine for a while in my younger, more cocky days. Must go and dig it out. Now has anyone seen a WD of this, would be great for framing for wall of record room, would probaly pay about £3.50 for that one!! Cheers Jock "Jocko" O'Connor
-
Huge unresereved apologies. I thought your laughing comments were directed at people chasing the Philly WD's now when you were chasing them in 70's, I didnt get the vinyl vs styrene part, dangers of always assuming the worst of people, so again I apologise. Your views and anecdotes are great, thats why I was a little dissapointed when I thought you were mocking, my bad interpretation obviously. I love informed and correct anecdotes and views from the past so dont let my slight strop put you off. Would still be good to put a name to virtual id though, as I said its easier to discuss. Once again apologies Cheers Jock O'Connor

That was my understanding too Paul, there is another album with proper cover and Jessie James on front in his red hat, this is earlier LP on TTED with I Can Do Bad By Myself and others from that period (1980's?) Can check it out later if anyone needs to know. And as we have started Jessie has a new CD out on his own label, with a re-cut (or very similar lyrics) to ICDBBM, its a bit of a patchy CD, but has 2 great ballads worth the £12 on their own, and a reasonable dancer thats easy on the ears, and probably okay on the feet as well. Can post details later if anyone interested
-
Why do you have to laugh. Explain a bit further? You are obviously well informed, if a little full of self importance, a real name would probably help people understand your views better, as already a few wild guesses have been out there about your identity! Its nice to know who you are being mocked by.

Thats not the argument this chap is trying to makem FFS why is everyone getting so hung up on the Modern (or not Modern in this case as usual) vs Northern, read the guys posts! And the above argument is more than a little tired even when relevant to the thread! I have nothing to add to topic, for benefit of SoullessGirl, as currently dont actually attend NW venues, but since 80% of music I currently buy, which is quite a lot, was made post 1996 I am interested in the debate, particularly as have a penchant for soulful house which is a big part of what the deabte seems to be about, so now please go away. Pedro welcome to the mad but informative world that is Soul Source, not everyone is quite as unfriendly as our colleauge quoted above!

I am surprised you didnt say the 60's midtempo thread there Roger!! Oh well I need to put Arnold Jarvis, MR ALI, Barbara Tucker (pt2) Ultra Nate, Elements of Life Roy Davis Jnr, Dennis Ferrer (2 other tracks) and about 5 others back on hold till I sort out whatever the hell is happening to my PC, Just need to have another one in a few weeks Martin! Cheers Jock PS How about this Philly International monday and then people can hear the history of soulful house! PPS Can I delete the sound clips from above then since I assume we dont want them in RefroSoul library

Double post again - are other people getting funny reactions from site at moment? Computer reactions rather than disagreeable viewpoints I should say I am meaning!

Hate to pick on an easy target but look at his initial statment, he is talking about music from 1996 to 2006, stop acting your shoe size and let people have a sensible debate.
