Whats Your Most Sick Of Hearing Or Hated! Overplayed Oldie
jocko replied to a topic in All About the SOUL
This makes me laugh, what you forgot Simon to add is it also often thrown at people who dare to comment when a record with no remote relation to soul is included in that genre, or the worse type of Northern is praised "because it fills the dance floor", but Simon's description, of people who care, put it in perspective. As one who in my early days on here was often accused of being a member I would counter its often a tired and innefective insult doled out by people with little confidence in their own taste, by the sheep who want all the same records they heard in 1973/1983/1993 [delete whichever is not the year they first went to a do], by people who have returned to the scene after an excess of 20 years absence and seem to take offense when people show their knowledge or dont want to hear the same records as them as they have been played constantly over those 20 years, or people who just generally dont get the ethos of the rare soul scene and prefer their local soul nights for local people which they just happen to DJ at.Oh and they always say they were only joking afterwards.****** Matt your's is the funniest, I think you are really meaning the Tommo's, Oz's, Pete Lawsons of those days. You are also confusing their playfulness [or bullying depending on how they took you] with the vast majority of peoples [including them when they weren't being mad] love for the music and interest in more than getting pished at their local soul night. am not condoning all their behaviours but when they were on form musically they knew their stuff, and oh they could have fun also, Bit of an oxymoron [sic] think Matt. I hardly think Guy H or Tim Finch Dave Withers,Dave Thorley etc etc who came to prominence in the 80's fit your description. Sounds like you, like many others didnt get it then, And if that was the soul police then FFS they hardly fit Jo's description. The most annoying bit is the assumption "anoraks" or whatever is todays playground insult cant have fun, you obviously weren't paying attention were you. The rare soul scene has always been about record collecting, and knowledge, get over it, again my only assumption is this is an insult levelled by people who are intimidated by that knowledge and love of the music. The fact the the majority of todays scene more resembles the British Legion type scene of the 80's (and dont mean soul do;s at them!) rather than any soul scene i recognise may play a part. i dont often get involved in such debates on here as they very rarely reflect reality but this one has me particularly dismayed, when a top promoter and top DJ throw around such tired stereotypes, i would suggest that many DJ's at your do's Andy would include themselves in the description if its levelled at anoraks. Its due to the attitidues expressed in here i rarely attend these days. And Jo yes there are two types for me, general soul fans and Northern fans, would suggest the second most relevant to here, so would love a better explanation of whats bad and whats good/. And yes am ranting, having a crap morning in a crap place and this just reminds me why i realised in mid 90's this scene (or scenes plural as it really is) is not the place i want to be part of. Off for a pint of Buckfast. Jock O'Connor ***** No dont really believe that all of this applies to everyone in these groupls, just the majority! -
Message for Mr Moore, cant answer your PM as am at work and we have IE6, I am away from home so wont be able to answer till Thursday, will answer here as best I can. Have 3 out of 4 of the records you asked, cant remember if they are demos or issues, although might have an issue and demo of Teen Turbans. Re the Bob & Earl have you ever seen one, I have seen it on a couple of listings (SKM and ??) but have never seen it in the flesh. I have been trying to collect Loma on and off for the last 25 years and never seen a copy even on lists. Have asked on here before and it was inconclusive of its existence, even Mr Croasdell and Tony Rounce (I think) were not able to confirm it existed on Loma but I think did say they had seen it on WB, its on UK (cheap) and also French & German I am sure, so would suggest it may have been relatively successful, which makes it exclusivity a bit weird. Could it possibly been listed on Loma but never issued on this?? Or am I as usual just looking in wrong places. Mr Manship do you have any thoughts, its one of these ones thats driven me nuts progressively over the years, even when I had stopped buying 7"'s this was one I kept searching for and never saw it. On Johns and CM site it doesn't appear as not available, which surely you would have expected to be through their hands at some point. And to keep on topic, as you will see have collected Loma, have over 80** i think, almost all soul/blues except for the horrendous Belfast Gypsies and another I cant remember that I think is Kim Fowley related, also horrible but allegedly collectible in states, only bought both cause they were under a £1!! I think that is the dilemma for label collectors where there is non soul stuff, I have avoided buying any on such Loma so far and think I only need about 4 to complete the soul listings (I think, a Walter Foster anyone??) and its tempting for a full run ala Mr G Over years have always wanted to buy up Blue Rock,Arctic Wheelsville and D-Town as I see them but they have become either too expensive or I see something I want more than the I desire a label piece. In 80's did start out to collect all Chuck Jackson, Little Milton and James Carr 45's, and got a fair few (so many freebies as they were so cheap then) and what a quality return with these 3! Have loosely collected Philly International to the extent have a reasonable amount of demos and issues, but gave most of the UK ones away, DOH. Philly LP's next?? Now would like to pick up more Salsoul/Prelude WD 12"'s to booster my disco collection, however our French colleagues have put the price of these up and there are also some howlers on both labels (more on Salsoul actually on reflection)> However overriding think I have always had so many wants the avid collector in me takes second place to the chase for that new sound (nowadays more likely to be new release CD's!!) so the label completion pieces will have to wait until I am last man standing and picking them up for peanuts!!

Do we know if it is the same Larry Houston that did the 2 (?) records on Ambassador? Heard one many years ago but didnt think it was up to much. Life changing record for me, sorry Pete

Where Were You - kim tolliver - rojac 12" Mighty Mighty performance, absent parents look away now. Just one of my favorite moments on record, the full version as you can hear her pain clearer. One of those so good it hurts records, but really this time......RIP Kim

Losing The Feeling - kim tolliver - chess lp As requested, amazing vocals by an amazing singer, not sure this is my favorite track on album, which shows what a mighty album it is. For Mr Sweeney who I am eternally gratefull for tipping me on to this LP. Sad Sad loss of a great talent, one of the greatest soul singers?

Not anymore there isn't. it was gone by last night, which is a bugger as have been trying to get it for a reasonable price for a while now!! Mr Heartache - my favorite as it was one of my theme tunes, but great vocalist, more sad news!

I think this depends on when you got into it, reading your comments on here Bazza I assume you missed the late 70's to mid 90's, which is when I got into and probably Barry as well. There seems to have been a far broader church then. To define Northern now is impossible, as someone said other day if its played in a Northern venue then its probably Northern, however agree with Pete S (god these words were difficult to say) that doesn't mean you have to like it and I would rather people listened to only 60's soul rathern than no soul! To answer Barry's original question, as everyone seems to ignore that, I think there are 2 answers to that, and one is an answer about Northern (where its the beat that differentiates) and a different answer to general soul lovers, who surely cannot like only 60's, its one of these cases again where in reality many Northern fans have no real affinity to soul music (thats not a dig, its just an observation) and are only concerned with whats danceable in a big room, and this leads to the unbelievably wide spectrum that is todays Northern Scene(s)! A more interesting question would be, although I think I might have answered it above, is why is so much crap played under the banner of Northern!

What part of it was good? Agreed Ken, worse part is I bought the toilet roll substitute to see it. Sorry Steve, sure you are a nice guy but wtf were you thinking. Faux Wigan polo shirt and assume a non authentic Frank Wilson? What point exactly were you making. It sure as hell sums up big parts of the scene (or the 200 scenes I should say) today for me. Makes Miranda Sawyers comments seem more than a little irrelevant I would suggest Lets re-open the debate on whether media coverage is good and see if we get the same responses

Hello there, how are you, just seen a PM by you the other day that I didnt answer, told you I was crap with them See below for answer Exactly Mr Salter, thought you would know. The real Mr Trouble and greatest (when not on one of his many off days) translator of Black Dance Music I have witnessed, which as you know is saying something as we seen many of the big lads, his style of DJing, choice of music and just general love of proper soulful dance music was unequalled for me..... great times. I am afraid lads people like him, Tony Humphries MAW put our beloved scene dj's into perspective when talking about pure DJ'ing. And I am now no longer commenting on this thread as have found myself nodding in total agreement with the other Troubles last 2 posts. Bloody hell not sure if thats better or worse than finding myself agreeing with Dan's political comments recently, maybe I need some help!!!

Thats right and Elton the biggest tranny ever with the hairiest legs ever, what a weekend!! I did dance to Relight My Fire but not to Smells Like Teen Spirit!! How are you, are you at Cleethorpes at weekend?
