I think the answer is in the above Chalky mate, it looks like another attempt to airbrush the 80's due to no doubt "having a break" or watching paint dry or some other equally important past time that meant the beloved Northern scene wasn't so beloved. I wish that I could just ignore these sort of misinformations but it still riles me, thankfully just paying a flying visit so off to bed with my medication, and hopefully will wake up in the morning and find this was just another of these recurring bad dreams. Sorry Chalky but you are on your own to correct this one mate, I give in!! See you soon.

It was released as 4 separate (expensive) US LP's in US, then followed, a bit later I think by, by double LP in UK at cheap budget price, the avid soul man from Glasgow Peter McKernan, who hated spending more than required, moaned about this for a great many years after buying the 4 LP's. So the tight wads like me bought the double LP! Whatever it's a fantastic Lp and on hindsight one of the introductions to the deeper side, it was quite a brave concept to release that in UK when you think about it.

Some great sides in there Mr Jack, with the above 3 being pick of the bunch, for those experimenting in the Soulful House side of things, Ten City & Asaph Womack are as good as it gets, both being up there with the best ever in that genre. Ceybil Jeffries is just a great slab of soul as Mr Jack says, outside of the early Southport days has that had many plays? Get sound clips out Derek and they will fly out, very very cheap for these future rarities!

Only answer is change your venues immediately. Go to the right venue (Lifeline,DDA at Lowton,100 Club,Wilton, Creative Soul, etc), can guarantee if you hear repeats there its because they are so good and fresh they demand a repeat, screaming loudly play me again. Stop the proliferation of nothing different (no matter what they say otherwise) venues and support the above, then you have one scene moving forward, just like the old days, sort of. It's also on the fantastic MPG album, which has a number of outstanding tracks. Am just back on line and music seems to be working okay so will try and put a couple of clips up from the album.

Some decent bargains in there Paul. Sound clips of James Shorter (both sides I think) which is an amazing record and The Romoes, which is one of the greatest NS instrumentals IMO, on RefoSOul. Romeos is a bargain.

Ady I have an issue of the Roach one, do you need sound clips or scans of both sides of this? Think the other side is okay as well.

Would it not make sense for Mike to come on and let people know what is happening, I need to subscribe but due to recent uncertainly and previous lack of response from magazine haven't done so since last year. Since I haven't been in the right places over last few months have only bought one out of the last few, gave up phoning for back issues, therefore its hurting the business where it matters most Sure people would agree, for all its journalistic faults, its the best for its wide coverage of soul music, and too good a resource to lose, although appreciate its a tough world out there. Sure everyone would be 100% behind mag if uncertainty was removed. As an aside has anyone got back issues for sale, don't have the 2 Levine ones and only got one after it, can they PM me if so. Even more aside has anyone got details for the site to subscribe to Soul Up North as think mines may have run out and can't find my last issue. Many thanks Jock

Would agree there Sebastian, but most people would also have to buy new premises to house adding to the cost! :lol: What a spot Sebastian, you now have 100's of people rushing for magnifying glasses to see what else is there, could be a Jean Carter issue next to it!

Or more likely pictures of people who came to visit the collection and are now buried somewhere beneath it. Sure there a few on here who could get a co-operative together to outbid SoulStrut, probably lots of potential Dolly Parton c/u's hidden away in collection.

And I am sure Tony and Ady are just being modest by not mentioning the fantastic Kent CD on Danny White called Natural Soul Brother, a quite outstanding collection of this guys work, which contains both sides, and as I seem to remember sleeve notes saying, presenting fantastic singer that seems under the radar much of the time. Cmon guys,even for vinyl only guys buy this for the sleevenotes, remember it keeps Ady and Tony off the streets and doing their agressive begging double act, and also, slightly more importantly, puts money back into deserving pockets (artists familys that is not Ady or Tony!)

Or maybe just Black American culture has moved on and they are making music more relevant to them now-adays, It may surprise you but the people making "our" music probably have never given a massive thought to making music to suit the dance floors of Northern England,and WTF should they. The discerning ear is even more baffling, is this than the artists that made the music in the past or the ones who don't give a damn about it now as they are making modern soul music!! I would suggest it is only "our" music because it encompasses everything from C&W to R&R, oh and sometimes soul ** I agree with the leave 60's lovers to love 60's only, per President Pete, but in the same way why make ridiculous comparisons to contemporary artists. Sorry Dave, you are a fine bloke but that is one of the daftest questions on here yet, go and find yourself some recent Southern soul (there is millions of crap) which is probably closer to what you would consider soul or even some contemporary soul (such as Amp Fiddler) before having such a narrow base of comparison. ** Yes I know that is sarcastic but to a general soul lover it sometimes seems on here, other than the media threads, the majority of people don't even like soul *** Dave happy to do you some CD's but they won't sound like 60's as surely you will see when you think about it WTF should they, its 2007, America has changed a little since 1965!!

Okay before I get into to this debate, which I had promised myself I wouldn't, can I ask who the "We" you so proudly you refer to actually are. It will help me if I know whether you are a full on David Irving revisionist, an uneducated (AKA ignorant but don't want to cause another uproar) debater trying to wind up, someone who thinks they really do live in the Matrix, or yet another full on delusional pseudo comic, the delusion being that any of the above is even remotely funny. And what actual point are you making by linking Frankie Knuckles to the invention of the computer. At least try and link your argument to some semblance of reality, even if it is on a slightly different level from most other people's reality. Neo I am sure is listening. Not really sure it's actually worth getting into stuff like this but whether you like it or not House was an Afro-American music that admittedly had far wider influences (as Barry has said Chicago stuff having extensive European influences) than the other pure soul based genre's that had arrived post 1969 - funk,, disco etc, but non the less it was an evolution of Black American music, indeed the bastard son of disco (that is real disco, not modern Northern soul, not John Travolta or one the many misuses of the word daily on here) some would say, therefore the slightly demented cousin of 60's soul. Like both Disco and Funk towards the end of their period much of House has been bastardised so far it is barely recognisable from its origins, and in reality it is almost impossible to define house today as there are so many vastly different strands, 95% of which is not good to my ears, however like Soul generally there is still some good, possibly great House music being made, to me that is generally vocal house, although quite partial to a down and dirty jazz based house instrumental, or even the broken beat break-off (more the adopted child that turns out to be a long lost neice!), probably not to the taste of many, but such is the diversified suite that is house. As usual on here people are judging it based on whether it is Northern Soul compatible, as the wise Bear says above, not really a relevant comparison. Calling much of the music I am guessing you are referring to as soulful house is much like calling Bee Gees disco or Kool And The Gang later music Funk, however many do, or even worse calling Barbara Mills, Sue Lynn etc etc Soul records. I suggest you go away and do a bit more swotting, get Trinity to download some more memories. Unfortunately you always get numbnuts dumbing down what was previously pure, that however is no reason to change its history or not to give credit where due, unless you are David Irving. I don't blame people for not liking it, particularly 60's only people, however WTF do they need to comment on it as if they knew it intimately like a(insert your own familial analogy here) , particularly when it's obvious they have only heard the few examples that Sam is playing, some good some the equivalent of the Footsie for the House generation, but all way out of date. I appreciate there are some above who have heard lots and don't like it, I probably don't understand that but I welcome their considered and informed opinion, even though I know it's wrong! Finally to call House only computer music is to call Stephen Hawkins only disabled, equally ignorant and ill informed.

Minority of 2 at least then Gareth, I said that when I posted it on here his version shaded it, am big fan of Clarence Reid's recorded output. I have talked to quite a few people on this version and generally discussion has been around it being an LP track so thats a nice surprise, having never really looked for it however on 45 will start now and watch it never turn up!! Minority of 3 then, and with you and Gareth in agreement think we can safely say Mr Hampsey is obviously wrong this time, don't think we get the opportunity to say that much!! If I find more than one 45 Andy you can have spare, however think may be a challenge to find one. Soul Bowl may be a reasonable shout if he is still carrying stock as thats where lots of my Miami area 45's came from.

No thats a fair comment Mark, since I just stumble side to side on dance floor, I can dance to those tricky records Re the good and great comment I think its one of those that since its been so rarely played its difficult to judge that, but again not an unfair comment Glad to see its having its day though!

Cmon boys, you can't be serious saying this is no good, a bit off the wall but a great record, mean and moody dance record. One of the ones that started me on the route of looking for something different back in the day. Great out loud over a system. This and the thing on Phil LA (Over and Over) were to me the two greatest things underplayed at beginning of 80's, hope Bobby Adams is still to have it's day although the rarity may be against that.

And the B-side, You Hurt Me For The Last Time, is awesome slab of crossoverish soul. Think there is a soundclip of that side on Crossover thread, its on definitely on the Refosoul search. Its a fantastic double sider this.
