  1. Its Jock, Colin' s mate, assume thats Tony Free, we met some time ago at Tim Browns and in Sheffield, sure I still have a 12" you did no?
  2. Not sure how true that is Mikey, thought they all went, ask Dean Anderson this week as he travels to Man U games with him stil I think (great taste in music but....... ) And to stop myself looking like a Butch groupie I will finish this off by saying he has got smelly feet and crap taste in cars.......... Anyone see me getting beaten around the head by Butch at the weekend tell him I was only joking!
  3. Totally agree Sean, my favorite all time DJ is a house DJ from London, probably a devil to many on here, but the original question was about rare soul DJ's reputation and as such I think is really about the nighter scene, which I think is a totally different beast from a soul night DJ. Hence why not sure also James re your debate on other scenes, if its general DJ;s with one offs sure there are a number of radio one DJ's that would fit that description
  4. I think you are missing the point on this though James, absolutely right any DJ should only be talked about because of his latest 23 records, however what people are saying the collection gathered with good taste sets Butch years ahead of the game, would suggest Andy Dyson is the only one close in DJing stakes (DJing not collecting, as think these are starting to get confused in some arguments) and again thats because of his taste and breadth of collection. However I am not saying by any means anyone with a great collection is automatically a great DJ (shut up at the back, I know I am setting myself up for a good slagging here )
  5. Thats nothing to do with the scenario we are talking about, thats a very different point to what I was saying about Butch, I am talking about a DJ at top of his game still scrapping for every record possible to play out despite him having more unknown classics (if you know what I mean) waiting to be heard. Thats very different from the average collector scenario (and unfortunately the top 500 scenario is so common it means there are many average collectors ) you are talking about, personally I will show you the 100 or so records that have arrived on my doorstep in the last 3 months and most are lucky to scrape into the top 50000, except in my head where they are the top sounds ever, till the next 100, totally understand that, unlike my other half!
  6. We must have frequented the same places mate!! Ooh woudn't say the Gardening Club was less soulful, Chris the Rythm Doctor and Evil Olive like a groove certainly but they always had lots of the soulful stuff, one of my favorite clubs ever that. Venus slightly different, not bad music (except when Jeremy T**T Healy was on) but less of the soulful stuff I agree, and more of the hairy transvestites, very offputting when you are trying to gurn freely!! Remember Tony Humphries opening night at MOS when he moved here, played about 9 hours, real across the board of black music (well no Northern but I forgave him) absolutely awesome, shame he was playing crap prog house by the time he went home. Great memories!!
  7. I think you are being a bit harsh here on 2 counts, many of these rare records Butch has had long before they were either "rare" or in-demand, and I think often people get these 2 descriptions confused. Thats a taste thing, its only really becoming apparent now how Butch not only has probably the best taste around (after me and TFK obviously) but his taste was way ahead of the game, and so many people are playing catch up now. Secondly Butch has being doing this for far more years more than people give him credit for, I was in States in early 80's as a young know nothing whippersnapper and nearly every place I went to had been raped by Mr Dobson and Mr Ashibende including one place that had 25/50/100 count boxes of various records now deemed as rare, only things I can remember are Doug Banks on Guyden and O'Jays on Imperial but there were loads, I should say that the boxes were there but most were empty or had the odd copy left. Given that scale and length of digging then Butch is bound to have most records that people turn up, I think its easy however to gloss over how much work he has put in here to get where he is however. Again I think you are being harsh here, often the records are only being talked about is because Butch is playing it, not the other way round, again this is a taste thing. Butch has the ear for this, far greater than any other person on the scene. he is by far a leader and not a follower, which sad to say is almost unique now. I agree with you here, and that is where I think Butch takes most credit these days, if I had a 10th of his collection (100th even?) I dont think I would ever buy another record, just live off the land. However I think this is where Butch shows he is top of the game, if he doesnt have it and its good enough he still wants it and he wants to expose it, seems to be no ego around it other than he wants to have the best records available, and his taste on this is normally again beyond question. This to me not only makes him no 1. now but probably by far no.1 rare soul dj of any time, and unlikely to be beaten. Hmms sounds a bit sooky above but hey it might give me discount from him this weekend........... maybe not time to get real!!
  8. Keep forgetting about Wilkipedia, learn something every day on this site. On the recommendation of Mr Sweeney above have just sent away to the very reliable Dusty Groove for copy of the album so looking forward to that!
  9. I think thats a good point, I do think she was a good observor of youth culture in her day, but like most of us she is getting older and maybe needs to let go. Still say it emphasises just why almost all media culture is bad. Very few people will ever get it right, would suggest Ms Constantine is probably our best hope of potraying our culture correctly, so fingers crossed that gets done.
  10. Agreed its a great film, only word of caution though is its based on Otis Williams book which I thought was very poorly written and very obviously one sided making him out to be a saint that other commentators have disputed. He was not kind to Edwards or Ruffins repuation which again depending on who you listen to he was a bit harsh on them because they didnt rate him. However a decent fictional representation of one of the worlds greatest groups that was blessed to have two of the worlds greatest singers as members, not many can say that!!
  11. Back to the original question though did C Mcall not always write under his proper name (Mr Dollinson) rather than McCall so not sure we have correct writer, any chance of soundclip as I like a little leftfield (only have RC reissue CD so doubt it is on that) Cheers Jock
  12. One of them went through for about £125, I forgot to check back on it, other one was about the £175 mark as stupidly I had bid on that (and lost thanks to my continuing tight Scots personality) but forgot to keep an eye on the cheaper one Doh! Are you or Micheal going to Cleethorpes, hopefully should have a reasonable number of CD's for you lovely people! Cheers Jock O'Connor PS Chris if you are thinking of selling it give me a shout, PM of course
  13. Whats that on Simon? IS that the Max Kidd one? He did one on ICA which is okay and was he not JG Lewis on IX Chains also with 2 great records. Well done Pete, I think its well worth that, although wasnt sure if it was the kind of record that everyone raves about but doesnt buy! Makes my £50 for a VG one seem a bargain now!!
  14. Funny I just got one this week after been after it for almost 20 years, its only VG and has a few crackles on both sides but given the very cheap price it was well worth it, Have played it about 100 times already. As Pete says i think this is a pretty rare record, maybe too good for todays market???
  15. Any chance of a sound clip of the CB Mr Jack as big fan of his, let me know if you are selling it (once I hear it obviously )
  16. Any chance of you letting me know what flib side of the Bart Jackson on Decca is...... please
  17. It was also on a free Mojo magazine CD I think, one with the Southern Soul issue?? Will check later/
  18. Okay guys, turntable now fixed and have Monday/Tuesday holiday with me and my record room as company so will get them done and out by COB Tuesday, sure you wont be surprised at me being last but trust me that causes difficulties as quite a few I had thought of have already appeared, need to get my caps on. Only listened to a couple Andy Manns (many times, great stuff, we have very similar taste I think) and Big Bad Bully Boy's, half way through and the top record so far goes to Bully's Percy Sledge, very unexpected from that artist. Tuuunnnne Okay off to get my silver hotpants out Wardrobe for Birmingham A&S gig! © V Challoner
  19. I think Andy Dyson has a lot of info on them, there is also an article within the lastest Wax Poetics magazine (great mag, but quite eclectic, covers very wide area of Black Music) Short part is they are a couple from Bufallo and sadly the Bob turned into a poor mans Rick James in later life (bobby Nunn) Go buy mag, worth the £8! Cheers Jock
  20. Hmm. not sure I agree with that, or at least its a bit harsh. Her early writing I thought was pretty good, and although I agree her depth of knowledge did not match the experts (should/can a journalist ever be an expert on everything they write about?). I used to always think she at least was young enough to not only understand the youth culture she was writing about, unlike most other observers (clubland stuff here I mean) she was also living the lifestyle and therefore had a bit more right to comment. Certainly some of her more mature writing, on other than music, has shown signs of talent I would suggest. However that was then, looks like she has joined in the easier to guess than find out brigade of journalism in this case, however I think the more interesting point here is who cares, do we really even care what the Observer says, oh yes thats right we do., How many people moaning about her coverage voted media coverage would be a good thing in recent poll!! Ms Sawyer sums up why it is not far better than anyone in that debate did. Cant wait for my fish and chips tomorrow!!
  21. First 2 and Fonda Rae being recored as we speak, cant find Intrigue though, what label was it on? Pete S maybe better if you dont listen, it may send you running for the beer!!
  22. Okay, update is only James Conwell, Roosevelt Grier and Drapers gone, rest are going up in ebay in next few days so if you fancy any get back to me asap. Cheers Jock
  23. Just seen this, wasnt ignoring it, Agree with what you are saying to a certain extent, and people would be foolish to ignore what people like yourself say re prices, however there is ways to go about it, certainly not like above, and more importantly I am sure people like yourself would make sure of your facts before you go shouting like above wouldnt you!!
  24. I have that on a 12", funny enough Sean was going to put the other side of that, It Feels So Good, on the cd swap, I prefer that side but like both sides. YNMYW may be a bit too electrified for some. ANyone got a discogrpaphy of the man anywhere to hand?
  25. Any chance of sound clips of the Bobby Mclure Cedric stuff, like most of his stuff, 60's to 80's but never heard them Cheers Jock
