  1. I thought there was the original blue (which this scan is off, my green one is dark green and very different to scan) with and without piano intro also Steve, sure this has been documented in one of the fanzines but can't remember which one. Jock
  2. Smoke also has a brilliant ballad on flip, not as good as the LP version but about £100 cheaper, will put up on Deep thread later this am. Some serious quality 45's up there for £20 mate, great list.
  3. I doubt very much you would find one artist happy with this practise, "just to be heard". I think you will find them far happier at things like this being reissued on CD and being paid for it, which stuff like this I think impacts. Its a bootleg for a fake collector, what more can you say!
  4. If anyone fancies bringing current issue (and any back issues to August) would be happy to buy at Wilton tonight, even happy to pay future subs by cash tonight if anyone from mag there.
  5. Hi Sebastian, any chance of a sound clip of the Soul Notes flip side.
  6. I also have O.V. Wright on Blackbeat, great tune just don't have time to post as just passing through. My Save Your Love is just one sided demo with blank b-side as Wheelsville seem to have done a few times.
  7. I was thinking of something witty to say re original quote, but you done it very well!! I think NS is a very good example of the English language phenomenon where a name means many different things to different people, and yes horse poo is definitely what some people include in their definition! Think we should start a Rare?northern/6ts/7ts or just a Soul trading standards committee, can you imagine the fun when trying to agree guidelines and standards!
  8. I will take great pleasure in correcting you, and blowing my own trumpet, by saying it was me not Mr Harley that was responsible for blasting this out the tinny speakers that made Shotts unique!! I think Roger Banks used to bring a wheelbarrow load of them along as loads of people asked about it afterwards, never did get my commission Roger. Fantastic record that makes me almost well up with the memories, again what more can you ask!
  9. 1000 thanks Nev, that looks great, just need to understand now how to do some clipping of the picture!! Cheers Jock
  10. There is an LP too is there not? How rare is that?
  11. So to come round to my original point you are more interested in being a DJ than the music you are playing?
  12. Can anyone do a good quality full scan of the LP Esther Phillips sings, I have the LP thanks to that nice Mr Mannion but my scanner is too small to get whole cover in, I need the whole cover and then just the picture with her name above it. But if someone can get me the whole picture sure I can do the rest!! It is to be used on a website so needs to be fairly good quality. Many thanks in advance.

I wouldn't have thought it's too smart a move putting up a direct MP3 of a currently available CD mate, a bit risky in my opinion.
  14. Bingo, that's exactly the point - most of us got into the soul scene to get away from that Sh*t. Sadly nowadays there appears to be little difference between the commercial scenario above and the majority of soul nights out there! You pays your money and takes your choice has never been truer!! Okay my BP is rising too fast, off for a lie down in a darkened room and some more Gin.
  15. I was just going to say that, now the majority after reading (or not should I say) will start the chinese whispers that will end up Joan only plays records she hates  Sadly reading this Joan there are loads, all no doubt fuelled by the egotistical drive to be the best DJ in their 30 mile local soul night radius. Would you not agree Joan that DJ'ing was something you were asked to do, after a significant period of being around records and the scene, rather than the mad rush everyone and their dog has to play records these days. It makes me laugh on here week after week to see people on here advertising their "yet another" new night playing something different which to me translates as to give themself a DJ spot and then they wonder why they get half a dozen people. Its not a scene I recognise, thankfully............ Its madness I say madness!
  16. Surely it depends on the venue, every record has to be introduced to the punters at some point and taking the risk of clearing the floor first time is surely an acceptable risk to get a record out there, a good DJ will get it back and maybe quieten the floor later with another risk (I suspect the sort of venues DJ's playing such new stuff will have enough people willing to dance to never quite empty the floor), that to me is a great DJ rather than a mediocre one, of which there seem to be 5,999,998 out there (mediocre not great!) Also some venues don't have such an issue with the odd floor clearer, would suggest there are enough of these much feared and loathed chinstrokers out there that will dance next time, or maybe the next time!!
  17. Yes exactly, and that to me is exactly what every soul DJ should do. A discerning punter should know what a DJ is likely to play in style if not the records and therefore the best DJ's will be playing what the punters want, which for me is to be surprised by something never heard or rarely heard. And that appears to be the main issue nowadays, suspect the punters you are meaning want to hear only what they know and know very well, Why bother with a DJ then, top 500 jukeboxes I believe are soon to be made available by GoldSoul. Only if you are more interested in being a DJ than the music you are playing, on reading this that seems to be the majority view, sad to say. Makes my gin sodden armchair seem welcoming and warm, again!!
  18. Liam just sent you the Johnny Gilliam, full of crackles I am afraid but my copy isn't in best nick. I can do you the Embers and Jerry Butler later if you don't get them, just nipping out now.

    Another Want

Was responding to the Marty Thompson part of the thread and asking for soundclip of that. To clear up my comments re Ion playing and Stafford etc was about Marty Thompson Whirlpool. I have a strange affection for the Enchantments, one of the biggest records for a period of the 80's in Scotland, had them dancing on the tables and sweat dripping from the walls, I jest not!

    Another Want

I think you will find it had mixed response actually Simon, pretty sure it was the normally faultless Ion that was best known for playing this so not sure how many spins at Stafford it actually had, it was definitely played there though. Some, including myself, thought it was a truly awful record with some of the worst vocals ever, not everyone agreed however, as always in those days, so in some ways the times were similar. I agree however at that time people were more likely to try something off the wall, which this most definitely was! Anyone got a soundclip to see if my view has changed?
  21. Its been issued twice in States hasn't it, only the re-issue was on Motown or Tamla label, I thought the original was on something Resources?? Can anyone confirm, I have the 2nd issue but can't find the little blighter.
  22. Yes previously unissued, also from a CD of Tony's unissued stuff from 73-83 called Tony Drake's Collection - Collectors Choice Vol. 1, some other not bad tracks on it. If I remember rightly Tony has his own web site which may have more details. He actually wrote the song under his own name Samuel Garner, and on listening to it think it could be the songwriters demo, anyone know more? Funny enough had just recorded this to put on Crossover thread, so just off there!!
  23. Neil is it vinyl only or do you have CD's also? Cheers
  24. Google them and you will get lots of info, probably not always of interest to NS but a great disco (real disco!) band, with involvement by the legend that is Leroy Burgess and also Patrick Adams, probably actually a few tracks playable in 70's set on thinking about it. Just rushing out but if no more when I get back will dig out the albums I have.
  25. Great tune Mark, and played by Dave Evison towards the end of your favorite venue quite a bit. Seem to remember seeing it on different colour labels and maybe different design, anyone confirm.
