  1. Manchester venue, biggish venue I thought, and SAS event run by Searling and Bernie Golding, to a very small crowd. I remember it as with Dave W turning up with almost a whole spot full, it was a nighter after a jazz funk dayer, and there was more jazz funk people there than the Northern crowd! Very little dance floor reaction, including myself. I didn't know anyone there, probably very early Stafford if at all, before Dave took it over and before I went, and end of Clifton Hall time period. Was going to a few SaS events then. I remember getting excited as one of the big sounds I thought was called Jealousy, went home all excited robbed Carlena Weaver off a mate for about a quid and got home to realise wrong record, and then remembered the one I had heard was called Suspicion not Jealousy. Karma was returned years later when I found out the Carlena Weaver was a bootleg! However Mr Shard can't remember this do, so to be fair he probably knows more than me and this may have been a symptom of me going out a lot then and getting mixed up. Anyone else remember this, save my sanity?
  2. J.J. Barnes first was it not, not sure if it was first wave of tapes, but pretty soon after if not. We just need that comedy duo, Soul Sources equivalent of Only Fools etc, , Robb Del-Boy K and Rodney Shard to confirm I suspect.
  3. Thinking of Jon and family today, xxx
  4. I am happy to deliver it, I would even buy one to give to her if you arrange the meet! Would be nice to say how much one of my heroes means to me when they are still alive! Okay I have now just bought it, should sit nicely with my Wilson Picket box set finally bought and about 8 Kent CD's just waiting on the holiday to listen them to. It really is a great time for retrospective music output!
  5. Are they different, I was about to offer my 45 for sale. cheap, but if its noticeable different from LP the law says I must keep it!
  6. I think the 70's is now in the nostalgia scene timescale, with better music and less bad dress admittedly, but generally most venues and particularly weekenders its massive anthems, Charles Johnson etc etc , although there are still some people fighting against the tide. I suspect the 70's bit is going to get worse as an element of 60's only seem to now see that as progression, even though they only want records that have been played consistently since the early Southports, and some even earlier such as Charles Johnson, Phillip Mitchell etc. The 80's, particularly the first half of the decade, however has legs and interestingly its the one Europe seems to be mining deep at the moment, Lars B, the Scandinavian crew, and of course Butch leading the way for them along with people like Dave Rippoles, Malayka, Mr Thorley etc etc.. Some great music and some rare records in there, I understand why the 80's is not for everyone but places like Bamberg show how good it is when done right, and when mixed in. Its the one last thing that gets me excited long term, other than early 90's house but I really don't want to to hear that at a soul venue, sorry!
  7. I did play it once or twice back in the day, but even then dancers were looking confused at the tempo and vocals not quite fitting together, just like I like them, a bit quirky and amazing vocals from the reverend. On topic, I suppose the Ballads on Music City may be the latest for the rise and fall in price, although I suspect a certain dealer may still have enought to stop it rising too far, more Ace Spectrum like than Wade Flemons I suspect. And its not even the best version, have I said that before......
  8. Just seen this, and what an enjoyable night. Colin has to virtually drag me out to soul nights now, too many just don't deliver for anymore, other than sometimes socially. But this was a top night, good crowd in, a fair percentage of dancers, and great crowd of guys enthusiastic to chat about muisc, the lads running it, Paul A's hospitality and just generally good people. Fair enjoyed myself, sure we will be back, and I genuinely rarely say that these days!
  9. Okay, well I have all 3 of these, so can someone tip me when they are at their peak and sales here I come I have done well over last few years with things just lying around, but its getting it right, and these are things that I have had for years. Buying just to predict the next big thing is fraught with danger, hence why you see so many bald dj's, having pulled thier hair out once they have listened to the next big thing more closely, oops! However, when you do find that next big thing, thats when all the ballache of the hunt is worth it, x 1000000. Better than sex. I do miss that (the hunt, not the ballache or the sex, just to be clear!)
  10. A genius. Live he was unbeatable, and a lesson in the life of soul every time on stage. Just too sad. But he lived, and in recent times he seemed to have some of his fervour back, although obviously hampered by his health. Last year in Glasgow the last 20 seconds of Harry Hippy was life affirming. Proper soul man. I said that night was my goodbye to him, how true. A legend like no other. RIP XXXX
  11. What is the details on this, I thought he just did the one for Contempo which was all new material and was later than 1975? Curious from Edinburgh. Forget this, I just googled it on DIscogs, not sure I ever knew that existed, very nice https://www.discogs.com/J-J-Barnes-The-Groovesville-Masters/release/5143226
  12. BSide is fantastic, and the side I put on CD's, whenever I get round to doing them. I agree its not worth much but you never used to see it that much. Hopefully because people of taste snuggle it nightly before placing it softly on the shelf.
  13. Every minute on a Wednesday after 5........
  14. Okay Mike, will sort it out in morning. Cheers
  15. That was the October one, the September was the original last night, no live act. They hastily rearranged the October one as Wigan Tiffanies was on with Searling, 40 DJ's and 25 punters. but it was the start of things to come. Casino was just a fond memory by the end of the October Tiffanies all-nighter.
  16. HI Mike, like the others above I missed this, so if you were putting a balance to a relevant charity I would like to contribute. Apologies for extra hassle, great job on this.
  17. Too true. Got even more into it and had even more fun as loads of deadwood were shaken off, oldies all-nighters and Mr M's, were consigned to their place in history and it became a Northern Soul scene for immature grown ups, at least for a while.
  18. Just too sad. His name should be remembered for the recognition he gave to artists and his tireless quest to record the history of my beloved music. And he thought Northern Soul people were "quaint" so he was obviously perceptive :- ) RIP Jock
  19. C'mon use some of that big bonus everyone knows every London banker gets And edited. I was over excited!
  20. Okay, maybe one more, my favourite double sider of all time by one of my favourite singers, introduced to me by Richard Gilbert many years ago and stil love it as much. It really doesn't get any better. Steve Mancha - Don't Make Me A Storyteller Listen to the bassline, the side for me I Won't Love You And Leave You
  21. Okay last one, I could be here a while. Written by the brothers of Soul and produced by one of the Daddies, it couldn't go wrong. Superb version Dramatics - Beautiful Feeling.
  22. And some things are viewed as classic for a reason. Remember Southport The Dramatics - In The Rain
  23. And still probably one of my fgavourite JT tracks, on all my early 70 tapes back in the day. I love the arrangement I love to make love when its raining
  24. This is actually the best version but the sound clip is crap. Must try and record this later The genuis that is Johnnie Taylor guided by the genius that is Don Davis https://youtu.be/PhnRNypXbLw
