I think you will find I am discussing your comments on Jazzy B, not the other racist thread, which I have no interest in becoming involved in?
-
Saying his music is disco is an opinion, a simplistic, misguided, and ridiculously naive opinion in my opinion, but yes one I will defend your right to say anywhere. Calling him a racist because..... and you have not explained the cause, is not an opinion, its possibly slanderous/libelous, and its definitely a pig ignorant view, something I would repeat to boy and girl, and is quite unbelievable, I do not agree you have the right to express this without any evidence. I repeat, what do you know about him other than his 2 minutes of fame on a NS documentary. Just google him and you wiill immediately become less ignorant. I also repeat I do not agree with his award (I am with Simon on they should all be banned) but do not think we should be able to throw disgusting insults at him just because he doesn't like our music (music I seem to remember you were bored of for nearly 30 years). To carry on the racist analogy, generally racists are uninformed and ignorant, Jazzie B is neither other than about Northern Soul, I think you are showing you are with the above statement (ignorant not racist) , so I do not think calling you ignorant on this this is a personal insult, its a fact. Like my other current nemesis this isn't personal, I just strongly believe people should not be allowed to throw whatever crap they want to on a board and then justify it by saying its my opinion. If people put up racist nonsense on here, they would not be allowed to justify it by saying its their opinion would they, why then should you be allowed to repeat such a ridiculous accusation as Jazzie B is a racist with no evidence. All I ask is you base your opinions round facts, surely it can't be that difficult. While I feel no need to defend him I will repeat again he is a Giant within the Black Music scene of the 80's/90's and that can't be disputed, whether it is to our taste or not, as someone else said he had many other strings to his bow (Fashion, community involvement), find out just a little then pass opinion.

You have some misguided conception I am getting at you personally, I am getting at your misinformation, my thoughts on you personally have nothing to do with this, I repeat again I dislike intensely people completely changing and misquoting history, a common occurence on here. Historians generally do good research and generally base it on facts, which books exactly did you read about this period, my understanding is there are none. If you look again at original point I asked you to clarify points. I repeat look at the times you have corrected yourself on here, generally I pull any one up that I feel is completely getting that era wrong, its an era I care about, although as someone who was far more relevant to that era than I am once said to me when discussing it, let them pretend all they want on the internet, it doesn't change what we know, maybe I need to accept that. There is a huge difference between His Story and History to misquote someone much more clever than I . As always you do not even consider your ignorance you just blast off personnally, I think people have had enough of us taking away from what was a very good question. If you want to say more follow Mikes suggestion.
-
Look back on your posts and find out how many times you are corrected. I think you will see more than a few I cant stand people re-writing history or just talking rubbish about times they dont know about, particularly when its a time that is already misunderstood and misquoted by millions of morons don't comment on what you dont know about as if you do, and I will never be near your posts If I am wrong answer my question whether you were there? Goodnight.

What are you saying here, tunes like Cecil Washington and John and Wierdest were played as enders?? Have you ever heard Cecil Washington?? I think you will find the people who carried it on at that point were still relatively young and hungry, and the 80's had as many uptempo tunes as any other era, yes mid tempo rose in popularity but its a complete myth that is constantly repeated that all nighters then were full of mid tempo tune. Did you actually either read Harry's comments, the Stafford journey started in the last couple of years of Wigan as Harry is pointing out, something I totally agree with. So how was that returning to its roots, did you actually go anywhere in the 80's I am absolutley gobsmacked at peoples inaccuracies on here, Yes I am grumpy and full of the cold but the above is just a great example of re-writing history, a favoured occupation on here sometimes.

WTF are you on, he didnt introduce what, are you saying he is nobody as he didnt introduce anything to the Northern scene? You are unbelievably pig ignorant sometimes, I dont particularly like the man, and definitely dont think he deserves a gong, but I think he has done a lot more for Black music than most/many on the Northern scene, find out a little about the history of the man before you spout your mouth off. Do you know anything about his Sound System or the impact he had on the US scene for British black music, no thought not. As said before yes give your opinions but try and base some on even a remote bit of fact FFS can't you. I think his comments while misguided and more than a little ignorant do not really define this man, he is a little more than that. You are one of the most unbelievable posters on here, by a very long way.

Paul Collinson from Selby, fantastic lad and fantastic records back then, way ahead of the game. Surprised at above as he was very in with Richard and got tips from him I thought, believe he went on to be a police man!! Anyone confirm? Marc Farley, later to find "fame" as Morecombes leading light on Modern scene, another one of Richards faves, for a short while anyway! Not sure what happened to him but remember him having lots of stuff like this way ahead of others. Used to know both very well.

Gday Mr Harkins, hope you and that lovely lady of yours are good and enjoying life (apart from football obviously ) Phil is currently in Manchester for hols but is based up in the North of Scotland for next couple of years I think. He is on here as Kirsty says so maybe will let us know exactly where he is so he can buy us a beer if we are passing on our hols!! Merry Xmas and Happy New Year mate, Jock
-
And a Merry Xmas to you all too, and more importantly a very good New Year! See I am not always grumpy on here.

The Search or No More Tears I would imagine, you will probably get sound clips on Amazon.com or on CDBaby.com, pretty decent contemporary CD overall,

Is It Just Me Or Is There A Monster Northern Dancer
jocko replied to Steve Plumb's topic in Look At Your Box
As played by me at recent Lifeline and played by someone else at CIS last week, Butch next I reckon, get an extra zero (or 2) on the end of the price Mr Plumb, this could be your biggest tip yet. Its actually on here for anyone who wants a listen, dont know how to link existing clips though!! -
Is It Just Me Or Is There A Monster Northern Dancer
jocko replied to Steve Plumb's topic in Look At Your Box
Yes it is, if it had been undiscovered as old vinyl would have been just behind the Parliaments and J. J. Daniels as best new aggro soul discovery of recent years, fantastic tune. And Chalky and especially Steve G go and wash your ears out with undiluted bleach, thought you two would have been in tune enough to agree her brilliance, shocked is an understatement. And for Rachel the whole CD is fantastic, especially side 2, which are leftovers and better than most other artists inclusions of that period, IMVHO (which is the only VHO on this I should say!) I am not arguing with Tony as dont want to blow any future chances (however slim) to get a Kent credit for something at some point in the future! -
I thought there were still only a couple of these, great ex Steve Mancha c/u, too good for todays scene!!
-
I wondered when this one would be trotted out, now Barry is more than capable about sticking up for himself but unlike many others here he is probably too decent and more than a little modest. I think you need to do a little more research about the scene and people before you spout stuff like that. I think you will find that Barry would be considered one of the most forward thinking people among almost all of us on here. I think, and dont want to speak for Barry, all he was doing was respecting the past that allows him to live in the present and look to the future, accuse me of stealing from Aristotle or some such like philosopher with my phraseology! And here I would suggest is the crux of the matter, what an absolutely ridiculous statement, Barry wore his heart on his sleeve on this one, most of the rest of us just pissed ourself laughing at your arrogance. Of course we could re-translate this as you went to all nighters for a couple of years before you got bored and then had a 30 YEAR break! Hardly the form to pass judgement on everything that went on in your absence is it. Yes you are right this is a forum and is all about opinions, that doesn't allow you however to re-write history, maybe just think a little before you go spouting off rubbish next time!

Okay Pete stop teasing, think this is the COB clip again!

Jeez this is sitting in the unlikely to ever listen to again pile, time for a relisten methinks!!!

Should All Uk Weekenders Re-locate To Europe
jocko replied to Dave Thorley's topic in All About the SOUL
Can I read from the above 2 quotes that Germany is about to introduce a smoking ban, is it an all the way ban (i.e. pubs restaraunts etc)!! Blow me down didn't think it would happen in my 2nd favorite country in the world, thought smokers were still in the majority! -
I played it out everywhere in the 80's and everyone else thought it was crap!! Absolutely awesome record and pre internet used to be very hard to find, too scared to say that these days as always someone knows different!!
-
No sorry but I think I am getting your point completely, and all I am saying is why go for pale imitations when there are far better examples out there. Jill Scott/Ledisi/Valerie Adams/Trudy Lynn etc. etc.have all made much bettter and more authentic contemporary soul records in last 2 years than this, the only difference is this is mimicking a 60's soul feel e.g. the instrumentation, and therefore you say coz its like Northern it must be soul. My view is why play them imitations when there is too much of the real stuff to focus on. Apologies if a bit strong its just that like many others I get very frustrated when people hold up imitiations as the real thing. Doubt if you will like much of the above due to their contemporariness, and trust me many soul fans with far better knowledge than I dont like contemporary soul, I dont have a problem with that, all my point is if you want to hold something up as better than most do a little more homework. Otherwise these few kids will end up searching out the crap, its happened a number of times during our scenes history! I would actually say probably narrow years 1966-1973 for all the greatest Soul music but 10 minutes in my record room would soon find exceptions, I would also however say most of these great records would not be for dancing to and that is the beauty of Soul, many differing views within one genre, however what it shoudn't allow us to do, is ignore the defining characteristics of the genre, which is the voice in soul music. Have now listened to your woman, she sings relatively soulful in a Joss Stone sort of way, but, and I have said it before, so allegedly does (did!) Pavrotti (not in a Stone way obviously) and so does the music of Batehoven, they are not Soul however! Apologies if you are getting it in the neck here, as appreciate from your list and other things on here your taste is probably fairly good in the soul world but time and time again lately we, the Soul Police as it suits for differing arguments, have to apologise for trying to get people to appreciate soul at the quality end when people hold up poor examples! Why?? Not a problem with people openly arguing about pop/indie/freakbeat as it is, but why not spend a little time (general comment here not to you) looking a bit deeper if you want (and only if you want) to like Soul music in its entirity!
-
No Dave I think you asked a very interesting question and was very clearly worded, just as usual you get somebody who has obviously not read it spouting a lot of uninformed nonsense that is more about them getting their voice heard. Geoff alluded to some bit of an answer, not sure how many more were around in the 60's, one thing I wondered was the availability of the actual music not quite difficult, therefore for the non major venues would they possibly play more pop due to not having main name DJ's, or Geoff are you saying its always been there in all the main clubs? Like Dave not making any judgements but it is one of the genuinely most interesting questions on here for a while,.
-
No they dont have to be but you will find that a large majority are, check your history books and think you will see thats generally now documented as fact. You will find all the greatest are and about 98.9% of the greatest soul records are made by not only Black artists, but generally by US Black artists. And before I get a playlist from the latest Northern night, this thread is very much about soul artists, not Northern Soul, and therefore the responses Rich, Sweeney etc give are not only understandable but needed. The usual lazy ar*e soul police response is not only tiresome but incredibly uninformed. And in case you dont get their point it is if you are holding them up as a great soul singer you should be comparing them to Rozetta Johnson/Millie Jackson not Amy Whinehouse. And before I get the same abuse as before, I am not saying this latest greatest press tip is bad, havent bothered to listen to her as yet, just if you are a genuine soul fan (I repeat not defining Northern but the universally accepted genre that is soul music, that shock horror is alive, if maybe not in quite the same abundance today) you may be should be looking elsewhere for the next best sensation. The closest analogy I can get to what you are saying is comparing a new tram to a classic train, sure there are similarites and probably from the same broad thinking design idea but they are not the same!

Aww wondered about that, didnt realise there were two. Yes Godz can I have a soundclip please. Cheers Jock

Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
jocko replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Sorry Iain but read Gareths response 100 times before going to bed, massive respect for what you have done and for what you do in the wider music world, but sorry this to me says you are looking for the easy way back in. -
Playing Rare Originals @ Venues: Does It Make Sense?
jocko replied to Ian Dewhirst's topic in All About the SOUL
Bloody hell Gareth, that is one of the best things I have read on here, sure said that to you about 3 years ago, but this is the one. Sadly lots of people wont get this, lots more will say I am a snob for saying that, I have now come to the stage where I am happy being a snob when it comes to this, bring on the revolution! Beer on me next time I see you young man, hopefully soon!! -
